The Confession , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 545min
Confessions abound - some of them quite unexpected - in Sheldon Siegel's legal thriller, the fifth in the outstanding Mike Daley/Rosie Fernandez series set in San Francisco. Mike Daley doesn't go to confession much since he left the priesthood twenty years ago and became a lawyer, but that doesn't stop his old friend, Father Ramon Aguirre, from trying to get him there. "It wouldn't kill you to go to church once in a while," he tells Mike. But it does kill someone. For several months, a ruinous sexual harassment suit has been building against the San Francisco Catholic Archdiocese, and when the plaintiff's lawyer is found dead, an apparent suicide, an almost audible sigh of relief is heard in certain quarters. But that is before the police find evidence of murder. Even worse - the evidence points to Father Aguirre. Mike and his ex-wife law partner, Rosie, jump in to take the priest's case, but what started out as difficult soon appears impossible as forensics, witnesses, and secrets from Father Aguirre's past all incriminate their client. Soon, their wits are the only things keeping the priest from a life sentence or worse, and wits simply may not be enough-unless they can conjure up a miracle of their own. Of Siegel's most recent book, Publishers Weekly said, "The verdict is clear; another win for Siegel." And so it is again with The Confession. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sam Guncler. The hate is deep. The death is slow. The cause is silent. You know that Atlanta PD has given up on a case when they call in Dr. Damon Keane. The sleuth scientist is quietly famous in forensic circles for unraveling the most daunting technical puzzles, but this case is bewildering. Two people are already dead. The third victim, a priest, is dying by inches in an Atlanta hospital, and the cause is a complete mystery to doctors and detectives alike. As if matters weren't strange enough, the dying priest's rosary beads have suddenly turned the color of blood. Despite that bizarre transformation, Keane knows that he's not chasing something supernatural. The killer is a man - twisted by anger and a lust for vengeance - but still very much human. As the death toll mounts, the story races to London's Hyde Park and on to the edge of Siberia and a place once home to the world's most secret atomic city. For all of his perception and skill, Keane is always one step behind.Time is running out. The killer is making final preparations to unleash a cloud of death over the entire city of Atlanta. By now, Damon Keane has learned that the only way to take down this villain is to outmatch his cunning in a face-to-face showdown. Winter's Fire: The Rise of Sigurd 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 697min
Sigurd Haraldarson has proven himself a great Viking warrior and a dangerous enemy. He has gone a long way towards avenging the murder of his family. Yet his vengeance is not complete. The oath breaker King Gorm - who betrayed Sigurd's father - still lives, and, so long as the king draws breath, the scales remain unbalanced. But Sigurd and his wolf pack of warriors are not at full strength, and to confront the king now would mean death. And so they sail west to Sweden, where a local warlord employs them as mercenaries, but in a brutal siege Sigurd, Floki and Valgerd are taken by the enemy, their fate to be sacrificed in return for the gods' favour. Escaping the priest's knife at the last moment, they steal a sacred treasure: Gungnir, the legendary spear of Odin. The journey Sigurd and his colleagues are destined to take is punctuated by blood and betrayal. Uneasy alliances are made; silver, fame-lust and the Odin spear draw men to Sigurd's banner until he commands a war host of his own. It is time to return to Norway to face the oath breaker. When storms rip the sky, men say that it is Odin, the Wild Huntsman, summoning the souls of the dead. And Sigurd's course is set. His return to his homeland foretells death. He will lead his warriors against King Gorm in an epic fight to the death, and the clash of ax and sword and shield will shake the timbers of Valhalla itself, for Sigurd's bloodlust is like the Spear God's passing, and his revenge will be the Wings of the Storm.... ungekürzt. Priests: The Guise and the Guys Behind the Collar , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 570min
Priests: The Guise and the Guys Behind the Collar captures the diverse personalities of over 20 Catholic priests in a novel born out of the experiences and perceptions of Monsignor Gaston A. Hebert over his 54 years in the priesthood. During that time he served as a teacher, pastor, vicar general, and diocesan administrator in the Diocese of Little Rock. By his realistic portrayal of priests sans halos or horns, he conveys insight into the joys and sorrows, challenges and temptations, successes and failures found in every priest's life. As the priests struggle through their own character flaws, they also combat the changes in the Church and in society from 1960 to the present. Situations evolve encompassing the seven major vices; racial, ethnic, and religious prejudice; addiction; abortion; sexual promiscuity, homosexuality, pedophilia, incest; the Vietnam War and clericalism, within the historical context of the period. To describe the novel as Christian fiction might be misleading as it is not saccharin and is rarely didactic, seeking rather to portray the clergy as real men, tempted and flawed like all humanity, but driven to serve God. It is unlikely the reader could complete the novel without recognizing both the good and bad character traits of priests and ministers he may have known, as well as his own. The author holds degrees in philosophy and English; taught English and Drama for 15 years at Catholic High School in Little Rock, Arkansas; was pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Pocahontas, Arkansas, for six years; was pastor of the then-largest parish in Arkansas, Christ the King Church, in Little Rock, for 20 years; was vicar general from 1988 to 2006, and then became the administrator of the diocese for two years. He was named a protonotary apostolic by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008. He published The Faux Bishop's Gems in 2009, based on a series of his essays previously published in The Arkansas Catholic. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gaston A. Hebert. Winter's King , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1320min
The Monster of Karth has risen once more. Quin Tern of Azbar has met his fate, and his council has borne the price of crossing Raz i'Syul Arro. Now, as the cruel walls of the city fade into the winter storms at his back, Raz rides north, seeking to take the High Priest Talo Brahnt up on an offer he never should have refused. The path Raz has chosen, though, is a bloody one, and before long he and his new companions find themselves pitted against hardships they can neither anticipate nor ignore. As man and snow and beast alike rise up to block their path, it seems almost as though the North itself has woken to wage war against the Monster. And yet, Raz's greatest challenge still looms ahead. Far to the north, like a plague beneath the trees, Gûlraht Baoill, Kayle of the savage mountain tribes, leads his armies further east with each passing day. He has set his hungry gaze upon the reaches of Cyurgi' Di, the High Citadel, and desires nothing more than to see it razed from the face of the world, offering it and its blasphemous "false-prophets" up as sacrifice to his Stone Gods. Syrah Brahnt, the High Priest's adopted daughter and protégé, has found him out, discovering his plan to lay siege to her home, cutting her and the rest of the Laorin off from the world. As it is, though, there is little and less that she can do, and when the first of the Kayle's generals reaches the base of the mountain pass, Syrah is left with only one option. In the end, she will have to face the wrath of the tribes herself.... Little does she know that the Monster is coming, riding hard to lend her his blades. Simon Peter - Sifted as Wheat: Book 18 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 31min
Simon Peter - Sifted as Wheat examines the sad episode of Peter's denial of the Lord. "Simon, Simon," the Lord says, "behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted (restored), strengthen thy brethren." Simon got his warning here; if he had only taken heed of it, what a different sequel would have been recorded! If he had only been chaff and not really wheat, Satan would not have wanted to sift him. It was because he was the real wheat that Satan desired to get him in his power. Satan does not tempt an unconverted person; he tempts a child of God. But he governs and controls entirely the unconverted - drives them before him at his will. When Jesus was arrested "they all forsook Him and fled". Afterward we see Peter following "afar off", and then again we see him in the high priest's hall, where there was a fire, and he warms himself by it. What steps we see in Peter's downward course, leading to his denial of the Lord he loved! First, declaring he was ready to die for him, although the Lord had just told him that Satan was desiring to have him, and that he was praying for Peter. Next, he was sleeping when he should have been watching, then fighting when he should have been quiet, then following afar off when he should have been near, and finally sitting down with the enemies of Christ and warming himself. With such a prelude one can only expect what followed - Peter denied with oaths and cursings that he had ever known the Lord. The only path of safety therefore is found in keeping as near to the Lord as we can and as far away as possible from all the saviors of the world. The moral lessons for each of us from this sad episode in Peter's history are many and plain. It should teach us to walk softly, prayerfully, and ever keep near to the Lord. ungekürzt. Sacred Sins, Hörbuch, Digital, 301min
Combining explosive suspense with sensual passion, the best-selling author of Carnal Innocence and The Reef turns up the heat in this classic tale, available for the first time in hardcover - the sizzling story of a man and woman on the trail of a demented killer...and on the verge of surrendering to a dangerous love. In the last lazy days of summer, the merciless two-week heat wave is the biggest story in Washington, D.C. But the weather is finally knocked off the front pages when a young woman is found strangled to death - a priest's white silk amice pulled taut around her throat. Pinned near the scarf is a note that simply reads her sins are forgiven her. It is a chilling crime, made even more terrifying when it is followed by a second murder...and then a third. Suddenly every headline is devoted to the killer the press has dubbed "the Priest."The slayings have piqued the interest of Dr. Tess Court, a top-notch psychiatrist dedicated to treating the problems of the human mind. And when the police make little headway in solving the crimes, Tess is reluctantly thrust into the very heart of the investigation. Called in to create a detailed psychological profile of the murderer, she comes up with a disturbing and frightening portrait of a twisted soul who believes he is not murdering - but ministering. Detective Ben Paris doesn't give a damn about the killer's soul or his psyche, and he makes it clear that he thinks calling in a psychiatrist is on a par with ringing up a psychic hot line. What he can't dismiss so readily is his immediate and irresistible attraction to Tess. Tall, dark, and good-looking, Ben has a reputation with women that is legendary, and with good reason. But the coolly elegant Tess doesn't react to Ben like any other woman he's ever known - and he finds the challenge enticing. Now, as the two are thrown together in a perilous quest to stop a serial k Language: English. Narrator: Carolyn McCormick. Unbreakable Mind: Channeling Your Survival Instincts After Catastrophic Injury , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 387min
Throughout my life I have done things my way, and they have always worked out - as if I've had luck in my corner. Of course there were challenges along the way, but these were always dealt with head-on and produced great results. This approach brought me around the globe: living from Tel Aviv to London to Tokyo to Jakarta to Buenos Aires; from Wall Street to Main Street to Midaq Alley; from an apartment on Fifth Avenue to living out of my car. No matter what, I was “all in.” This approach has brought me both failures and successes, including a once-thriving business. All of my optimism and bravado came to a crashing halt one cold December holiday night, when after an evening out with good friends, I suffered an accident. I was beaten with a pipe and later found under a moving train, resulting in quadriplegia. Given virtually no chance to walk again, I was devastated. But I also had hope, and lots of it. A fire that exists deep within, and has since childhood, burns on no matter the circumstances. I am here for a bigger mission. What would that mission now be?Nothing could have prepared me for what was to come. Every part of my life - emotional, physical, mental, spiritual, financial, including family and friend relationships, suffered. Still, not 10 seconds of pity passed through me while I lay on that gurney in a cold, dark, sterile hall in the trauma center, with a priest's hand on my arm; I was determined to recover, to heal. This sense of optimism was supported by a deep inner belief that all things in life are impermanent, and no matter how bad it was, it too would eventually pass. Having a background as an entrepreneur, I organized and operated my recovery as a business, down to a daily spreadsheet that had my time split into 15-minute segments. This process changed me in deep, introspective ways, allowing me to get in touch with my heart - with compassion for myself and others. As a result, today I am a changed man; a new person ungekürzt.
