DA: The Strange Case of Franklin Jones , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 113min
One of the first books ever published to objectively study the life and work of Franklin Jones, also known as Bubba Free John, Da Free John, Adi Da, an infamous cult leader who attracted both devotees and detractors. Contains original essays by Professor Scott Lowe (University of Wisconsin) and Professor David Lane (Mt. San Antonio College). Review by Professor Robert S. Ellwood, formerl Bashford Professor of Oriental Studies, USC, writing in NOVA RELIGIO, "This short book is among the very few important studies of one of the most interesting and outrageous sixties-generation American gurus. This book consists of two essays, both revised versions of articles that appeared in Lane's Exposing Cults: When the Skeptical Mind Confronts the Mystical (New York: Garland, 1994). The first is a hard-headed but fair-minded assessment of the way in which spiritual guides can deliver teaching that is morally and mystically elevated, yet which seems to help others more than the guides themselves, producing the phenomenon of crazy adepts and sane disciples. If this is an accurate description of Da Free John, he far from alone, and the article ought to be useful to generalists in the study of new religions. Scott Lowe's piece, basically an account of his own brief youthful stay with Jones' group in 1974, complements Lane's article with firsthand information of what the group was like in its early years. These two well-written essays make a substantive contribution to our understanding of the dynamics of the disciple-guru relationship in new religious movements." ungekürzt. Language: English. 1 (One): A Guide to Enlightenment , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 109min
All near-death experiences (NDEs) change people's lives for the better. Those affected became enlightened. Humanity worldwide thirsts for spiritualism to become enlightened. It is written in our DNA; it is mankind's birthright and the next evolution of mankind. Enlightenment can be achieved by all who wish to experience the exhilarating intoxication of being one with the universe. NDE is not necessary to become enlightened. Practicing the principles of the right path with trance meditation activates intuition, causing enlightenment by the superconscious mind to know and be guided through our mission in life. In the past, this was called the flash of genius responsible for the advancement of the sciences and math. Today strife reigns on Earth. Our civilization must evolve to overcome extinctions and escape the fate of previous civilizations. Technology has caught up with spiritualism, and quantum physics has objectively documented global EM bio-rhythmic changes, during global events such as 9/11 and Princess Dianna's death. This is the global consciousness compiled by the 7.4 billion people on Earth. Global change is inevitable, as is the next human evolution, and the new era of enlightenment is now. This guide offers individual, inspirational, spiritual and thought-provoking concepts for the global citizen. G. J. Link, MD, PhD, is a world-renowned neurologist with subspecialties in neuropsychiatry from Harvard, neurorehabilitation from Cornell, and neuroimmunology from the Karolinska Institute. She noticed that consulting with patients regarding living a more spiritual life frequently resulted in improving the symptoms of their disease. After a NDE, much research was collected to compile this book. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tim Paulson. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/067505/bk_acx0_067505_sample.mp3. Language vs. Reality: Why Language Is Good for Lawyers and Bad for Scientists
A fascinating examination of how we are both played by language and made by language: the science underlying the bugs and features of humankind's greatest invention. Language is said to be humankind's greatest accomplishment. But what is language actually good for? It performs poorly at representing reality. It is a constant source of distraction, misdirection, and overshadowing. In fact, N. J. Enfield notes, language is far better at persuasion than it is at objectively capturing the facts of experience. Language cannot create or change physical reality, but it can do the next best thing: reframe and invert our view of the world. In Language vs. Reality, Enfield explains why language is bad for scientists (who are bound by reality) but good for lawyers (who want to win their cases), why it can be dangerous when it falls into the wrong hands, and why it deserves our deepest respect. Enfield offers a lively exploration of the science underlying the bugs and features of language. He examines the tenuous relationship between language and reality; details the array of effects language has on our memory, attention, and reasoning; and describes how these varied effects power narratives and storytelling as well as political spin and conspiracy theories. Why should we care what language is good for? Enfield, who has spent twenty years at the cutting edge of language research, argues that understanding how language works is crucial to tackling our most pressing challenges, including human cognitive bias, media spin, the "post-truth" problem, persuasion, the role of words in our thinking, and much more.- Shop: buecher

Khirbet Qumran and Ain Feshkha
For 60 years Qumran research has been focused on epigraphy, exegesis, and the historical sources of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The manuscripts are now published and accessible, and research is turning in a positive way to the archaeology of the site and its context. The time has come to provide researchers with a complete documentation. The excavator, Roland de Vaux, had given preliminary reports and a valuable interpretation made in the immediate aftermath of the excavations. Since considerable progress has been made in the archeology of Hellenistic and Roman Palestine, however, Qumran has to be reassessed and the interpretation objectively verified.Volume IIIA presents an up-to-date archaeological reconsideration: a shorter and more precise chronology, in which the earthquake of 31 BC is deleted; the concept of an Essene community is challenged, owing to the lack of a suitable infrastructure; the cemetery itself is connected with a Jewish diaspora scattered around the Dead Sea. Other facilities strengthen the Jewish character of the site, however. The function of Qumran fits better with the rites of a pilgrimage on the occasion of the festivals of Passover and Pentecost. In the second part, the peripheral Essene facilities, expanded around an earlier Hellenistic center, are analyzed and described. The essay seeks to outline their internal consistency and to determine their function. The restoration of a stratigraphy, by cross-checking the excavation archives, leads to a redistribution of pottery in four levels in a more precise chronology. The reconsideration makes use of anthropology, which opens up the archaeological field and throws additional light on the manuscripts.- Shop: buecher

Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 424min
Ayaan Hirsi Ali's Infidel meets The Handmaid's Tale.Since September 11, 2001, the Western world has been preoccupied with Islam and its role in terrorism. Yet, public debate about the faith is polarized. One camp praises "the religion of peace", while the other claims all Muslims are terrorists. Canadian human rights activist Yasmine Mohammed believes both sides are dangerously wrong. In Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam, Yasmine speaks her truth as a woman born in the Western world yet raised in a fundamentalist Islamic home. Despite being a first-generation Canadian, she never felt at home in the West. And even though she attended Islamic schools and wore the hijab since age nine, Yasmine never fit in with her Muslim family, either. With one foot in each world, Yasmine is far enough removed from both to see them objectively, yet close enough to see them honestly.Part Ayaan Hirsi Ali's Infidel, part The Handmaid's Tale, Yasmine's memoir takes listeners into a world few Westerners are privy to. As a college educator for over 15 years, Yasmine's goal is to unveil the truth. Is FGM Islamic or cultural? Is the hijab forced or a choice? Is ISIS a representation of "true" Islam or a radical corruption? And why is there so much conflicting information? Like most insular communities, the Islamic world has both an "outside voice" and an "inside voice". It's all but impossible for bystanders to get a straight answer.Without telling anyone what to believe, Unveiled navigates the rhetoric and guides truth-seekers through media narratives, political correctness, and outright lies while encouraging listeners to come to their own conclusions. ungekürzt. Roy Wilkins: The Quiet Revolutionary and the NAACP: Civil Rights and the Struggle for Black Equality in the Twentieth Century , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 491min
Roy Wilkins (1901-1981) spent 46 years of his life serving the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and led the organization for more than 20 years. Under his leadership, the NAACP spearheaded efforts that contributed to landmark civil rights legislation, including the 1964 Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act.In Roy Wilkins: The Quiet Revolutionary and the NAACP, Yvonne Ryan offers the first biography of this influential activist, as well as an analysis of his significant contributions to civil rights in America. While activists in Alabama were treading the highways between Selma and Montgomery, Wilkins was walking the corridors of power in Washington, D.C., working tirelessly in the background to ensure that the rights they fought for were protected through legislation and court rulings. With his command of congressional procedure and networking expertise, Wilkins was regarded as a strong and trusted presence on Capitol Hill, and received greater access to the Oval Office than any other civil rights leader during the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson.Roy Wilkins fills a significant gap in the history of the civil rights movement, objectively exploring the career and impact of one of its forgotten leaders. The book is published by The University Press of Kentucky. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks."The first bio of a crucial, if now-overlooked, figure. Solid and thought provoking." (American History)"The longtime head of the NAACP was long overdue for a deeply researched and elegantly written biography. This is it." (The Daily Beast)"The book's true focus and achievement is in its highly detailed, richly researched account of Wilkins's role in the NAACP." (Publishers Weekly) ungekürzt. Language: English.
