Wirkungen, die Bilder nach oben spülen, die einem Film entstammen könnten. Insofern ist das neue Doppelalbum von Arcane verdammt guter Progstoff. Die Australier warten mit einer emotionalen und stilistischen Bandbreite auf, die in ihrem unangestrengten Grundcharakter selten ist. Ob in dem getragenen Holding Atropos, im treibenden Unturning oder in dem von dramatischen Brüchen durchzogenen Keeping Stone: Sound On Fire: Jeder Song verströmt eine ganz eigene Intensität, die einen schnell gefangen nimmt. Als würde man dem Soundtrack zu einem Gedicht lauschen. Die intensive Wirkung ist auch deswegen so überraschend, weil all diese Prog- bzw. Progmetal-Zutaten an sich nicht neu sind: ob nun die knatternden Stakkatoriffs von Gitarrist Michael Gagen oder Matt Martins mitunter in sinfonischen Bombast abgleitender Synthesizer. Erfrischend ist die Eingängigkeit, mit der die Australier zu Werke gehen. Eine Eigenschaft, die in die Richtung von Modern-Prog-Vertretern wie Karnivool weist. Unüberhörbar hat das in den frühen erjahren gegründete Quintett viel Zeit und Liebe in die Arrangements für dieses Album gesteckt. Dass sich die Qualitäten von Arcane längst herumgesprochen haben, bezeugt auch die gemeinsame Tour mit Queensrÿche. Nicht zuletzt ist es Jim Greys Gesangsleistung, die, so ausgelutscht es auch klingen mag, nicht nur die Ohren, sondern auch die Herzen für die so unterschiedlich gelagerten Tracks öffnet. Die Souveränität, mit der der Sänger zwischen zerbrechlichen, aggressiven und düsteren Momenten pendelt, ist bestechend.
