While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their images with sheer, almost irrational force, I've found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition. Considered one of the greatest short story writers of all time, Anton Chekhov heavily influenced the evolution of the modern short story. Most notably, he used a technique that would later be called "stream of consciousness", in which he eschewed the traditional story structure and simply wrote as though he was thinking aloud. Written in that same vein, "The Lottery Ticket" is a story about money, luck, and relationships. At the end of the nineteenth century, the United States emerged as an economic colossus in command of a new empire. Yet for the next 40 years the United States eschewed the kind of aggressive grand strategy that had marked other rising imperial powers in favor of a policy of moderation. In Power and Restraint, Jeffrey W. Meiser explores why the United States - counter to widely accepted wisdom in international relations theory - chose the course it did. Using 34 carefully researched historical cases, Meiser asserts that domestic political institutions and culture played a decisive role in preventing the mobilization of resources necessary to implement an expansionist grand strategy. These factors included traditional congressional opposition to executive branch ambitions, voter resistance to European-style imperialism, and the personal antipathy to expansionism felt by presidents like Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt. The web of resilient and redundant political restraints halted or limited expansionist ambitions and shaped the United States into an historical anomaly, a rising great power characterized by prudence and limited international ambitions. ungekürzt. Ralph Richardson was a contradictory genius who remains a legendary power and presence. He dominated stage and screen for over 50 years. Richardson eschewed most of the romantic heroes that made his two friends, Olivier and Gielgud, famous; he was the only one of the three thought capable of playing the ordinary man. In his search for the man behind the actor's make-up, the author has talked to Ralph Richardson's friends and colleagues. From their memories and Richardson's own words, John Miller has woven a portrait that shows Richardson in all his complexity and reveals the inner drive which took him, against the odds, to the heights of public and critical acclaim. John Miller also disentangles the real from the apocryphal stories of the eccentricity that contributed to the Richardson legend, discovering most to be true and finding new ones. Sir Ralph believed in keeping the secrets of his art from the public, but those secrets he did show to his fellow players are now told in this biography. Language: English. Narrator: Martin Jarvis. This fascinating book tells the story of the Soviet space dogs, illustrated with legendary photographer Martin Parr's vintage space-dog memorabilia. In the 1950s the space race between the USA and the USSR was well and truly on, and was for both a matter of pride and propaganda. But before man ventured into the cosmos, his four-legged friends would pave the way for space exploration. The first canine cosmonaut was Laika, meaning 'barker'. The little stray could never have anticipated that she would one day float 200 miles above the Moscow streets. She would be canonized as a proletarian hero, appearing on stamps, postcards and souvenirs. Her successors were Belka and Strelka, the first dogs to successfully return safely to Earth, and with them, the cult of the space dog was born.In a regime that eschewed celebrating individual achievement, the space dogs became Soviet superstars, with a vast array of merchandise, books and films in their honor.A must read for fans of Soviet Space Dogs by Olesya Turkina and Designed in the USSR: 1950-1989 by Moscow Design Museum.
