Incorruptible is the gripping new Istanbul crime thriller starring Inspector Ikmen, 'the Morse of Istanbul' (Daily Telegraph), from award-winning author Barbara Nadel. Not to be missed by fans of Donna Leon.In the backstreets of Istanbul, a young woman's body is found. Dumped in a dustbin and covered in cut flowers, she is the victim of a frenzied and vicious stabbing. Inspector Ikmen discovers that the woman was well known in Istanbul. Newspapers had been calling her the blessed woman; cured of cancer in a Christian miracle and a proclaimed messenger of the Virgin Mary. These controversial claims had made her fierce enemies in the predominantly Islamic community and she had unwittingly stirred up divisions amongst the Christians of the city. But as Ikmen digs further into the case he uncovers powerful hatred and dark secrets lurking within her family. And to find the truth he must delve into a toxic world of fear, concealment and lies. The question is: was this a killing in the name of faith or does the answer lie somewhere else? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Barrett. Our relationship with ourselves (are we happy about who we are), others, and life is holistic; if it gets out of kilter then we become discordant and uneasy and then a whole manner of silly things happen which makes matters even worse. It's important that we understand this because any relationship, if it is to be sound, must have some firm foundations because nothing in life lives in isolation - everything has a part in something else. How we perceive life, how we view life, how we create our own ideology of life makes a tremendous difference to our enjoyment and how we get on with others or, indeed, how others get on with us. Our friends and significant others are a reflection of who we are and if we/they aren't so good because of this then everything will be predominantly discordant or not so wholesome or never produce any degrees of lasting happiness. This is part one of two downloads on relationships and how we can make or break them. Language: English. Narrator: Mr John Stewart Rushton. This study examines the impact of the legalization of an indigenous model of municipal government known as usos y costumbres on the political system of Oaxaca, a predominantly rural state in southern Mexico. Since 1995, 418 of Oaxaca s 570 municipalities, accounting for 36% of the state s population, legally elect their municipal authorities through community assemblies, in which voting is open and public, and the suffrage is limited active participants in the social and political life of the community (typically, able-bodied adult males). Using elite interviews, census data and electoral data, this study examines how the legalization of usos y costumbres has affected citizenship, partisanship, and electoral behaviour in state and local politics in Oaxaca. As Oaxaca is the only Latin American polity that recognizes indigenous municipal autonomy, it provides useful insight into understanding the extent to which indigenous peoples' demands for greater local autonomy are compatible with democratization in the region. As such, this study may be useful to those interested in indigenous rights, citizenship, multiculturalism and democracy.

Musa Okwonga - a young Black man who grew up in a predominantly working-class town - was not your typical Eton College student. The experience moulded him, challenged him... but also made him wonder why a place that was so good for him also seems to contribute to the harm being done to the UK. The more he searched, the more evident the connection became between one of Britain's most prestigious institutions and the genesis of Brexit, and between his home town in the suburbs of Greater London and the rise of the far right.Woven throughout this deeply personal and unflinching memoir of Musa's five years at Eton in the 1990s is a present-day narrative which engages with much wider questions about pressing social and political issues: privilege, the distribution of wealth, the rise of the far right in the UK, systemic racism, the 'boys' club' of government and the power of the few to control the fate of the many. One of Them is both an intimate account and a timely exploration of race and class in modern Britain.

Mandalay, whose construction began in 1857 as the capital of Upper Burma north of the British colonial border, became home to King Mindon's splendid court two years later. With its lively urban economic-industrial trading and development activities, the city came to symbolise the revolt by the last Burmese Buddhist rulers against colonialism. The investigation of the little-researched city of Mandalay proved, like the onslaught of the apocalyptic horsemen bringing war and pestilence in their wake, to be ill-fated by the double star of the coronavirus pandemic and the military coup. The observations in this essay therefore focus predominantly on the city's early period, ultimately posing the question of whether royal Mandalay might serve as a guideline for understanding present-day politics in Myanmar. Mandalay: Bulwark against Colonialism follows on the heels of an account of Yangon (2017) and an approach to Naypyitaw (2018, 2019) - a trilogy spotlighting the three capitals on the territory of Myanmar as urban figures in which historical epochs of upheaval and the political-economic regimes of the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries played out.

The Book of Life presents Shelby Lee Adam's color photographs of four generations of the Appalachian people. Adams began photographing the inhabitations of the rural Appalachian mountain range in 1974, using black-and-white film and Polaroid materials. In time he also worked with color Kodachrome film, invariably returning to the Eastern Kentucky region where he was born. By 2010 Adams was photographing exclusively in digital color, and this book marks the first time he is sharing his color work. Adams has consistently focused on the valleys and homes of Kentucky families, relatives and neighbors in a predominantly seven-county region. He has often revisited individuals and families many times over decades, distributing his photos and books while creating new pictures. This personal approach has led to the creation of genuine and deep relationships between photographer and subject, in which the subject is often involved in unusually creative ways, verbalizing the emotions they would like to express during the shoot, and where and how they would like to be depicted.

This is the English translation of the German original 'Gratwanderung'. the story of my Moselle wine-making family. I try to tell German history - predominantly of the 19th and 20th century - by the example of one family in one village. Since the Moselle is a border region, there are a number of connections to other countries, namely France. Foreign readers may learn how and why the Nazi-ideology was able to gain support and to what sort of conflicts that lead, dividing whole families. Probably the most exciting part of the book is when I describe how my grandfather helped a shot down American airman and what consequenses that had for him. The story also allows deep insights into the rural life before WWI, when Germany was still a monarchy and one of my relatives was serving at the court of a local aristocrat. The personal stories are rounded up by some factual chapters, for example about the Roman heritage of the region, the fate of the small Jewish community, the role of the wine and some famous persons from the Moselle.

Part memoir and part social commentary, Amanda Kemp's short book provides insight and strategies for creating racial justice and a strong sense of shared community. Her voice is vulnerable and personal as she reflects on her own interracial relationship, parenting her black teenaged son, and making art in the age of Black Lives Matter. Her short essays leave you cheering and hopeful. Kemp's searing and tender commentary about herself, life within her interracial family, and racial justice take the listener on a rare journey into an African American boundary crosser. Kemp grew up in poverty in a predominantly black and Latino neighborhood but went on to graduate from Stanford University and earned a PhD from Northwestern University. Now married to her European American husband, Kemp watches the way that race plays out in her family, her work as a performing artist and professor, and in her spiritual journey. This intimate short collection of essays will leave you pondering deep questions long after you stop listening. A great conversation starter, this short book is a must-listen for people concerned with racial unity, making Black Lives Matter, and educators and youth development professionals. ungekürzt. Read by the author, this collection of poetry is for all the hearts that have done everything "right" but still end up in a gutter - all the people who are pissed off and unfulfilled, and who are able to laugh at themselves. No more lies. No more pretending. Whether we have lost our self-concept to our own broken childhoods, to parenthood, to careers, to marriages, to the wrong lovers - it is time for us to champion one another's truths, to embrace our worth, and to dispel toxic expectations of perfection.Borne out of the author's postpartum depression journey (and subsequent nervous breakdown) and sexual awakening in her 30s, Jordan's poems explore the interweaving of relationships, loss, healing, and self-worth. This collection follows the trajectory of self-exploration through relationships that have broken down and brought her closer to herself, prior to and in the aftermath of hospitalization - predominantly, the abandonment of Jordan's mother, a trauma which only manifested once her own baby was placed in her arms. Jordan's bicultural marriage and experiences as an immigrant in Great Britain further highlight the complexity of one modern woman's quest for personhood.  ungekürzt. Language: English.
