My back story began one fateful day in 1984 in health class. This particular day would be anything but routine, for a fifth grader who was about to take a routine test at school, required of all its students. We were asked to stand in a single file. Lined up for what, we didn't know. But it wasn't for the daily morning roll call. At first I wasn't worried, not until we had to lift our shirts so the nurse could check our back for unevenness. To perform what is otherwise known as the Adams Forward Bend Test. Screenings were performed during physical education classes. It took approximately one minute per student. Boys were screened separately from girls. During the screening you were asked to stand straight, but relaxed, with your arms hanging loosely at your sides at about the level of your knees, keeping your feet together, while looking straight ahead. Two screenings were required before parents were notified to see an orthopedist. What seemed like a simple examination was difficult for my young mind to understand. When it was finally my turn I was nervous, but I didn't have a chance at relief when it was over. The nurse pulled me aside from the rest of the group. She wanted to take a closer look at an "area of concern." I don't know what was more troubling, hearing her words, or being the only one of my peers to have to hear them. The right side of my body was more pronounced than my left. Another wards, I had what could only be described as a hump in my back. I would have to see a specialist for further assessment. Needless to say, I was stunned. All I could do was stand there in silence, isolated with my own thoughts. I didn't know what to think. I had never heard of scoliosis, much less knew what it was. I was filled with apprehension at the thought of seeing a doctor. At the doctor's office they took a series of x-rays of my midsection, checking for abnormalities. What they concluded was I had a curvature of the spine measuring between 40-4 ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Amanda Oswalt. The Firebird's Regret (Harley Firebird, #6) (eBook, ePUB)
Is the firebird's past catching up with her? The brakes on Harley's official police vehicle fail, sending her and Bohdan Trask into an icy river. Only Harley's special talents save them. Harley can't dismiss the incident as a mishap, for the coincidences swiftly pile up after that, including her catching a frightening glimpse of someone from her dark past. But is it merely her stressed out imagination, or is the threat real? The Firebird's Regret is part of the Harley Firebird urban fantasy series of novelettes, which is set in the same world as Taylen Carver's Magorian & Jones series. 1.0: The Dragon of Falconer 2.0: The Orc Who Cried 3.0: The Shepherd of Fire 4.0: The Mad Folk of Falconer 5.0: The Badge of Our Tribe 5.5: The Harley Firebird Files 6.0: The Firebird's Regret …and more to come. Urban Fantasy Novelette ___ Praise for Taylen Carver's urban fantasy: Plenty of exciting twists and turns. Feel the tingling of danger, the aha's of escaping death, and the excitement of magic I loved this and will continue on with the series. A very satisfying first book for a new series blends the paranormal and the thriller/suspense you expect in a who done it crime story Love the heroine The story is filled with many interesting characters, and I'm sure throughout the series we will learn more about them and their new Sheriff and I can't wait to read all about them. The author packs this short story with plenty of action and suspense. Do yourself a big favor and be sure to read the entire series. The only drawback - I want to read more of this fantastical world-building, and I want to read it now. Okay, the author really got me on this one… this one surprised the heck out of me this world and the characters in it are fascinating and I want more, more, more. I love all the surprises Falconer and it's residents give us, good or bad ___ Canadian author Taylen Carver writes edgy urban fantasy, doesn't pull punches, and would rather be writing unless otherwise notified. When not writing, Taylen can usually be found inside speculative fiction of other authors. Favourites include Jim Butcher, Charlaine Harris, Kevin Hearne, Laurell K. Hamilton, and Emma Bull.- Shop: buecher
