Promise of the Black Monks , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1046min
In Promise of the Black Monks - Robert E. Hirsch's hot-selling dynamic new historical fiction - religious war erupts between Church and King. A young man, who is predestined to be the catalyst of war, is torn between his heart and the church: one he knows to be his true love and the other a farce. Born of nobility in France in the year 1066, the fate of seven-year-old Tristan de Saint-Germain is thrown to the winds upon the execution of his father for treason against William the Conqueror of Normandy. Then, abandoned by his mother who remarries and departs for England, Tristan and his four-year-old brother find themselves thrown into the monastic world of the Benedictine Black Monks of Cluny, France. Under the tutelage of Grand Prior Odo de Lagery , who one day will ascend to the very pinnacle of power within the Catholic Church in Rome, Tristan develops into an academic and linguistic prodigy by the age of 12 and becomes known as the Promise of the Black Monks. Tristan's unusual talents become useful to the Benedictines as well as to Rome, and the boy soon finds himself pulled into the visceral power struggle between Pope Gregory VII and Emperor Henrich IV as they mercilessly wage spiritual, political and military war upon each other to claim supremacy over the continent of Europe. ungekürzt. Good Morning, Midnight , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 519min
Augustine, a brilliant ageing scientist, is fascinated by the stars. For years he has scanned the universe, trying to quantify infinity, to find that first moment in history. When news of a catastrophic event arrives at the remote research centre in the Arctic Circle where he works, he elects to stay behind. But shortly after the last airlift departs, Augustine discovers a child - Iris. She rarely speaks but hums an eerie tune. In spite of the observatory's state-of-the-art equipment, Augustine is unable to establish contact with the outside world; all communication has gone dark. Time means very little in deep space. Mission Specialist Sullivan, a divorced astronaut and mother, is aboard the Aether on its return flight from Jupiter. They are the first human beings to delve this deep into space, and it has changed the crew. At last Sully feels at peace with the sacrifices she has made, a tiny and intrinsic piece of a universe beyond her comprehension. But suddenly, inexplicably, the Aether loses all contact with Mission Control. In a vacuum of information, the crew must determine the best course of action. Faced with the cold, barren sweep of the Arctic and the vast silence of space, what will they do next, and how will they survive? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Hilary Huber, John H. Mayer. Les Misérables, Hörbuch, Digital, 1993min
Les Miserables is set in the Parisian underworld. The protagonist, Jean Valjean, is sentenced to prison for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread. After his release, Valjean plans to rob monseigneur Myriel, a saint-like bishop, but cancels his plan. However, he forfeits his parole by committing a minor crime, and for this crime Valjean is haunted by the police inspector Javert. Valjean eventually reforms and becomes, under the name of M. Madeleine, a successful businessman, benefactor, and mayor of a northern town. To save an innocent man, Valjean gives himself up and is imprisoned in Toulon. He escapes and adopts Cosette, an illegitimate child of a poor woman, Fantine. Cosette grows up and falls in love with Marius, who is wounded during a revolutionary fight. Valjean rescues Marius by means of a flight through the sewers of Paris. All seems headed for a happy ending until Javert shows up again and this leads to an incredible climax.About the abridgementThe one major issue of this book is Hugo's long "asides" is which he departs from the action to write about anything he finds of interest. In the printed version, one can simply flip by those pages to get back to the story. That is not so easy in an audio version so these tangents have been removed. The whole story, all 33 plus hours of it, remains. Language: English. Narrator: Walter Covell. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/jimc/000072/bk_jimc_000072_sample.mp3. Robinson Crusoe , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 641min
Robinson Crusoe is considered by many to be the first novel in the English language. The term 'Robinsonade' has even been coined to describe the various spin-offs of Robinson Crusoe. It is astonishing how much of the book has become part of the language; the very term 'Robinson Crusoe' has become synonymous with the concept of a castaway. Likewise, 'Man Friday', Crusoe's servant on the island, has become a name commonly used to describe an indispensable assistant who will turn his or her hand to anything. The idea of being marooned is one that grabs all of us, from the thought of the effects of isolation on the human mind to what records we'd take. Although there were many true tales of castaways in Defoe's time (his inspiration for Crusoe was probably a Scottish sailor named Alexander Selkirk, who was rescued in 1709 after four years on the uninhabited island of Más a Tierra in the Juan Fernández Islands off the Chilean coast), the attraction of Defoe's work is that it departs from the dryly factual and explores instead the thoughts, feelings and occupations of the castaway, and hence the story achieves its everyman status. The theme behind Crusoe's adventures is open to a wide range of interpretations. James Joyce saw him as a symbol of British colonialism; JP Hunter saw him as a pilgrim progressing through adversity and experience towards a closer relationship with God. ungekürzt. A crown can be won; blood cannot be changed. The Conqueror's Queen is the third title in Joanna Courtney's sweeping historical series, The Queens of Conquest. William of Normandy is a rough man, but what more can you expect of an illegitimate son trying to muscle his way into a dukedom? After a violent start to their courtship, Mathilda of Flanders discovers William to be a man of unexpected sensitivity, driven by two goals: to prove himself by becoming a great ruler and to build a warm and secure family. Mathilda has grown up safe in the love of her powerful parents, her rough and tumble brothers and, above all, her younger sister and closest confidante, Judith. Now, though, they must separate. Judith marries the glamorous Earl Torr and departs for life in England, and Mathilda heads to Normandy with William. When William's cousin King Edward of England weakens, his eyes are cast across the narrow sea to the glittering throne he promised Mathilda as a young bride. Mathilda supports him keenly in his challenge, longing to live close to her sister once more. But as reward for his support for William, Torr wants more than William is prepared to cede, and there will be no alliance. The two sisters find themselves on either side not only of a sea but of a bitter battle, and the events of 1066 bring great personal loss, as well as victory, to the Conqueror's Queen. ungekürzt. Fisherman's Winter , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 416min
An enchanting fly-fishing guide to the rivers and streams of South America. Originally published in 1954, Fisherman’s Winter is Roderick Haig-Brown’s final installment in his well-known “seasons” cycle. With a unique blend of experience and observation, Haig-Brown brings readers through the exotic rivers of South America in the winter months, showing rather than explaining the many things he encounters. Rather than writing about typical winter fishing, Haig-Brown departs from British Columbia, where the other titles in his seasons cycle take place, and heads to unknown rivers in South America, where he learns as much as his readers will. Fishing a “second summer,” Haig-Brown inhabits Argentina and Chile, where five- and six-pound trout are abundant in the streams of the Andes. The many chapters on fishing in South America include: The Lake of Big Rainbows, The Laja River, Some Incidental Things, Farm, Forest, and River, Lago Maihue and the Calcurrupe, The Beach of the Deer, Rivers of the Pampas, The Trout and Salmon of South America, Some Birds of Southern Chile and Argentina, Some Trees and Plants of Southern Chile, and much more! Since Haig-Brown’s revolutionary fishing journey to South America, one that few anglers had dreamed of before this, many flyfishermen since have fished their own second summers on the fresh, cold rivers found there. Let this guide be your own tour of the wondrous rivers and streams of the Southern Hemisphere. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John McLain. Blind Kiss , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 464min
From the national best-selling author of Before We Were Strangers, Swear on This Life, and Wish You Were Here comes a powerful story of two people who spend years denying their scientifically proven chemistry.Penny spends her afternoons sitting outside a sandwich shop, surrounded by ghosts. Fourteen years ago, this shop was her childhood dance studio - and she was a dancer on the rise. Now she’s a suburban housewife, dreading the moment her son departs for MIT, leaving her with an impeccably decorated McMansion and a failing marriage. She had her chance at wild, stars-in-her-eyes happiness, but that was a lifetime ago. After The Kiss. Before The Decision. The Kiss was soulful. Magical. Earth-shattering. And it was all for a free gift card. Asked to participate in a psych study that posed the question “can you have sexual chemistry without knowing what the other person looks like?” Penny agreed to be blindfolded, make polite conversation with a total stranger, and kiss him. She never expected The Kiss to change her life forever and introduce her to Gavin: tattooed, gorgeous, and spontaneous enough to ask her out seconds after the blindfolds came off.For a year, they danced between friendship and romance - until Penny made The Decision that forced them to settle for friendship. Now, 14 years later, both of their lives are about to radically change - and it’s his turn to decide what will become of their once-in-a-lifetime connection. ungekürzt. Language: English.
