A superstitious man might just have balked at putting to sea on Friday 13th in the centenary year of the sinking of the Titanic.... Fatal Voyage is the first comprehensive account of the wrecking of the Costa Concordia - an enthralling narrative of events before, during, and after the 114,000-ton liner slammed into rocks off the Mediterranean island of Giglio. Focusing on the experiences of a Californian family, Fatal Voyage brings to life the terrifying reality of being trapped aboard the listing, crippled Costa Concordia. And it shows that some of the issues raised by the Titanic disaster are as relevant today as they were 100 years ago. John Hooper is the Rome-based correspondent of The Economist and The Guardian. He has been reporting from the countries of the Mediterranean for almost 25 years. His book The Spaniards won the Allen Lane Award for a best first work of nonfiction. It has since been revised and updated as The New Spaniards. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Barrett. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/015935/bk_adbl_015935_sample.mp3. Gretchen Williams had finally been offered her dream job. After years of writing - screenplays, various freelance jobs, and erotic spanking romance - one of her book series had been adapted for television. She had been over the moon at the invitation to join the crew on set and overlook day to day operations. Of course she never expected to wind up as the whipping girl. The main actress balked at the idea of a hand coming anywhere near her perfect round behind, and after some deliberations Gretchen offers up her derriere for showbiz. She never dreamed her bottom would be on display for everyone to see, but the bigger problem is the sudden attention from the male lead actor. Tristan Callahan knew exactly what he was signing up for when he accepted the contract for a one year term, tentative for a second season at best. The subject matter appealed to him for a variety of reasons, ones he kept to himself. Until Gretchen throws a temper tantrum like a true diva. He takes her in hand, right in her own trailer, proving that he's been doing very little acting so far. They embark into a secret D/s relationship. When photos of them together at a local BDSM dungeon surface and leak to the media, they find themselves with tough choices to make. Will their relationship overcome the scandal or is Gretchen doomed to say goodbye to Tristan in true Hollywood fashion? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Augustine Poe. The last time Brantley Kincaid had an argument with someone, he was 18 years old - and he regrets it like he will never regret anything again. If only he had not balked at going to pick up his grandfather that day, his mother would not have driven into the path of a truck, and there would be two fewer graves in Merritt Cemetery. Though a frequent visitor, he hasn't lived in Merritt since burying his mother and grandfather. But now he's coming back, and it might not be so easy to hide behind his wit and charisma. Outwardly, interior designer Lucy Mead is a beautiful, confident professional. Inside, she's the friendless, overweight girl who spent her life following her archeologist parents all over the globe. And who could forget those teenage years of turmoil and unrequited love? It would have been kinder if Brantley had not known she was alive rather than treating her like Robin to his Batman. She carries the humiliation to this day. Their friends and Brantley's family are delighted when he sets his sights on Lucy, though Lucy isn't so sure. She cannot deny the attraction, but something is wrong. Does he really love her, or does he see her as a refuge and another way to run from his grief? If she can't find answers, what could be a simple, sweet life might go completely south. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Amy Rubinate. The high-stepping mare balked, tossing a proud but weary head, and whinnied a protest as the dust-covered gambler stood high in his stirrups and surveyed the forbidding terrain in front of him. A hundred miles.... Maybe more, he thought. A burned and blasted desert...filled with hostiles, and no water but what he carried in the two canteens slung over his saddle horn. A wide-open inside straight if ever there was one, he cursed angrily, knowing there was no choice but to draw to it despite the odds. Not more than an hour behind him were nine, maybe 10, hired guns. The gambler gritted his teeth and roweled the lathered flanks of the mare. She reared at this latest outrage, plunged, and then resigned herself to the rider's choice. Gingerly, hesitantly, she stepped out onto the rocky, splintered surface. Wes Farley knew the mare was trying to warn him that death waited for both of them out there under that blistering sun. If Wes prided himself on being a gentleman, despite his disheveled finery, he was also aware that the mare considered herself a lady, and not used to the treatment she'd received over the past few days. She was a creature that thrived on pampering and was bred for speed and beauty. Wes suppressed with difficulty a natural feeling of guilt for pushing her so hard. While nothing might catch her over the short haul, almost anything on four legs could outdistance her in time...and that was a commodity Wes Farley was critically short of. A week now they had been dogging him...ever since Central City and the game.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Edward Easton. These 12 half-hour lectures are about what Einstein got wrong. He may have kindled a scientific revolution with his famous theory of relativity and his proof that atoms and light quanta exist, but he balked at accepting the most startling implications of these theories - such as the existence of black holes, the big bang, gravity waves, and mind-bendingly strange phenomena in the quantum realm. In a course that assumes no background in science and uses very little math, research physicist Dan Hooper of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the University of Chicago focuses on Einstein's personal qualities that made him a heavy hitter with relativity but also a strikeout king in many of his other ideas. You start with two lectures on Einstein's special and general theories of relativity, and in a later lecture you cover his founding role in quantum theory. All are titanic achievements. The balance of the course deals with his false starts, blind alleys, and outright blunders, which are fascinating for what they reveal about the give-and-take conduct of science. For example, the possibility of black holes, which are infinitely dense concentrations of matter, emerged from the equations of general relativity. However, the idea seemed so absurd to Einstein that he believed something in nature must prevent black holes from forming. He was wrong. Similar considerations led him to doubt the existence of gravity waves, insist that the universe must be static and eternal, and hold out for a deterministic theory that would solve the weird paradoxes of quantum mechanics. Again, he was wrong. Dr. Hooper closes with a lecture on the missteps of other great physicists - Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei, and Isaac Newton - proving that Einstein is in good company. Even geniuses struggle to find the truth. A backstage look at the making of Nora Ephron's revered trilogy - When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail, and Sleepless in Seattle - which brought romantic comedies back to the fore, and an intimate portrait of the beloved writer/director who inspired a generation of Hollywood women, from Mindy Kaling to Lena Dunham. In I'll Have What She's Having, entertainment journalist Erin Carlson tells the story of the real Nora Ephron and how she reinvented the romcom through her trio of instant classics. With a cast of famous faces including Reiner, Hanks, Ryan, and Crystal, Carlson takes listeners on a rollicking, revelatory trip to Ephron's New York City, where reality took a backseat to romance and Ephron - who always knew what she wanted and how she wanted it - ruled the set with an attention to detail that made her actors feel safe but sometimes exasperated crew members. Along the way Carlson examines how Ephron explored in the cinema answers to the questions that plagued her own romantic life and how she regained faith in love after one broken engagement and two failed marriages. Carlson also explores countless other questions Ephron's fans have wondered about: What sparked Reiner to snap out of his bachelor blues during the making of When Harry Met Sally? Why was Ryan, a gifted comedian trapped in the body of a fairy-tale princess, not the first choice for the role? After she and Hanks each separately balked at playing Mail's Kathleen Kelly and Sleepless' Sam Baldwin, what changed their minds? And perhaps most importantly: What was Dave Chappelle doing...in a turtleneck? An intimate portrait of one of America's most iconic filmmakers and a look behind the scenes of her crowning achievements, I'll Have What She's Having is a vivid account of the days and nights when Ephron, along with assorted cynical collaborators, learned to show her heart o ungekürzt.
