Love Without Fear
Any seasoned gardener knows the importance of honesty and patience: prepare the soil, care for the seeds, and hope that something beautiful will grow. Singer-songwriter Andy Berkhout took the same approach when crafting his debut full-length album Love Without Fear. The album showcases Berkhout's unique twist on American folk music. From the opening acoustic guitar strums of "Remain Kind" to the gentle fingerpicking on "Feet On the Ground," Berkhout tells his stories with a sense of calm and intention. Folk staples like the harmonica and banjo help to guide the way. Berkhout also shows that folk doesn't need to be quiet and timid. The slow-starting "Empty Room, Heavy Heart" erupts into a deep wall of sound and percussion. In his short time as a solo artist, Berkhout has established a reputation for dreaming up new ways of engaging music lovers. In 2010, he created The Song Per Week Project and wrote, recorded, and freely released one new song on his website during every week of the year. Although Berkhout has released several volumes of self-recorded material over the last two years, Love Without Fear marks his first studio effort. The album was recorded at R&R Music Labs, a young studio in St. Louis' Dogtown neighborhood. Engineers Ryan Albritton and Ryan Lewis (The Northwoods, Messy Jiverson) experimented with a variety of different room arrangements to capture the acoustic subtleties of the songs. Much of the album was recorded live with no overdubs. "I really wanted to make a record that would represent my natural sound, and knew this was the right way to do it," says Berkhout. So what exactly does the title Love Without Fear mean? The phrase comes from the album's closing track, "Love of Mine," which was written during a rainy summer night. "I was sitting on the floor in my room playing guitar and those words just came out," recalls Berkhout. "It's about what happens when we bring our best selves forward and embrace the uncertainty-when we allow ourselves to just be in the present moment. I think this album expresses a little piece of that."- Shop: odax
