If you grew up in the late 60s and 70s, you need to read this book.  It follows the life of a baby boomer who was raised by hard-working World War II era parents who are still not convinced he has learned to wipe himself. He has gone to college, dated, gotten jobs, gotten married, become a father, lost jobs, gotten divorced, learned how to use a computer, and tried to fulfill his civic responsibilities.  Like many others in his generation, he followed the time-honored steps which were supposed to guarantee a successful career, a happy marriage, and a comfortable retirement. Instead, he is struggling to keep the wolf from the door. He is checking out online dating sites, and praying Walmart will have an opening for a geriatric greeter when his arthritic fingers can no longer pound a keyboard. Looking back over his life, he is unsure where it all went wrong, or even if it did.  His wife and kids turned him into the Ogre in the Basement, but even there he has his doubts. Was he mean like Shrek, or was he more like the whiney snot-nosed kid everybody liked to laugh at in the third grade when he threw a crying fit. Is it any wonder Katharine Hepburn said, “Life is hard? After all, it kills you.” If you are not careful, life will kill you. Or, turn you into the Ogre in the Basement.  Read the Ogre in the Basement. Laugh, cry, and get a new perspective on life, the Universe, and everything else. ungekürzt. Language: English. How ya doin? With these four syllables, delivered in an unmistakably authentic New York accent, Steve Osborne has riveted thousands of people through the legendary storytelling outfit The Moth (and more than a million times on their website) with his hilarious, profane, and touching tales from his 20 years serving as an NYPD street cop. Steve Osborne is the real deal, people, the tough, streetwise New York cop of your dreams, one with a big, big heart. Kojak? NYPD Blue? Law & Order? Fuggedaboutem! The Job blows them out of the water with this unpauseable book. Steve Osborne has seen a thing or two in his 20 years in the NYPD - some harmless things, some definitely not. In "Stakeout" Steve and his partner mistake a Manhattan dentist for an armed robbery suspect and reduce the man down to a puddle of snot and tears when questioning him. In "Mug Shot" the mother of a suspected criminal makes a strange request and provides a sobering reminder of the humanity at stake in his profession. And in "Home" the image of his family provides the adrenaline he needs to fight for his life when assaulted by two armed and violent crackheads. From his days as a rookie cop to the time spent patrolling in the Anti-Crime Unit - and his visceral, harrowing recollections of working during 9/11 - Steve Osborne's stories capture both the absurdity of police work and the bravery of those who do it. His stories will speak to those nostalgic for the New York City of the 1980s and '90s, a bygone era of when the city was a crazier, more dangerous (and possibly more interesting) place. Includes two live stories from The Moth - "Hot Dogs" and "Dentist". Stories from The Moth courtesy of The Moth. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Steve Osborne. Viking Navy Seals? What an odd combination! Well, Holy Thor! Not really: - The ancient Vikings and modern SEALs are both noted for their fighting skills.- They love boats and the water can anyone say longships and the Navy?).- Both are known to be buff of body and uncommonly attractive (Women from foreign countries were known to invite the Vikings to their bed furs because they were so tempting. Or was it because they bathed more often than the average man?).- They share a rare sense of humor, the ability to laugh at themselves, as evidenced by the old sagas.- Loyalty to family and country abounds. Sandra Hill, with her trademark humor and sizzle, combines both cultures via contemporary time travels where centuries-separated lovers are brought together in outrageous miracles of destiny. Rough and ReadyShe's rough...he's ready...together, they're a match.... In Rough and Ready, a group of Navy SEALs under the leadership of Lt. Torolf Magnusson accidentally find themselves back in the eleventh century Norselands in a woman's sanctuary where they fight off a vicious "terrorist" named Steinolf, as well as the women themselves, who want babies without the men (think Dark Age one-night stands, which amuse and offend the horny but honorable men). Torolf manages to return to the future, but, again, accidentally, he brings a reluctant Hilda Brundottir back with him and has no choice but to place her in his home in a biker trailer park named Hog Heaven. Down and DirtyWhen a hot Navy SEAL...meets a reluctant Viking warrior-ess...sparks fly! Down and Dirty has Navy SEAL Frank "Pretty Boy" Floyd facing a two-edged sword, a five-year-old, half-Arab son he never knew existed, the affectionately called Sammy the Snot, and Britta the Big, an ancient Viking warrioress that Floyd had met in that weird trip back to the past in Rough and Ready. Viking UnchainedWhen destiny demands two time-crossed lovers must meet... Tears and laughter abound in Viking Unchained where the grief-stricken Viking Thorfinn Ericsson goes searching for his missing son Miklof and finds him a thousand years in the future with little Mike Denton, the son of Navy SEAL widow Lydia Denton, an aerobics instructor.
