Winner, 2017 APA Audie Awards - Fiction When two Union soldiers stumble onto a plantation in northern Georgia on a warm May day in 1864, the last thing they expect is to see the Union flag flying high - or to be greeted by a group of freed slaves and their Jewish mistress. Little do they know that this place has an unusual history. Twelve years prior, Adelaide Mannheim - daughter of Mordecai, the only Jewish planter in the county - was given her own maid, a young slave named Rachel. The two became friends, and soon they discovered a secret: Mordecai was Rachel's father, too. As the country moved toward war, Adelaide and Rachel struggled to navigate their newfound sisterhood - from love and resentment to betrayal and, ultimately, forgiveness. Now, facing these Union soldiers as General Sherman advances nearer, their bond is put to the ultimate test. Will the plantation be spared? Or will everything they've lived for be lost? ungekürzt. So Pretty a Problem , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 564min
Amateur sleuth Mordecai Tremaine is back in another classic mystery from the author of Murder for Christmas. Adrian Carthallow, enfant terrible of the art world, is no stranger to controversy. But this time it's not his paintings that have provoked a blaze of publicity - it's the fact that his career has been suddenly terminated by a bullet to the head. Not only that, but his wife has confessed to firing the fatal shot. Inspector Penross of the town constabulary is, however, less than convinced by Helen Carthallow's story - but has no other explanation for the incident that occurred when the couple were alone in their clifftop house. Luckily for the Inspector, amateur criminologist Mordecai Tremaine has an uncanny habit of being in the near neighbourhood whenever sudden death makes its appearance. Investigating the killing, Tremaine is quick to realise that however handsome a couple the Carthallows were, and however extravagant a life they led, beneath the surface there's a pretty devil's brew.... ungekürzt. The Holy Bible - Esther: King James Version, Hörbuch, Digital, 28min
While we do not know when the Book of Esther written, or who wrote it, the events that unfold in it suggest that it was written approximately 100 years after the exile of Jews from Jerusalem. In this Book, there is no mention of God, and it is believed that that is done because the author wanted to make God present and active through His work.Around 484 BC, King Ahasuerus ordered a 180-day celebration as a show of his wealth and power. On the last day of the celebration, he ordered his wife, Queen Vashti, to appear and demonstrate her beauty, but she refused. The king deposed her and began to look for a new queen from within his kingdom. Concealing her Jewish identity, Esther entered the contest. The king took to her immediately and she became the new queen around 478 BC.Mordecai, Esther’s cousin, overheard two of the king’s guards plotting to kill him. He informed Esther of this plan, who informed the king. Mordecai’s position was elevated within the royal court. King Ahasuerus appointed Haman to the highest position in Persia. Haman ordered everyone to kneel before him. Everyone did, except Mordecai.Haman was furious and convinced the king to have Mordecai and all the Jews exterminated. The King agreed and issued a decree. Mordecai and Esther planned to have the decree overturned but it was not possible. Esther organized a banquet for the king and informed him that she was Jewish and that Haman had plotted to have all the Jews murdered. The king then had Haman executed. The decree that he made earlier could not be reversed by law, so another had to be made for the Jews to defend themselves and exterminate their enemies. They triumphed. This text is a story of hope and God’s providence its essential message being that even if God seems to be missing, He is not. Mordecai helped save the king and his act came back to him as a reward from God, and all the Jewish people were saved. Language: English. Narrator: David McNeill. The Rathbones , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 854min
A gothic, literary adventure set in New England, Janice Clark's haunting debut chronicles 100 years of a once prosperous and now crumbling whaling family, told by its last surviving member. Mercy Rathbone, 15 years old, is the diminutive scion of the Rathbone clan. Her father, the last in the beleaguered dynasty, has been lost at sea for seven years - ever since the last whale was seen off the coast of Naiwayonk, Connecticut. Mercy's memories of her father grow dimmer each day, and she spends most of her time in the attic hideaway of her reclusive uncle Mordecai, who teaches her the secrets of Greek history and nautical navigation through his collection of specimens and moldering books. But when a strange, violent visitor turns up one night, Mercy and Mordecai are forced to flee the crumbling mansion and set sail on a journey that will bring them deep into the haunted history of the Rathbone family, and the reasons for its undoing. As Mercy and Mordecai sail from island to island off the Connecticut coast, encountering dangers and mysteries, friends and foes, they untangle the knots of the Rathbone story, discovering secrets long encased in memory. They learn the history of the family's founder and patriarch, Moses Rathbone, and the legendary empire he built of ships staffed with the sons of his many, many wives. Sons who stumbled in their father's shadow, distracted by the arrival of the Stark sisters, a trio of "golden" girls, whose mesmerizing beauty may have sparked the Rathbone's decline. From the depths of the sea to the lonely heights of the widow's walk; from the wisdom of the worn Rathbone wives to the mysterious origins of a sinking island, Mercy and Mordecai's journey will bring them to places they never thought possible. But will they piece together a possible future from the mistakes of the past, or is the once great family's fate doomed to match that of the whales themselves? I started the very long process of recording the Bible 3 years ago and by the summer of 2011, the entire Bible was finished. I pray with my whole heart that these readings will be a blessing and an inspiration to many. Language: English. Narrator: Christopher Glyn.
In 1816, Mordecai Lewis, a veteran of Andrew Jackson's Indian campaigns and battles against the British, moves his family into the Western Tennessee canebrakes. But Mordecai, a born wanderer, is not satisfied with farming, and with his sons, Michael and Andrew, and some other backwoodsmen, he leads a foray into Spanish-held Texas to hunt wild horses and return the mustang herd to sell in Tennessee. Five years later, after the Spanish government in Mexico City has agreed to permit 300 American families to settle in Texas, the Lewis brothers have their opportunity to reenter Texas. They ride to the frontier town of Natchitoches, Louisiana, where Michael falls in love with Marie Villaret, daughter of a wealthy French landowner, then cross the Sabine to find Stephen F.
