Sommer 1918: Mit den Augen eines zehnjährigen Mädchens erleben wir, wie der Krieg zu Ende geht Wie in »Kind aller Länder« geht es in Irmgard Keuns erstem Exilroman, der 1936 erschien, um ein junges Mädchen mit eigenem Kopf, verrückten Ideen und einer Menge Problemen. Das größte davon ist Fräulein Knoll, die Lehrerin der phantasievollen Drittklässlerin. Fräulein Knoll findet ihre Streiche gar nicht lustig, erteilt einen Tadel nach dem anderen und, als das alles nicht hilft, ein generelles Umgangsverbot. Fortan muss das Mädchen auf ihre Freunde verzichten. Zum Glück erweist sich ihr Vater Victor, ein recht erfolgloser Geschäftsmann, als begnadeter Spielgefährte. Mit seiner selbst konstruierten Wasserbombe vom Balkon aus Fräulein Knolls Haupt zu treffen, ist aber keine gute Idee und verschärft die Lage eher noch. Und das Leben im Krieg ist beschwerlich genug. Der Kupfertopf wurde für die Kanonenproduktion requiriert, Lebensmittel sind knapp, der Nachbar hat im Feld einen Arm verloren, das Mädchen muss Steckrüben stehlen und begibt sich in große Gefahr. Mit einem Brief an den Kaiser möchte sie schließlich für Frieden sorgen.
