To Kill a Fire , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 89min
The Blackhawk region of Colorado has always been home of a certain air of tragic strangeness...this is one tale of many. In the early 20th century, a fire threatened to consume the entire American West. One man, a dedicated member of the much-derided Rangers, set himself against it. As the blaze devoured the proud timber of the Rocky Mountains, something else was devouring the humanity of the men and women in its path.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rob Lilly. Rogue Warrior: Dictator's Ransom , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 671min
Was Kim Jong-il really a fanatical fan of Dick Marcinko, the Rogue Warrior? Had the terrifying tyrant actually read every one of Marcinko's many New York Times best sellers? One thing is certain: The Rogue Warrior wants nothing to do with the brutal despot. When, in Dictator's Ransom, the "loathsome dwarf" - as George W. Bush derided him - invites Marcinko to the Hermit Kingdom, the Rogue Warrior instantly declines...prompting the CIA to RSVP on his behalf. Marcinko is to track down four covert nuclear warheads secreted in the Supreme Leader's palace. More than just a thriller, Dictator's Ransom is a novel of electrifying energy and wicked wit. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Peter Ganim. Freedom from Bosses Forever , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 277min
Freedom from Bosses Forever is a book every lover of satire will enjoy, even if they are not interested in starting and running their own business. It has been described as unique by many reviewers and critics because the characters that appear in it are fictional apart from the much derided Tony Robinson OBE. 'Snorting with laughter' is not an unusual listener reaction. The fictional fashionista, and narrator of the story, Leonora Soculitherz (So-cool-it-hurts) takes the listener on a journey of discovery. Soculitherz investigates a government and big business conspiracy whilst unearthing, along the way, the bare essentials of 'own business' success. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Unit , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 526min
When Dorrit Wegner turned fifty, the government transferred her to a state-of-the-art facility where she can live out her days in comfort. Her apartment is furnished to her tastes, her meals expertly served, and all at the very reasonable non-negotiable price of one cardiopulmonary system. Once an outsider without family, derided by a society bent on productivity, Dorrit finds within The Unit the company of kindred spirits and a dignity conferred by 'use' in medical tests. But when Dorrit also finds love, her peaceful submission is blown apart and she must fight to escape before her 'final donation'. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Suzanne Toren. Lincoln's Body: A Cultural History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 761min
Nineteenth-century African Americans felt deep affection for their "liberator" as a "homely" man who did not hold himself apart; Southerners felt a nostalgia for Abraham Lincoln as a humble "conciliator". Later, educators glorified Lincoln as a symbol of nationhood to help assimilate poor immigrants. Monument makers focused not only on a gigantic body but also on a nationalist "union", downplaying "emancipation". Among both Black and White liberals in the 1960s and 1970s, Lincoln was derided or fell out of fashion. Recently, Lincoln has been embodied once again (as idealist and pragmatist) by outstanding historians, by self-identified Lincolnian president Barack Obama, and by actor Daniel Day-Lewis - all keeping Lincoln alive in a body of memory that speaks volumes about our nation. ungekürzt. Dance of the Photons: From Einstein to Quantum Teleportation , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 517min
Einstein's steadfast refusal to accept certain aspects of quantum theory was rooted in his insistence that physics has to be about reality. Accordingly, he once derided as spooky action at a distance the notion that two elementary particles far removed from each other could nonetheless influence each others properties - a hypothetical phenomenon his fellow theorist Erwin Schrodinger termed quantum entanglement. In a series of ingenious experiments conducted in various locations - from a dank sewage tunnel under the Danube River to the balmy air between a pair of mountain peaks in the Canary Islands - the author and his colleagues have demonstrated the reality of such entanglement using photons, or light quanta, created by laser beams. In principle, the lessons learned may be applicable in other areas, including the eventual development of quantum computers. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: L. J. Ganser. Necronomicon
In the past 31 years, there has been a lot of ink-actual and virtual-spilled on the subject of the Necronomicon. Some have derided it as a clumsy hoax; others have praised it as a powerful grimoire. As the decades have passed, more information has come to light both on the book's origins and discovery, and on the information contained within its pages. The Necronomicon has been found to contain formula for spiritual trans-formation, consistent with some of the most ancient mystical processes in the world, processes that were not public knowledge when the book was first published, processes that involve communion with the stars. In spite of all the controversy, the first edition sold out before it was published. And it has never been out of print since then. This year, the original designer of the 1977 edition and the original editor have joined forces to present a new, deluxe hardcover edition of the most feared, most reviled, and most desired occult book on the planet.- Shop: buecher

Feeding the People in Wartime Britain (eBook, ePUB)
While the history of food on the home front in wartime Britain has mostly focused on rationing, this book reveals the importance and scale of nation-wide communal dining schemes during this era. Welcomed by some as a symbol of a progressive future in which 'wasteful' home dining would disappear, and derided by others for threatening the social order, these sites of food and eating attracted great political and cultural debate. Using extensive primary source material, Feeding the People in Wartime Britain examines the cuisine served in these communal restaurants and the people who used them. It challenges the notion that communal eating played a marginal role in wartime food policy and reveals the impact they had in advancing nutritional understanding and new food technologies. Comparing them to similar ventures in mainland Europe and understanding the role of propaganda from the Ministry of Food in their success, Evans unearths this neglected history of emergency public feeding and relates it to contemporary debates around food policy in times of crisis.- Shop: buecher
