CHAPTER 1 NATURE AND SCOPE OF ISLAMIC REVIVAL 1.1 Introduction The Muslim community has experienced periods of revival and renewal from the beginning of the Islamic era. Islamic revival is one of the most important and such a defensives social political and religious trends. The process of renewal mutated to develop a new strand, which claimed that revelation has the right to control all human experiences and that state power must be sought to achieve this end. A revival in Islamic fundamentalism has always been associated with strong political repercussions.1 On the other hand, the renewal of the Islamic thought is an issue that has attracted a lot of attention, on more than one level, from a great many Islamic thoughts scholars and researchers, which gives a strong indication of the intellectual vitality of pro-Islamic world reform scholars, theologians, and intellectuals.2 The west has used different labels to describe this phenomenon: Islamic fundamentalism, Islamic Resurgence, Islamic Revival, militant Islam, neo normative Islam, and so on, corresponding not to a reality that reflects the spirit and nature of Islamic Movements. The well-liked and scholarly publications on Islam that appeared in the west in recent years not only indicate the role of Islam in the political process and an strong response to the visible regeneration of Islamic impulse in the Muslim world today but reflect the western cognizance of the importance of the Muslim world to their own political and economic interests.3 Islamic revival means "Islamic awakening," the term Islamic fundamentalism or Islamic resurgence refers to the pure teachings and fundamentals of the Islamic religion. The Arabic terms Ihya (revival) and Tajdid (renewal) are often used concurrently, but renewal is more akin to Islah (reform) than a revival, which is more concerned with the reawakening of certain Islamic practices. Revival and renewal are also used in the context of modern Islamic movements, but they also have important premodern roots.
