Outlier is the first release from the Outlier B3 organ quartet based in Kentucky and in residency at Morehead State University. This recording features improvisational explorations on original compositions and performances by Glenn Ginn, Steven Snyder and Gordon Towell. The Hammond B 3 organ, played by Steven Snyder, is the inspiration and central focus for this project. Outlier also features the fine performance of Jason Tiemann on drums. This artistic endeavor was made possible through a Research and Creative productions grant from Morehead State University. Steven Snyder is originally from Pittsburgh, PA where he began his study of jazz piano with Frank Cunnimondo. He has graduated from the University of North Texas with Bachelors and Masters degrees after playing in the One o'clock Lab Band. He also holds a DMA in Piano Performance from the University of Texas at Austin. He has performed in France, Brazil, Portugal, Sweden, Finland, Taiwan and the United States. His work has included playing with Randy Brecker, Jerry Bergonzi, Gustavo Bergali, Brannen Temple and Blaze, and Odd Man Out as well as appearing with his own trio. Gordon Towell originally comes from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He holds a B. Ed in music education from the University of Alberta, an MM in jazz studies from Indiana University and a DME with a cognate in jazz studies from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Gordon has performed with many national and international artists, and has conducted throughout Canada and the U.S. He was the recipient of the 2001 Morehead State University's Distinguished Creative Productions Award. A graduate of the world famous jazz studies program at the University of North Texas (MM '96,) Glenn Ginn has been a featured soloist along side several jazz greats including Clark Terry, Gene Harris, Gene Bertoncini, and drummer Steve Smith. His guitar work can be heard on his two self produced CD's, Swing Street, which features Glenn's original arrangements of several jazz standards, and the 2005 release Guitar Duets, a collection of original compositions arranged for two guitars. Glenn also has recorded as a sideman on several other releases. Jason Tiemann is one of the finest jazz musicians in the Midwest. He is constantly in demand and has performed with many of the great names in jazz. Salute is a ¾ minor blues that reflects the heritage of the B3 trio plus saxophone. It is a salute to such great groups and musicians such as the Three Sounds with Stanley Turrentine, Jimmy Smith, and Jack McDuff. Gurgle Rasp was written as a way to work on some right hand/left hand independence issues for organ playing. The vamping syncopated bass line, combined with the irregularly syncopated melody presents challenges during both the melody and the improvisation. Long stretches of open harmony allow for creative interpretation and color. Outlier was written specifically for this recording project. The A section chord progression was taken from the bridge of an unfinished tune begun several years ago. The progression is stretched into 5 bar phrases giving it a floating, asymmetrical vibe. The modal funk of the B section serves as a contrast and reprieve from the challenging harmony and asymmetry of the A section. The Malcolm Gladwell book "Outliers" inspired the title. Hall Of Fame consists of two open vamps connected by a set middle section. The harmony is predominantly minor 7th chords. The first vamp, consisting of two minor 7th chords a half step apart presents an unusual challenge for soloing. The second vamp is a simple turnaround in Cm. This tune was written in Spring of '09 for an MSU Faculty Jazz performance at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club in Cincinnati, OH. The title commemorates my experience of being a 2009 inductee into the Performing Arts Hall of Fame at my alma mater, New Richmond High School, in New Richmond, OH. Lost is Found is a gentle melodic bossa nova written to celebrate finding something very important to your life that was once lost and suddenly resurfaces many years later. Buffalo Alice began as a vamp for practicing phrasing in 5/4. Melody and bridge were added later. The soli passage was added much later when I arranged the tune for guitar ensemble. I recorded a version of this tune for my "Guitar Duets" disc. A lonely exit sign off of Interstate 94 in North Dakota inspired the title. Morehead State art professor Gary Mesa-Gaido did the artwork for the CD.
