Best-selling author Ruth Reichl examines her mother's life, giving voice to the universal unarticulated truth that we are grateful not to be our mothers. In Not Becoming My Mother, best-selling author Ruth Reichl embarks on a clear-eyed, openhearted investigation of her mother's life, piecing together the journey of a woman she comes to realize she never really knew. Looking to her mother's letters and diaries, Reichl confronts the painful transition her mother made from a hopeful young woman to an increasingly unhappy older one and realizes the tremendous sacrifices she made to make sure her daughter's life would not be as disappointing as her own. Growing up in Cleveland, Miriam Brudno dreamed of becoming a doctor, like her father. But when she announced this, her parents said, "You're no beauty, and it's too bad you're such an intellectual. But if you become a doctor, no man will ever marry you." Instead, at 20, Miriam opened a bookstore, a profession everyone agreed was suitably ladylike. On what would have been Miriam's 100th birthday Reichl opens up her mother's diaries for the first time and encounters a whole new woman. This is a person she had never known. In this intimate study Reichl comes to understand the lessons of rebellion, independence, and self-acceptance that her mother - though unable to guide herself - succeeded in teaching her daughter. ungekürzt. Sons and Lovers was the first of Lawrence's major works, and is still considered to be one of his best. The 1913 novel was partly autobiographical and was set in the coalmining village of Bestwood. The parents of the central character, Paul, are Mr. and Mrs. Morel who are a vigorous and heavy-drinking miner and a well-educated, pretty intellectual respectively. We learn of Paul's successful brother and sister, William and Annie, but are soon drawn into Paul's world. Still in his teens, Paul works in a factory producing surgical appliances but becomes sick and spends his time with Miriam Leivers whom he falls in love with. Their love is made difficult by Miriam's intense and religious nature and the fondness Paul's mother has for him that is protective to the point of dependence. As Paul reaches his early twenties he becomes passionate and makes love to Miriam but this ecstasy spells the end for their relationship. The latter stages of the novel concern Paul's next passion - Mrs. Clara Dawes - and her vengeful husband. In the end, with Mrs. Morel's slow death, we find that the closest and most meaningful bond is held between mother and son. The novel is notable for being the first English novel to be genuinely working-class in origin and focus. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jim Killavey. Beguiled is a coming-of-age story of a first-generation immigrant girl who had dreams that were interrupted by cultural mores, by discrimination, and by her own shortcomings. Miriam Levine, daughter of Russian-Jewish parents, born in 1900, grew up in the storied old West End neighborhood of Boston, a multiethnic, densely populated community of diverse people who remarkably mingled and helped one another. Miriam's culture maven Pop, a member of the socialist-unionist Workmen's Circle, took her to the theater from the time she was a little girl. She dreamed of going on stage to escape the confines of her tenement neighborhood and her grieving, critical mother, until an almost fatal misstep forced her to postpone her "real life". A serendipitous offer compelled her to confront her inner demons and society's expectations. In New York City and the arts mecca of Provincetown, MA, she is mentored by famous literati of the Roaring '20s.The historical context of the decades before the Great Depression, the place of immigrants, racism, and women's suffrage, parallels tough political dilemmas the US faces today. Will Miriam have the gumption to follow her dreams? Will those dreams yield her the happiness she seeks? Or will she find that her childhood fantasies "beguile" her to seek "fool's gold"? Authored in a fast-paced style, described as a pause-resister, the narrator makes the characters, fictional and real, come alive.  ungekürzt. The monsters, myths, and historical aspects which Miriam uncovers are the hallmarks of any great seafaring adventure, adding lots of atmosphere as the darkness and tension of the tale builds up. The fishermen of Cape Madre tell tales for the right price, and Miriam quickly learns of a string of disappearances all related to this mysterious monster. The cops and the coast guard are meant to handle the crimes of men, but Miriam's been trained to find the creatures of lore - creatures like this. Dorothea Benton Frank is one of America's most insightful writers, weaving highly addictive tales of the conundrums of life with hilarity and heat. Now, in The Land of Mango Sunsets, Frank gives us one woman's journey toward a hard-won truth: Life isn't always what it appears to be, and the sooner you realize that pride won't keep you warm at night, the happier you will be. Oh, and one other thing - a truly joyous life comes with a generous heart. Meet Miriam Elizabeth Swanson, in a full-blown snit, buoyed by a fabulous cast who run the gamut from insufferable to wonderful. First is the arrival of Liz Harper, Miriam's tenant from Birmingham, who sets a new cycle in motion. Then her other tenant, Kevin, a stalwart companion with more style than Cary Grant, shakes Miriam out of her fog to see which battles are worth the fight. Next, her estranged son announces he's marrying a Jamaican woman. And what about her ex-husband, Charles, and that sordid lingerie model of his? Well, Harry, her African gray parrot, has plenty of opinions. Finally, you'll laugh and cry when she meets a man named Harrison who changes her into a gal named Mellie. Miriam spins out from the revolving door of her postured life as a Manhattan quasi-socialite while she thirsts - no, starves for recognition. How did she become what she hates the most, and what does she endure to realize it? And where are the answers? It takes a few spins and dips and one spectacular fall for Miriam to get her head on straight. Then, in a whoosh, she's off to the enchanted and mysterious land of Sullivans Island, deep in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Told straight from the heart in Frank's vivid, highly entertaining style, The Land of Mango Sunsets just might be her finest work to date. If you decide to listen to this book, don't make plans to do anything else for a while. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nicole Poole.
