The Hardworking Woman's Guide to Money , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 246min
Financial advisor Kathleen Thomas has seen the difficulties and setbacks that occur when women don't own their financial lives. It's not a situation you want to find yourself in. The Hardworking Woman's Guide to Money provides all the information you need to make informed decisions about your own finances, whether you've just earned your first paycheck or retirement looms on the horizon. After outlining the seven habits common to successful, hardworking women, Thomas discusses many vital topics, including determining your net worth, understanding bank account fees, paying for college, securing a mortgage, and taking full advantage of your employee benefits. She also explains the ways different life stages dictate your financial needs, offers basic investment advice and estate-planning tips, and explores the need for prenuptial agreements. Thomas emphasizes that accruing wealth isn't an end in itself. Rather, financial security is a tool you use to achieve your goals and dreams, whether they include traveling the world, enjoying a stable retirement, or building a legacy for your children. Controlling your finances can be challenging, even frightening, but once you get a handle on money management, you will be able to plan your future with much greater confidence. ungekürzt. The Science of Sleep , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 49min
The Science of Sleep, by developmental molecular biologist Dr. John Medina, gives you the facts - and the prescription to sleep well - in his signature engaging style. Adapted from Medina's Brain Rules for Aging Well: 10 Principles for Staying Vital, Happy, and Sharp, in this chapter, you'll learn how the sleep cycle is born of a constant tension between hormones and brain regions vying to keep you awake and hormones and brain regions trying to make you go to sleep. This is called opponent-process theory. Sleep, scientists are finding, doesn't have as much to do with energy restoration as it does with processing memories and flushing out toxins in the brain. As you grow older, your sleep cycle becomes more fragmented, particularly the part of the cycle during which toxins are flushed out of the brain. Accruing good sleep habits by middle age (a stable sleep routine; no caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine six hours prior to going to sleep) is the best way to avoid sleep-related cognitive decline in old age. You may already be experiencing the sometimes unpleasant effects of the aging process. Or you may be deeply concerned about your loved ones who are. Either way, The Science of Sleep is for you. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Medina. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/pprs/000011/bk_pprs_000011_sample.mp3. The Fate of the West
When faced with global instability and economic uncertainty, it is tempting for states to react by closing borders, hoarding wealth and solidifying power. We have seen it at various times in Japan, France and Italy and now it is infecting all of Europe and America, as the vote for Brexit in the UK has vividly shown. This insularity, together with increased inequality of income and wealth threatens the future role of the West as a font of stability, prosperity and security. Part of the problem is that the principles of liberal democracy upon which the success of the West has been built have been suborned, with special interest groups such as bankers accruing too much power and too great a share of the economic cake.So how is this threat to be countered? States such as Sweden in the 1990s, California at different times or Britain under Thatcher all halted stagnation by clearing away the powers of interest groups and restoring their societies' ability to evolve. To survive, the West needs to be porous, open and flexible. From reinventing welfare systems to redefining the working age, from reimagining education to embracing automation, Emmott lays out the changes the West must make to revive itself in the moment and avoid a deathly rigid future.- Shop: buecher

The Making of the Modern Corporation (eBook, ePUB)
This book traces the origins of a financial institution, the modern corporation, in Genoa and reconstructs its diffusion in England, the Netherlands, and France. At its inception, the Casa di San Giorgio (1407-1805) was entrusted with managing the public debt in Genoa. Over time, it took on powers we now ascribe to banks and states, accruing financial characteristics and fiscal, political, and territorial powers. As one of the earliest central banks, it ruled territories and local populations for almost a century. It controlled strategic Genoese possessions near and far, including the island of Corsica, the city of Famagusta (in Cyprus), and trading posts in Crimea, the Black Sea, the Lunigiana in northern Tuscany, and various towns in Liguria. In the early sixteenth century, in his Florentine Histories (Book VIII, Chapter 29), Niccolò Machiavelli was the first to analyze the relationship between the Casa di San Giorgio's financial and territorial powers, declaring its possession of territories as the basis of its ascendancy. Later, the founders of some of the earliest corporations, including the Dutch East India Company (1602), the Bank of England (1694), and John Law's Mississippi Company (1720) in France, referenced the model of the Casa di San Giorgio.- Shop: buecher

Design Based on the Laws of Nature, Hörbuch, Digital, 54min
William McDonough is committed to helping humankind remake how we make things so as to not pollute the environment and therefore ourselves. He’s convinced that we can live a healthy and sustainable life on the planet if we start asking ourselves the right questions. In this interview, McDonough speaks about how we need to look closely at nature, where nothing is thrown away. He explains the idea of “Cradle to Cradle”, and how humans can become tools of the natural world once more. He explores the difference between a consumer and a customer, explains what is meant by accruing a “materials bank”, and proposes how we can turn sewage treatment plants into nutrient management plants. William McDonough is an anticipatory design architect. But more than that he is a philosopher for the 21st century, and is asking some of the most critical questions we should be thinking about in these challenging times. He’s the former Dean of the Architecture Department at the University of Virginia, and was named “Hero of the Planet” by Time magazine. He’s also the winner of three U.S. presidential awards including the Presidential Award for Sustainable Development. He is the author with his partner, Michael Braungart, of the book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things (Farrar, Straus and Geroux 2002). Language: English. Narrator: Justine Willis Toms.
