Sometimes, music just grabs you. There is no explanation for the hold it takes on your heart and spirit. This is how it was for me when I first heard the music of Brittany. Simple and complete capture. Living in the Pacific Northwest, a place more famous musically for Folk Punk (think banjos and tatoos) and Grunge Guitar, exploring Breton traditional music required creativity and tenacity. Before a wealth of obscure musical subcultures were readily accessible on YouTube and iTunes, I was given what felt like an archaeological mission to delve into used vinyl record stores and small-venue concerts. I unearthed albums by Malicorne, Alan Stivell, and the trio Bourdin-Marchand-Dautel. I received cassette tapes, copies of copies from people who had recorded the Breton Fest Noz years ago on a visit. An over-photocopied tune collection hand-written by Patrick Sicard somehow made it into my hands. I was even lucky enough to be introduced to Christian LeMaitre by Kevin Burke after a Celtic Fiddle Festival concert here, in Portland. Piece by piece, I built my repertoire. Now, to convince other musicians to join me. Actually, it didn't take long. I met Elizabeth Christina after I joined the Bridgetown Morris Men. She and I played music for the lads' seasonal capers and soon discovered that we had a similar affinity for the rhythmic, mysterious music that could be found in the hidden vales and hills of Western Europe. Elizabeth comes from an impressive musical background and her solid stage presence and thorough understanding of music made performing an instant delight. We soon added the talented Bryan Owens playing the guitar and octave mandolin. Bryan has lived a minstrel's life, traveling around Europe and New Zealand, honing is impressive skills with musicians of all kinds. His ear for rhythm and keen sense of ensemblizing music is unsurpassed. Together, we formed Mistral, taking our name for the Northwest wind that blows through central France. We've assembled a collection of music on our first album, Promontory, which represents what we love best about traditional music. There are exciting and rhythmic Breton dance tunes (An Dro de Brandivy, Surefoot set), yearning maritime songs in French (Nous Sommes Marins, Au Caboulot les Gars), old English ballads full of soul (Barleycorn), and original tunes straight from my own heart and pen (Grey Birds of Winter, Le Crecerelle). The entire project was recorded, mixed, and mastered by the Grammy-winning producer and amazing fiddler, Billy Oskay. Promontory is the result of our long journey to discover and master the great music of Brittany and other points of Atlantic Europe. We are proud and delighted to share it with you. -Ian Clemons Mistral: Ian Clemons: Diatonic Accordion (Bernard Loffet D/G), Fiddle, Hurdy-Gurdy, Voice. Elizabeth Christina: Accordion, Wooden Flute, Recorders, Renaissance Drum, Douçaine, Voice. Bryan Owens: Guitar and Octave Mandolin.

With his laid-back traditional sound, straightforward vocals, and heartfelt ballads, Jerry Don Martin came to be known as a true storyteller through song, painting a picture that the listener can truly see, not just hear. Born in Hartselle, Alabama, Jerry began playing guitar when he was child, learning the instrument from his friend and fellow successful songwriter Al Turney. During high school, he and friend Norman Juliano recruited other musicians, forming The Realistics in 1964. The following year, the band signed a contract with Peagam records, releasing their first single with regional success and acclaim. For the next two years, they had a series of minor hits, highlighted by 'Paula' in 1966. The group dissolved in 1968 as Jerry entered the United States Navy. After his military duty, Jerry decided to pursue a solo career and was quickly signed by the independent label Treetop Records in 1975. His first release, 'Going Home', received heavy airplay and he was soon signed by Fraternity Records. His first Fraternity release, Little Ragged Clown cracked Cashbox's Top 5. Jerry would release eight singles over the next several years, with 'Easy Loving You' and 'Widows Eyes' again gaining national attention. Throughout the 80's Jerry concentrated on his duties as a staff writer for Hurdy Gurdy Publishing and eventually his own label, Pinewood Records based out of Louisville, Kentucky. The label saw regional success with several of Jerry's releases and R&B act 'Us Posse'. In 1998 Jerry signed with DiMar Records, releasing his first full-length album 'Devil From Dallas' in 2000. 2008 saw the release of 'Lonely Guitar Man', an album of digitally remastered demos, lost recordings, and test pressings throughout his career. In 2009 Jerry has returned to the studio under the LRC Recordings label for work on his next album 'This Time Around', due out December 2009.

Ian's desire here was the creation of contemporary yet tuneful chamber music, with most of the tracks written with Kyle Horch (saxophones) Guillem Calvo (violin) and Pavel Timofjevsy (piano) in mind. Woven into the violin sonata are themes, harmony and phrasing with a provenance in Celtic and psychedelic music. It's composed in a traditional 19th Century style with much use of rubato and flexible tempos. The delays often found in electronic music can be heard in Astral Hurdy-Gurdy. In Limes Groves the piano imitates the Autoharp (prominent in Bluegrass music), with each instrument providing a pulsing part somewhere in the textures. The title track Islas (Spanish for Islands - with Ian enjoying Spain and Malta when he can escape London) is influenced by ambient/new age music. The piano creates a dreamy texture over which the soprano sax plays long melodic lines. As well as composing music ranging from classical and jazz to electronica and new wave - Ian plays keyboards, trombone and bass guitar - alongside new instruments like turntables and laptops. His classical saxophone compositions have been played by Saxploitation and John Harle with the Brodsky Quartet. Ian has always had a passion for unconventional instrumentations - his first album San Gejtanu on the Music Chamber label featured Kyle Horch alongside an octet of violins and violas.

Many of the songs you are about to hear are more than a thousand years old. For centuries, these songs have been carried on from generation to generation, preserved only by the oral tradition. Then, in the early 1990's, a Russian singer and ethnomusicologist Juliana Svetlitchnaia made it her life's mission to eternalize the sounds of her culture's past. Juliana traveled to some of the farthest outposts of Russian civilization, places accessible only by helicopter and lacking basic amenities. Yet it was places like these that gave Juliana the most authentic sampling of the fading tradition she had sought to preserve. She worked day and night, interviewing singers, listening to their songs, singing along with them-and recording it all on a simple tape recorder. Upon her return, Juliana combed through hundreds of hours of the recorded material, transcribing the lyrics and notating the songs. Driven by her passion to share these gems with the world, Juliana founded PAVA: the ensemble of Russian female folk singers. 'Pava' is the Russian word for peacock, a symbol of the beauty, strength, and grace of a Russian woman. In the years that followed PAVA's inception, Juliana has painstakingly selected every singer who has performed in the group. She believes that a PAVA singer must have two indispensible traits: a zeal for the Russian folk singing, and a voice that radiates that unmistakable effervescence of the quintessential Russian female folk singer. This album owes it's existence to Juliana's endless energy as much as to the unique singing ability and boundless enthusiasm of each PAVA member. Although PAVA is an a cappella group, some of the songs in this album are accompanied by musical instruments. These include the traditional Russian balalaika, kalyuka (overtone flute), kugikly (panpipes), and kolyosnaya lira (hurdy-gurdy), the small percussion instruments such as treshchotki (clapper), bubenchiki (jingle bells), and a washboard, and a few less commonly known instruments, such as a scythe. Although a departure from the pure a cappella singing, the use of accompaniment in this album is not surprising: hand-held musical and percussion instruments have often been used in Russian folk music to enhance the liveliness of the songs and to draw out their rhythmic patterns. In concerts, PAVA singers wear authentic Russian folk costumes, some more than 300 years old! The singers admit that this intricate attire has an almost mystical effect on them, as if moving them back into the world that bore the sounds they now hope to reproduce. The costumes are sometimes donned for rehearsals, too, and some singers insisted on wearing their costumes in the recording studio. Whether or not they did, the results speak for themselves: the superbly rendered, first-of-it's-kind collection of melodies, harmonies and lyrics that intrigue and lure us into the amazingly vibrant Russian folk singing culture! Alex Mandel.
