A philosophical musing on sports and play, this wholly inspiring and utterly charming reissue of Bart Giamatti's long-out-of-print final book, Take Time for Paradise, puts baseball in the context of American life and leisure. Giamatti begins with the conviction that our use of free time tells us something about who we are. He explores the concepts of leisure, American-style. And in baseball, the quintessential American game, he finds its ultimate expression. "Sports and leisure are our reiteration of the hunger for paradise - for freedom untrammeled." Filled with pithy truths about such resonant subjects as ritual, self-betterment, faith, home, and community, Take Time for Paradise gives us much more than just baseball. These final, eloquent thoughts of "the philosopher king of baseball" (Seattle Weekly) are a joyful, reverent celebration of the sport Giamatti loved and the country that created it. ungekürzt. We all wish we possessed a sharp memory. How often do we envy those with clear recall and wondered how they do it while we fumble with names and facts on an everyday basis. Memory is the warehouse, where all static and emotional data is stored. Believe it or not, our brain is bombarded with 60,000 stimuli each second. The problem starts here; the brain memory has a huge capacity but that space is overstuffed with unnecessary thoughts. People often say that they forget things very fast or that they find it extremely difficult to remember things. The real reason for this is that their memory is overloaded with redundant information, which is like virus data obstructing the smooth functioning of the mind, making it weak. Meditation, mental exercises, reiteration, physical exercise which increases oxygen flow to the brain - all these and more, are the lessons we learn in achieving that strong memory we all admire and want. ungekürzt. Ortega’s unique passion for and leadership in publicizing the truth about human will comes across throughout the book’s devastating, yet accessible, explanations of why free will is impossible, and in its descriptions of the harm free will-belief causes us personally and societally. What also sets Ortega’s work apart from refutations by others is his strong recognition that humanity’s overcoming the belief in free will is an historic evolutionary leap in human consciousness. Comprising edited transcripts of the first episodes of his revolutionary TV series, another of his book’s defining characteristics is the reiteration of free will refutations and of other salient material.Listeners who lean toward free will belief are advised to not discount the utility, in fact the necessity, of such review. The emotional barriers to accepting that free will is impossible are powerful, and will not readily yield to an unrecapitulated presentation of the evidence. Ortega recognizes that unparalleled history has already been made as the age-old belief in free will has fallen to science, logic, and experience. ungekürzt. Language: English. The habit of worry is not to be overcome by unaided resolution. It is hoped that the victim of this unfortunate tendency may find, among the homely illustrations and commonplace suggestions here offered, something to turn his mind into more healthy channels. It is not the aim of the writer to transform the busy man into a philosopher of the indolent and contemplative type, but rather to enable him to do his work more effectively by eliminating undue solicitude. This elimination is consistent even with the strenuous life. One writer has distinguished between normal and abnormal worry, and directed his efforts against the latter. Webster's definition of worry ("A state of undue solicitude") obviates the necessity of deciding what degree and kind of worry is abnormal, and directs attention rather to deciding what degree of solicitude may be fairly adjudged undue. In the treatment of a subject of this character a certain amount of repetition is unavoidable. But it is hoped that the reiteration of fundamental principles and of practical hints will aid in the application of the latter. The aim is the gradual establishment of a frame of mind. There was a Child went Forth - in thirty-nine lines, the poet takes us from evocations of a child's early experiences of nature, town and family life to the precipice, both dreadful and ecstatic, of existential speculation. Three American Songs - Thoreau is, relative to the fame of his prose, little known as a poet, but he has a distinctive voice, short breathed with insistent rhyme schemes. The reiteration of the opening line of O Nature is like a mantra. A Noiseless Patient Spider places the voice in a web of piano figuration. The Shangri-La quality of Rumors from an Aeolian Harp is suggested by the hypnotic six for four rhythm in the piano. March, Hymn and Waltz frames Joyce's poems, "From dewey dreams, my soul arise" (hymn) and "The twilight turns from amethyst" (waltz) with a piano prelude, (march) and postlude. The set evokes parlor music. Czeslaw Milosz wrote these two poems during the height of WWII in Warsaw. In the first one, A Song On the End of the World, the apocalypse is imagined in the penultimate line, which is then repeated. The simplicity of the music in the opening of Recovery is as though one emerged from a shelter to find the world still existent. The five songs of Mother Leads Us are settings of Shaker melodies found in Edward Deming Andrew's The Gift to be Simple. In general I have not altered the melodies with the exception of the remarkable "spelling-out" tune Love and Blessing, which is subject to numerous octave displacements. Vocalise was written for my parents, both musicians, for their thirty-sixth wedding anniversary. They read through it, mom singing and dad playing, after a church service in 1979, the only time I heard it until this recording. Five Songs is a collection, not a cycle, though there are threads of connection between the poems. They are all from the 19th C, when poetry was commonly read, and they all, in their own way, are "bright" poems. The tragic note is not sounded. A Prayer for my Daughter is not only Yeats' meditation on his young child's future but also on his failed courtship of Maude Gonne. This generates a shift in tone so radical that for ten years I could never find a way to continue with the last four stanzas. So I left the poem "rooted in one dear perpetual place." - Nils Vigeland Canadian soprano, Delea Shand, is dedicated to performing and promoting new music.
