Have you ever been around someone who seemed to be a lively storyteller? The person’s stories always seem to be embellished and colorful. When questioned about things, the person doesn’t seem to have a grasp on the information they are supplying to you. You cannot always tell whether the person is telling the truth or lying, and the person usually seems like they cannot tell the difference between their lies and reality either. Or do other people accuse you of telling stories? Do you find that your brain fills in the gaps? Do other people challenge the information you just gave them? Do you have memories of things that didn’t really happen, or do you think that you were somewhere that others say you never were? Do you have a tendency to have biases? Or do you provide disinformation and misinformation to others without really thinking about it? Most people hate lying, but they also don’t realize there is another form of lying: honest lying. Honest liars, when confronted, may have no idea what they said is a lie. They typically believe their own lies. They cannot tell the difference between a lie and the information their brain made up to fill in the gaps. When you confront an honest liar, they have no idea why you are angry with them. They will insist that what they are saying is real and is true. They may become confused, frustrated and violent if you keep insisting that what they are saying is false. One of the most extreme examples of confabulation is a study where people with split brain are shown photos which make them laugh. Because the side of the brain that gives us explanations for our own behaviors is severed from the side that laughed at the visual images, the brain fills in the gaps with its own reasons for laughing. The patient might instead say ‘I laughed because you’re funny’ to the doctor, completely unaware that the photos struck his funny bone. There are diseases, injuries and disorders of the brain that cause confabul ungekürzt. Twelve American tourists join an art expedition that begins in the Himalayan foothills of China - dubbed the true Shangri-La - and heads south into the jungles of Burma. But after the mysterious death of their tour leader, the carefully laid plans fall apart, and disharmony breaks out among the pleasure-seekers as they come to discover that the Burma Road is paved with less-than-honorable intentions, questionable food, and tribal curses. Then, on Christmas morning, eleven of the travelers boat across a misty lake for a sunrise cruise - and disappear. Drawing from the current political reality in Burma and woven with pure confabulation, Amy Tan's picaresque novel poses the question: How can we discern what is real and what is fiction, in everything we see? How do we know what to believe? Saving Fish from Drowning finds sly truth in the absurd: a reality TV show called Darwin's Fittest, a repressive regime known as SLORC, two cheroot-smoking twin children hailed as divinities, and a ragtag tribe hiding in the jungle - where the sprites of disaster known as Nats lurk, as do the specters of the fabled Younger White Brother and a British illusionist who was not who he was worshipped to be. With her signature "idiosyncratic, sympathetic characters, haunting images, historical complexity, significant contemporary themes, and suspenseful mystery" (Los Angeles Times), Amy Tan spins a provocative and mesmerizing tale about the mind and the heart of the individual, the actions we choose, the moral questions we might ask ourselves, and above all, the deeply personal answers we seek when happy endings are seemingly impossible. ungekürzt.
