Rodney Alcala is a serial murderer that is most often referred to as the Dating Game Killer after he was a contestant on the popular game show in 1978. He was sentenced to death in California in 2010 for committing five murders in the state between 1977 and 1979. It is believed, however, that he may have over 130 victims. Alcala's charisma and murderous output have a striking similarity to that of Ted Bundy. More than one police detective has referred to him as a "killing machine". He was a sexual sadist and specialized in strangling as a form of torture. He would choke his victims into unconsciousness then revive them only to repeat the torture again. He specialized in creating false photo auditions in which he would book prospective models for a photo shoot then rape and kill them. A traveling serial killer, Alcala would operate out of the Los Angeles area but would journey as far as the Pacific Northwest in search of victims. He would have a locker in Seattle where he would keep a stash of mementos and photographs of his victims. In September of 2016, authorities released a series of photographs that they believe could be additional victims of Alcala. They are now asking for the public's help in identifying who the subjects in the photos are. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sangita Chauhan. This young listeners' edition of Christina Baker Kline's New York Times best-selling novel Orphan Train follows a young foster girl who forms an unlikely bond with a 91-year-old woman. Adapted and condensed for a young audience, Orphan Train Girl includes an author's note. Molly Ayer has been in foster care since she was eight years old. Most of the time, Molly knows it's her attitude that's the problem, but after being shipped from one family to another, she's had her fair share of adults treating her like an inconvenience. So when Molly's forced to help an elderly woman clean out her attic for community service, Molly is wary. Just another adult to treat her like a troublemaker. But from the very moment they meet, Molly realizes that Vivian, a well-off 91-year-old, isn't like any of the adults she's encountered before. Vivian asks Molly questions about her life and actually listens when Molly responds. Molly soon sees they have more in common than she thought. Vivian was once an orphan, too - an Irish immigrant to New York City who was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children - and she can understand, better than anyone else, the emotional binds that have been making Molly's life so hard. Together, they not only clear boxes of past mementos from Vivian's attic, but forge a path of friendship, forgiveness, and new beginnings for their future. ungekürzt. Language: English. The tradition of Victorian mourning jewelry began with Queen Victoria after the death of her husband, Prince Albert. Without photography, mementos of personal remembrance were used to honor the dead so that their loved ones could commemorate their memory and keep their spirits close. Ashes were placed within rings, and necklaces were made out of hair, and the concept of death photography, small portraits of the deceased, were often encased behind glass. Mourning jewelry became a fashion statement as much as a way to cope with grief, and as their pain evolved over the years, so did their jewelry. But what about the sadness and the memories they kept close to them at all times? The death-day visions and the reoccurring nightmares? Wytovich's poetry explores the horror that breeds inside of the lockets, the quiet terror that hides in the center of the rings. Her collection shows that mourning isn't a temporary state of being, but rather a permanent sickness, an encompassing disease. Her women are alive and dead, lovers and ghosts. They live in worlds that we cannot see, but that we can feel at midnight, that we can explore at three a.m. Wytovich shows us that there are hearts to shadows and pulses beneath the grave. To her, mourning jewelry isn't something that you wear around your neck. It's not fashion or a trend. It's something that you carry inside of you, something that no matter how much it screams, you just can't seem to let it out. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Lesley Ann Fogle. Food, family, and secrets combine in Cathy Lamb's emotional and deeply honest novel as one woman discovers the recipes and life lessons that have shaped her family's past, and could guide her toward a second chance at happiness. Two years ago, Olivia Martindale left behind her Montana hometown and her husband, Jace, certain it was the best decision for both of them. Back temporarily to protect her almost-adopted daughters from their biological mother, she discovers an old, handwritten cookbook in the attic. Its pages are stained and torn, their edges scorched by flame. Some have been smeared by water or tears. The recipes are written in different hands and in different languages. In between the pages are intriguing mementos, including a feather, a pressed rose, a charm, and unfamiliar photographs. Hoping the recipes will offer a window into her grandmother's closely guarded past, Olivia decides to make each dish, along with their favorite family cake recipes, and video record her attempts. The result, like much of her life to date, involves a parade of near-disasters and chaotic appearances by her doctor mother, her blunt grandma, her short-tempered sister, and Olivia's two hilarious daughters. The project is messy, real - and an unintended hit with her viewers. Even more surprising is the family history Olivia is uncovering, and her own reemerging ties to Montana, and to Jace. Generations of women have shared these recipes, offering strength and nourishment to each other and their loved ones. Now it's Olivia's turn to find healing - and determine where her home and her heart truly belong. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Lisa Flanagan, Kate Reading. The movement of the train rocked me like a lullaby. I closed my eyes to the dusty countryside and imagined the sign I'd seen only in Gideon's stories: Manifest - A town with a rich past and a bright future. Abilene Tucker feels abandoned. Her father has put her on a train, sending her off to live with an old friend for the summer while he works a railroad job. Armed only with a few possessions and her list of universals, Abilene jumps off the train in Manifest, Kansas, aiming to learn about the boy her father once was. Having heard stories about Manifest, Abilene is disappointed to find that it's just a dried-up, worn-out old town. But her disappointment quickly turns to excitement when she discovers a hidden cigar box full of mementos, including some old letters that mention a spy known as the Rattler. These mysterious letters send Abilene and her new friends, Lettie and Ruthanne, on an honest-to-goodness spy hunt, even though they are warned to "Leave Well Enough Alone". Abilene throws all caution aside when she heads down the mysterious Path to Perdition to pay a debt to the reclusive Miss Sadie, a diviner who only tells stories from the past. It seems that Manifest's history is full of colorful and shadowy characters - and long-held secrets. The more Abilene hears, the more determined she is to learn just what role her father played in that history. And as Manifest's secrets are laid bare one by one, Abilene begins to weave her own story into the fabric of the town. Powerful in its simplicity and rich in historical detail, Clare Vanderpool's debut is a gripping story of loss and redemption. ungekürzt. Language: English.
