Rowing Upstream: A Russian Folktale, Hörbuch, Digital, 5min
Award-winning storyteller Bill Gordh (Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence winner, National Association of Parenting Periodicals Gold Award winner) presents this folk tale live with no script, accompanied only by his own dynamic banjo playing. Three friends borrowed a rowboat to row upstream. They wanted to row up to a village. There were three other villages they would pass on the way. So the first friend rowed as far as the first village. The second friend rowed as far as the second village. The third friend rowed as far as the third village. Then they began arguing about who would row the final stretch. While they argued, they were carried back downstream to where they had started. Language: English. Narrator: Bill Gordh. My Life in Boats, Fast, and Slow , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 387min
Andrew Larkin has recently published a memoir, My life in Boats, Fast, and Slow. The book is a coming-of-age story about a quest, his dream of going to the Olympics rowing. He rowed for the legendary Harry Parker, head crew coach at Harvard for over 50 years. They won gold in the Pan-American games in 1967. In 1968, they went to the Olympics, held in Mexico City, making the finals of the Olympics, coming in sixth. This audiobook details their triumphs and struggles. Some members of the Harvard crew supported at the Olympic project for human rights, which had been supported by Martin Luther King, Jr. The project’s goal was to give voice to the plight of black athletes in the United States in a non-violent fashion.Perhaps the iconic event of the games was the photo of Tommie Smith and John Carlos standing on the victory stand after the 200 m race; they stood with raised fists with black gloves and lowered heads. The book provides the background story of this protest and the minor role the crew had in it. There is discussion of rowing, the history of the Olympics, the issues of amateurism vs professionalism, and the issues of race in sports. These issues remain relevant today. The second part of the book details Larkin’s life after racing. He rowed down the Connecticut River from Northampton to Mystic, CT. There is commentary on the river, the places along the river, the geography of the valley, and the pleasures of messing about in boats. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Andrew Larkin. Stop Drifting, Start Rowing: One Woman's Search for Happiness and Meaning Alone on the Pacific , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 470min
In 2007, Roz Savage set out to row 8,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean—alone. Despite having successfully rowed across the Atlantic the previous year, the Pacific presented the former office worker with unprecedented challenges and overpowering currents—both in the water and within herself. Crossing Earth’s largest ocean alone might seem a long way removed from everyday life, yet the lessons Roz learned about the inner journey, the ocean, and the world are relevant to all of us. She shares tales of the ups and downs of her voyage across the waves, while offering insights on how to find happiness through a meaningful and rewarding life. ungekürzt. Language: English.
