    Fred Wesley wurde 1943 in Georgia geboren und wuchs in Alabama auf. Er begann seine Karriere als Posaunist bei Ike und Tina Turner. Später wurde er musikalischer Leiter, Arrangeur, Posaunist und Hauptkomponist von James Brown (1968-1975). Später spielte er bei Parliament-Funkadelic und Bootsy´s Rubber Band. Mit James Brown war Fred Wesley sein berühmtester Partner in der Welt, der die gewundenen Grooves orchestrierte und zu den kühnen, den Funk definierenden Soli beitrug. Indem er sich mit George Clinton und Bootsy Collins zusammentat, spielte er eine Schlüsselrolle im Funk. Fred Wesley spielte die Hauptrolle in dem Dokumentarfilm Soul Power und in dem Oscar-prämierten Film When We Were Kings. Er hat an zahlreichen Dokumentarfilmen über James Brown und die Funkmusik mitgewirkt. Autor des gefeierten Buches Hit Me, Fred: Recollections of a Sideman (Duke University Press 2002), einer Autobiographie. Wesley ist einer der Musiker, die an vielen musikalischen Projekten mitgearbeitet haben. Er hat mit Janet Jackson (That´s The Way Love Goes) und Nas (Nastradamus) zusammengearbeitet. Heute spielt er mit seiner eigenen Jazz-Funk-Band und nimmt sie auf. Er gibt sein musikalisches Wissen an junge Musiker und Musikstudenten in Bildungseinrichtungen auf der ganzen Welt weiter.
