Haunted Dreams
Some say to perform "true country music" you need to have something special in your bones. In Cody Lawson's life, that's all he's ever known. Cody was raised in the small rural town of Weimar, Texas. "It was a fun place to grow up," remarks Cody, "it's in the middle of nowhere on Interstate 10, but halfway to everywhere. If you blink while driving you literally would miss our one gas station. It was great." When not fishing, hunting, riding horses, or playing sports, Cody spent his summers with his Grandpa working the family farm & ranch in deep east Texas. It was those hot, sweltering summers of baling hay, fixing tractors, and working cows that laid the foundation for his "old school" work ethic. "My Grandpa played a pretty big part of shaping me into the person I am today. He taught me the value of a hard days work, and that you should always put God and your family first. I can still hear us singing along to his old George Jones cassettes while trolling through the hay fields in his truck." After several years of membership with the local 4-H and FFA organizations showing cattle, along with his love of football, Cody left home to pursue his dream of playing quarterback at the collegiate level, attending Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. While at Howard Payne, Cody was a four year letterman on the Yellow Jacket football team and earned a bachelor's degree in Exercise Sport Science in 2007. It was during his time spent in Brownwood that Cody began songwriting. "College football was a great experience and always kept me extremely busy, but for some reason, whenever I had any free time, I always found myself with my guitar, a pen, and piece of paper. I had taught myself to play guitar while in high school and always wanted to join a band but my college schedule never allowed me enough time. I told myself that as soon I graduated I was going to move somewhere so that I could play music as much as possible." That's exactly what Cody did. After graduating he moved to San Marcos, Texas, which is just a stone's throw from Austin, the "Live Music Capital of the World". It didn't take long after attending several songwriter nights at the historic Cheatham Street Warehouse and other local venues, that Cody networked with other musicians sharing his same passion. After a year of cutting his teeth on what it takes to write songs, sing, and lead a band, Cody finally hooked up with producer Keith Davis. In the summer of 2009, Cody and Keith Davis began working on Cody's debut album Haunted Dreams (released summer 2010). The entire album was recorded at "The Zone" Recording Studio in Dripping Springs, Texas, which is just west of Austin. In addition to Davis's guitar tracks on the record, some notable Texas artists were involved with the project: including renown producer Lloyd Maines on pedal steel guitar, Nick Worley on fiddle, and Paul Eason on harmony vocals, among with many other very talented musicians. "I believe this record has a little something for everyone who loves traditional country. It has songs about falling in love, falling out of love, making love, good times, bad times, and chasing your dreams. In the end I think that's what life is really all about, and the people we encounter and experience it with along the way." Cody Lawson is passionate about reviving the roots of what made him fall in love with country music in the first place. "Some people think that traditional country music is a lost art, but I think that the passion and message behind country music is still out there and I'm hoping to bring that back to the forefront. I truly believe that there are still honest, hardworking people out there who appreciate music that connects with everyday life. I want to give those people both a way to relate to my music and an opportunity to escape and just enjoy this crazy ride we call life."- Shop: odax
