England, 1911. Reverend Albert Canning, a vicar with a passion for spiritualism - and his naive wife, Hester - led a happy existence in the sleepy parish of Cold Ash Holt, Berkshire. As summer dawns, their quiet lives are changed forever by two new arrivals. First comes Cat, the new maid; a free-spirited and disaffected young woman sent down from London after entanglements with the suffragette movement and with the law. Over-educated for her station, Cat baulks at her life of servitude, quickly finding a place for herself in the secret underbelly of local society as she plots her escape. Then comes Robin Durrant, a leading expert in the occult, with whom Albert has been in correspondence, enticed to visit Cold Ash Holt by the vicar's tales of elemental beings in the water meadows around the village. A young man of magnetic charm and beauty, Robin Durrant soon becomes an object of fascination and repressed passion for Albert. During a long spell of oppressive summer heat, the rectory at Cold Ash Holt becomes charged with ambition, love and jealousy; a mixture of emotions so powerful that it leads, ultimately, to murder. ungekürzt. Inside the abandoned houses that bring the dead to life.... In this set of true stories of haunted houses, you'll find something different. You'll notice that haunted houses are no fairy worlds. You can't get away with being a comfortable spectator. More often than not, residents of the house are so petrified and in possible danger that they'd gladly move out and live in an ordinary house. Paranormal investigators have the equipment necessary to detect the presence of anomalies and disembodied spirits. However, when it comes to identifying or measuring how sinister and powerful a spirit is, there is still not enough evidence to prove anything nor is the process simple or straightforward. There is always mystery shrouding haunted houses and their power to draw powerful spirits from elsewhere and a different time period. In this collection of true stories of 10 different haunted houses, you'll find a mixture of moderately disturbing houses to ones that are so horrifyingly scary that it wouldn't be surprising if you get nightmares afterwards.... Here is Bill Bryson’s entertaining and illuminating book about the history of the way we live - complete, unabridged and read by the author. Bill Bryson was struck one day by the thought that we devote more time to studying the battles and wars of history than to considering what history really consists of: centuries of people quietly going about their daily business. This inspired him to start a journey around his own house, an old rectory in Norfolk, considering how the ordinary things in life came to be. Along the way, he researched the history of anything and everything, from architecture to electricity, from food preservation to epidemics, from the spice trade to the Eiffel Tower, from crinolines to toilets. And he discovered that there is a huge amount of history, interest and excitement - and even a little danger - lurking in the corners of every home. Where A Short History of Nearly Everything was a sweeping panorama of the world, the universe and everything, At Home peers at private life through a microscope. Bryson applies the same irrepressible curiosity, irresistible wit, stylish prose, and masterful storytelling that made A Short History of Nearly Everything one of the most lauded books of the last decade. ungekürzt. Tom Baker stars as the Fourth Doctor in the second of five thrilling brand new adventures, with Susan Jameson as Mrs Wibbsey. The year is 1861, and the Doctor and Mrs Wibbsey find themselves in the right place at the wrong time. At the rectory they encounter the ill-tempered Reverend Dobbs and his young ward Andrew, whose paper faces hide whatever horrors lie beneath. Tutoring him is one Mr Bewley, whom Mrs Wibbsey is startled to recognise. In Hexford Woods, the Doctor uncovers a secret which Andrew and his friends have been keeping. As the truth begins to emerge about the rectory’s occupants, it also becomes clear why so many people have disappeared from the village. Unless the Doctor and Mrs Wibbsey can help, the whole village will soon be terrorised by a child’s imagination.... With Tom Baker as the Doctor, Susan Jameson as Mrs Wibbsey, Terrence Hardiman as the Reverend Dobbs, Joanna David as Mrs Audley, Guy Harvey as Andrew, Simon Shepherd as Mr Bewley, Charlie Mitchell as Jake, Elinor Coleman as Sally, Geoff Leesley as Harold and Su Douglas as the Cook, The Broken Crown is the second of five linked stories written by Paul Magrs. ungekürzt. During the Second World War, Eastenders Miranda and Ted are sent to the country with another young evacuee, Roberta (Bobbie), to live with two unmarried sisters in their idyllic rectory. The time they spend with Aunt Sophie and Aunt Prudence turns their underprivileged lives into something very near to heaven: gathering wool from hedgerows, initiating do and mend campaigns, and trotting about the countryside with Tom Kitten, Aunt Prudence's pony. But when the Committee for Evacuation object to the women's efforts to adopt all three of them, it is Bobbie who is sent away to live with the Dingwalls in very different circumstances. And when the aunts die, Miranda, Tom and Bobbie - who have come to regard themselves as a family unit - are eventually parted, seemingly forever. The three find each other after the war, and Miranda, now a beautiful young model, falls in love with grown-up Ted Mowbray, but unfortunately he can think of her only as a sister. In turn, he loves Bobbie, who can think of him only as her brother, having already met her beloved Julian during a summer by the sea in Sussex. Necessarily there are many intriguing complications, and all hearts are destined to be broken before a satisfactory emotional climax can be reached. ungekürzt. Language: English. Shortlisted for the Writers' Trust of Canada Fiction Prize One of The Globe and Mail's Globe 100: Best Books of 2014 There were plans for an official welcome. It was to take place the following Sunday. But those who came to the rectory on Father Pennant's second day were the ones who could not resist seeing him sooner. Here was the man to whom they would confess the darkest things. It was important to feel him out. Mrs. Young, for instance, after she had watched him eat a piece of her macaroni pie, quietly asked what he thought of adultery. André Alexis brings a modern sensibility and a new liveliness to an age-old genre, the pastoral. For his very first parish, Father Christopher Pennant is sent to the sleepy town of Barrow. With more sheep than people, it is sleepily bucolic - too much Barrow Brew on Barrow Day is the rowdiest it gets. But things aren't so idyllic for Liz Denny, whose fiancé doesn't want to choose between Liz and his more worldly lover Jane, or for Father Pennant himself, whose faith is profoundly shaken by the miracles he witnesses - a mayor walking on water, intelligent gypsy moths, and a talking sheep. ungekürzt. Rapping on the walls. Mysterious rains of stones. Furniture moving around by itself. Phantom voices. Unexplained fires. Invisible assaults. The symptoms of poltergeist activity are well known, but what is a poltergeist, really? Is it some type of demon, or an angry spirit whose only mission is to cause mischief and destruction? Is it the unconscious energy of a troubled living person, somehow affecting the environment from a distance? Or could it all be simply fraud or misidentification? In this comprehensive book, well over 100 cases of poltergeist activity, from the first century to the present day, are summarized and examined. All the best-known cases are presented, from Borley Rectory to the Bell Witch, from the Great Amherst Mystery to Gef the Talking Mongoose, from Rosenheim to Tina Resch, from Enfield to the Entity. A large selection of fascinating and lesser-known accounts from all over the world are also included, and all contain testimony of the most eerie and extraordinary events. In addition, the book contains in-depth discussions of distinct patterns, stages, and theorized causes of poltergeist phenomena, drawing from some of the best research in parapsychology, neuroscience, and quantum mechanics, as well as a skeptical perspective to provide a grounded overview. The Unseen Hand is the ultimate one-stop-shop for listeners interested in poltergeist disturbances throughout history and the theories behind what causes them. ungekürzt. Language: English. In At Home, Bill Bryson applies the same irrepressible curiosity, irresistible wit, stylish prose and masterful storytelling that made A Short History of Nearly Everything one of the most lauded books of the last decade, and delivers one of the most entertaining and illuminating books ever written about the history of the way we live. Bill Bryson was struck one day by the thought that we devote a lot more time to studying the battles and wars of history than to considering what history really consists of: centuries of people quietly going about their daily business – eating, sleeping and merely endeavouring to get more comfortable. And that most of the key discoveries for humankind can be found in the very fabric of the houses in which we live. This inspired him to start a journey around his own house, an old rectory in Norfolk, wandering from room to room considering how the ordinary things in life came to be. Along the way he did a prodigious amount of research on the history of anything and everything, from architecture to electricity, from food preservation to epidemics, from the spice trade to the Eiffel Tower, from crinolines to toilets; and on the brilliant, creative and often eccentric minds behind them. And he discovered that, although there may seem to be nothing as unremarkable as our domestic lives, there is a huge amount of history, interest and excitement – and even a little danger – lurking in the corners of every home. I’m Father Patrick O’Neil. Father Pat is what the local folks call me. I’ve been around, working inner cities, rural areas, Ireland, England, and some missionary work in China. All when I was training and just ordained. Now, I’m in a medium town and settled in for the last few years. The rectory is homely, and I’ve got a housekeeper. Moira is from the old country and in her late 50s, I should think. She is married and has been housekeeper here for many years. She keeps the place clean and tidy, cooks for me, and does my shopping, washing, and ironing. She is a great cook and always prepares meals for her days off so all I have to do is warm them up, usually in the microwave. Bit of a luxury these days. I’m 32 years old and have never been kissed! Not true. I’d had girlfriends when I was a teen and at college and had explored and enjoyed them and the experiences. But since being ordained, I had concentrated my thoughts away from such temptations; well, almost. I’ve been dragged off the straight and narrow a few times. Priests seem to attract many women. Maybe it’s that priests should be celibate and so a challenge for some women. I also keep pretty fit and have always done some boxing. The boxing priest has always been an attraction, although without my dog collar and in shorts, I'm just another bloke. Maybe my muscular frame is a bit of an attraction, too. ungekürzt. Seeking a new life away from bad circumstances in her native America, Scarlett Ward moves her daughters to England. Their new home, a run-down old rectory, is vandalized the first night in their new country. When Scarlett calls the police to report the crime, a handsome deputy constable appears. Archer Phipps is a well-known figure in North Yorkshire. Tall and handsome, he is immediately taken with the gorgeous American with the dark hair and red lips. A routine police report turns into something warm and curious, and Archer finds himself drawn to the luscious woman. He can also see that she is very guarded. Curiosity turns to concern, and concern to genuine interest. Archer and Scarlett began to fall for each other quickly with a fiery passion borne of lust and magnetic attraction. But something evil is lurking in the mist of the North Yorkshire moors. Ten years ago, when Archer was a new inspector, a series of murders were committed by an individual given the horrific nickname of the Yorkshire Cutter. His crimes were particularly brutal, leaving notes behind at the crime scenes that incorporated poems of great English poets into his twisted taunts. Now, as Archer and Scarlett draw closer, the Yorkshire Cutter rears his ugly head again. Archer finds himself once again embroiled in tracking down a killer that now has his sights set on Scarlett. Through life and death, love and loss, Archer and Scarlett face off against a killer in a tense climax with an unexpected twist. Part thriller, part mystery, and all love story, Darkling, I Listen is a true adventure in every sense of the word. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Brian J. Gill.
