Eminent Italian early music keyboardist Manuel Tomadin adds to a splendid discography on Brilliant Classics with his eighth release for the label. Commemorating the centenary of the apparition of Mary at Fátima, Portugal (1917), Tomadin performs settings for organ of the well-known Marian hymn Magnificat by four composers from the Hanseatic north of Germany, all talented students of Dutch organist-composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, father of the north German organ tradition. And what more fitting organ could be selected for this tribute than the fine Dell'Orto & Lanzini instrument, modelled on 17th-century organs of the Hanseatic school, housed in a Piedmontese parish church dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima? This organ reflects the rich tonal resources that would have been at the skilled fingertips of Scheidemann, Schildt, Weckmann and Strungk, who were active in the 17th century around the Hanseatic area on such organs as those at St Catherine's and St James's, Hamburg, the Marktkirche, Hannover, and Braunschweig's St Martini church. Manuel Tomadin is joined in these Magnificat performances by award winning tenor and early music ensemble director Giuseppe Maletto. The Magnificat, the hymn to the Virgin Mary, is one of the most ancient and sacred liturgical texts, and has been set to music numerous times by composers between the 16th and 18th century. This new recording presents Magnificat settings by Scheidemann, Schildt, Weckmann and Strungk, all active in Northern Germany and all pupils of the great Sweelinck, master of Baroque counterpoint. This recording was made on the occasion of the centenary of the apparition of Mary of Fatima, and played on the beautiful Dell'Orto & Lanzini organ of the Parish of Pinerolo, an instrument inspired by the 17th century Hanseatic school. The booklet offers extensive liner notes in English and Italian, and the full specifications and photos of the organ.

Aprendí is Volaño's 2nd studio album, and comes after a six-year recording hiatus from Marco Pasillas. Perhaps as a result of having to start again from scratch, Pasillas looked to groovier and earthier compositions, while recruiting Italian composer and keyboardist, Sal Ingrilli for help on the industrial funk of 'Looking for a Fix' and the pulsing, haunting beauty of 'Bane of Silence'. The entire album, in fact, presents a very cohesive-sounding fusion of electronic sounds and traditional acoustic instrumentation. The string arrangements swell on the album opener 'The Mischosen One' and the secularly sacred feelings of 'Need for it Still', whilst instilling a sense of cinematic qualities to the album. Spanish influenced guitar contributions to 'Un Quebrador Asesino' from former Camel Toe bandmate Cel Pasillas, shift the music into a kind of futuristic rumba, complete with bubbling electronic parts and a characteristically expansive Volaño arrangement. Rick Baeza's keyboard solo on the dreamy 'Losing the Fight', round out the outside contributions, which helped fuel the "dis-ambiguous" nature of the lyrical content of most tracks. Pasillas' richly mournful vocals on the equally mournful 'The Elephant Man' closes the record with a sense of wavering dread and excitement that keeps you on edge and finally, let's you go. Aprendí takes creatively inspiring liberties with the base principles of latin, rock, hip-hop and electronic music, fusing these elements into a rich, immersive impression that continues to reveal deeper and more fulfilling nuances with each repeated listen.

Digitally remastered and expanded edition including two bonus tracks. Includes booklet with 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork with previously unseen photos and new interview. Gary Wright's place in musical history was undoubtedly secured by the huge international hit single 'Dream Weaver', a recording that still has an afterlife to this day. But that wasn't the first time Wright had generated interest in his musical career. Back in the late '60s this New Jersey born musician relocated to the UK and, on the encouragement of Island Records boss Chris Blackwell, joined forces with Spooky Tooth, one of the most respected acts of the time. When Spooky Tooth broke up, Wright moved back to America and secured a prestigious solo deal with the Warner Brothers label, recording the Dream Weaver album which proved to be an unexpected success, selling close to a million copies. Refocusing his attention, he quickly set about recording the follow up album, once again recorded in Los Angeles, and building on the minimalist, layered keyboard style that he had become known for. It also featured a few of his highly regarded touring musicians such as drummer Jim Keltner, keyboardist David Foster and future Toto bassist Steve Porcaro. Partly spiritual in nature the tracks appear to conjoin both lyrically and musically. There is a decidedly progressive rock feel to the presentation, partly driven by precision musicianship and expansive arrangements. Tracks such as 'Watersign', 'Time Machine' and 'Phantom Writer' are impressive slices of prog with a defined AOR edge, bringing to mind Supertramp, Procol Harum and the Alan Parsons Project.

Shadow Merchant got it's start in 2007 when radiologists Dr. Sean Reiter and Dr. Paul McGinnis, while working in the same practice, discovered that they shared an affinity for prog rock. Both were experienced musicians- guitarist Reiter had been in a band that opened for one his favorite groups, Kansas, while McGinnis was a longtime drummer with a style reminiscent of Rush's Neal Peart and Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy. The two radiologists began to rehearse together and, before long, Reiter had composed an album's worth of material for the teaming - a concept album he called 'The Tunnel'. Still, they needed some more members to turn their duo into a full band. Reiter asked a friend who was involved with music if he knew anyone who: a) played bass b) sang c) wanted to be in a progressive rock band It turns out his friend did know someone- his son-in-law, Howard Whitman, who had an extensive background as a professional musician, playing bass and singing in a variety of local cover bands. It just so happened that Whitman was also a lifelong devotee of the prog, and had longed to be in a band in which he could play bass with the aggressive style of Chris Squire. Another friend of Reiter and McGinnis joined on keyboards and, by 2008, the first incarnation of Shadow Merchant was born. After a set at a private party (which was a resounding success), the quartet began to develop Reiter's songs to turn them into an album. But over time, the original keyboardist decided to move on. The now-trio set about finding a new fourth member and, after a series of auditions, met up with New Jersey-based keyboardist Donald A. Henney, Jr. Don was the perfect missing link the band was looking for, bringing sturdy musicianship, and composing/arranging skills, as well as advanced keyboard technology to the group. By 2011, Shadow Merchant v2.0 was playing professional gigs, starting at Northeast Philly's famed Whisky Tango nightclub. In November of that year, they were invited by NYC-based InsideOut recording artists JOLLY to be on the bill of a night of prog rock at The Legendary Dobbs in South Philly. While continuing work on it's CD, Shadow Merchant further developed as a live band, playing gigs at the North Star Bar and other locations in 2012. That year, Philadelphia classic rock radio station WMGK introduced a new contest, Rock MD, a 'battle of the bands' competition for local groups that featured at least one physician as a member. Based on the strenth of a video for it's original song 'Noah', Shadow Merchant was named a finalist in Rock MD 2012 and played at the Keswick Theatre (former site of RoSfest) on 10/11/12. 2013 saw the band return to The Legendary Dobbs, and play other shows including the Rockin' Docs benefit held in May at Philadelphia's World Cafe Live. As recording of 'The Tunnel' CD neared completion, Shadow Merchant was again named a finalist in the 2013 Rock MD competition and returned to the Keswick on 10/09/13. 2014 saw the band return to the World Cafe Live and to be on the bill at the international progressive rock festival, RoSfest, in Gettysburg. Shadow Merchant describe themselves as a classic progressive rock band with a modern twist. Their unique style also has elements that echo some of their most important influences such as Rush, Kansas, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Yes, Genesis, and ELP.

Since 1998, Raw Deluxe has performed their high-energy show for audiences both nationally and internationally. The group's exciting live act stems from their well-crafted songs and strong improvisational skills. The band formed when bassist, Chris Arenas, and drummer, Chris Spano, began performing with keyboardist, Matt Fleming. The trio enlisted DJ M3, the well-noted San Francisco house/hip-hop DJ, and a host of Bay Area horn players. Throughout the late nineties, the group infiltrated the Bay Area's acid-jazz and hip-hop circuits, performing at parties such as Toph One's, 'The Funkside,' and Mr. Brown's, 'Elephunk' and 'Double Trouble'. Raw Deluxe soon made their first trip to Europe, performing throughout the Eastern part of the continent during the summer of 1999. In 2000, Raw Deluxe was voted 'Best Jazz Band' by the San Francisco Bay Guardian's, 'Best of the Bay'. The band was also nominated for 2001 Best Music Act, on citysearch.com, along side artists such as Green Day, Boz Scaggs, and Vinyl, where they were noted as 'One of the best original acts currently in the Bay Area.' The group was then nominated for the 2002 SF Weekly Music Awards, 'Best Soul / Blues / Funk' category. The critically acclaimed EP, 'Back to the Jungle,' was released by the band on the Reel Deal Music label in 2001. XLR8R magazine noted the CD as 'Killer jazz-funk from this San Francisco outfit, complete with horns, wailing keys and tight rhythm. They've been quietly winning loyal fans for the past few years, and with these six original tracks it's easy to see why. Check 'em out.' The single 'Get Some' was also featured on the Subkoncious Records compilation, 'Elephunk / Live-N-Direct' that year as well. In October 2005, the band released their follow up album 'Back By Popular Demand'. During the course of the recording the band enlisted guest McEes Lexxx Luthor, CB, and Mic Blake of the seminal jazz / hip-hop group Alphbet Soup. By the release of the album the McEes became offical members of Raw Deluxe. Today the band is comprised of Chris Spano - drums, Chris Arenas - bass, Matt Fleming - electric piano/organ, Tony Jurado - saxophone and features McEes Lexxx Luthor, Mic Blake and Soulati of Felonious. The group continues to maintain a busy schedule between time in the studio and performing with acts such as Digital Underground, Too Short, Olu Dara, and The Breakestra. Raw Deluxe released their newest album, 'Raw Communication', at a packed CD release party at San Francisco's Elbo Room on March 6, 2009. The East Bay Express review of the album said 'Blending live hip-hop (drums, bass, keys, and sax) with Jurassic 5-style group raps (Lexx Luthor, MicBlake, and Soulati trade freely), Raw Deluxe delivers an exuberant hybrid of jazz, funk, and hip-hop.'
