Stacy Aumonier was described by John Galsworthy as "one of the best short-story writers of all time". Odd Fish gives a keen insight into why the Nobel Prize winner believed Aumonier would outlive the writers of his day. In this collection of sketches of London Characters, Aumonier amply exhibits his genius for characterisation, his keen wit and his ruthless ascerbity. From reluctant fishmongers to opulent ballad singers with a shameful secret, drunks and scoundrals to eccentrics and geniuses, Aumonier sketches his characters from life and portays them as real, credible, rounded individuals, gradually unmasking them as though peeling the layers from an onion. For Don Pericle, wedding organizing is a calling, not just a career. Deep in the Sicilian countryside, between rose gardens and trellised balconies, up marble staircases and across damasked ballrooms, these charming stories unfold: stories of star-crossed love, of comedic misunderstandings and of deep friendships, of love triumphing in the face of adversity (pomegranate-stained dresses, overzealous photographers, missing string quartets, and even a case of sabotage!). To these brides and grooms-to-be, Don Pericle becomes a guru, a mentor, even a friend, solving problems, untangling knots, rearranging menus, and transforming lives. In “The Princess and the Pea”, Natalia wants a fairy-tale wedding, whatever the cost: But what does that mean for the rest of her life with Marco? Sophia and Isaias’ families, in “Be Our Guest”, have decided to boycott the wedding. How will they figure out a way to fill out the guest list? Meanwhile, in “Daniela’s Big Day”, the bride’s older sister is dreading the bouquet toss. Can Don Pericle find a way to ease her worries? Fishmongers and Ferrari drivers, dressmakers and divorcees, gardeners and grandmothers: Within the walls of Villa Lingualarga, all are offered a new chance at understanding each other - and maybe even finding true love. “A super read, and we all enjoyed the quirky, insightful style of storytelling.” (The People's Friend editorial team)"What a lovely story - so sweet and funny. Don Pericle is such an interesting character - we all need someone like that in our lives!" (Ewan Smith, author of pocket novels, short stories, and poems) ungekürzt. Language: English. Usman Khan was convicted of terrorism-related offenses at age 20, and sent to high-security prison. He was released eight years later, and allowed to travel to London for one day, to attend an event marking the fifth anniversary of a prison education programme he participated in. On November 29, 2019, he sat with others at Fishmongers' Hall, some of whom he knew. Then he went to the restroom to retrieve the things he had hidden there: a fake bomb vest and two knives, which he taped to his wrists. That day, he killed two people: Saskia Jones and Jack Merritt.Preti Taneja taught fiction writing in prison for three years. Merritt oversaw her program; Khan was one of her students. 'It is the immediate aftermath,' Taneja writes. '"I am living at the centre of a wound still fresh." The I is not only mine. It belongs to many.' In this searching lament by the award-winning author of We That Are Young, Taneja interrogates the language of terror, trauma and grief; the fictions we believe and the voices we exclude. Contending with the pain of unspeakable loss set against public tragedy, she draws on history, memory, and powerful poetic predecessors to reckon with the systemic nature of atrocity. Blurring genre and form, Aftermath is a profound attempt to regain trust after violence and to recapture a politics of hope through a determined dream of abolition.

Soul of a People is about a handful of people who joined the Federal Writer's Project in the 1930s and offers a glimpse of America at a turning point. This particular handful of characters went from poverty to great things later, and included John Cheever, Ralph Ellison, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, Margaret Walker, Jim Thomspon, Anzia Yezierska, Vardis Fisher, Kenneth Rexroth, Meridel Le Sueur, and Studs Terkel. In the 1930s, they were all caught up in an effort to describe America in a series of guidebooks and life histories. Through a narrative of striking images and firsthand accounts, the book reveals their experiences and the most vivid excerpts from their work on selected guides and interviews: Harlem schoolchildren, truckers, Chicago fishmongers, a Florida midwife, Nebraskan meatpackers, and blind musicians.  After the 1929 Crash, companies fired an average of 20,000 workers every day; in some cities over half the adult population was unemployed. The story of people rescued from joblessness by the Writers' Project is the compelling drama of people caught when an economy suddenly crashes as it is the fascinating account of some of America's best writers, unknowns turned loose on the landscape. Drawing on discoveries from personal collections, archives, recordings, and recent biographies, a new picture has emerged of how these individual dramas intersected with the larger picture of American life. This book illuminates what it felt like to live that experience, how going from joblessness to reporting on their own communities affected artists with varied visions, and the emotions that involved: shame, humiliation, anger, excitement, nostalgia, and adventure. The WPA writers and artists anticipated, and perhaps paved the way for, political and cultural movements of later decades including the Civil Rights movement, the Women's Right movement, and the Native American rights movement.  Soul of a People is also a Smiths ungekürzt.
