Julie Whitesel Weston left her hometown of Kellogg, Idaho, but eventually it pulled her back. Kellogg in the late 1940s and 50s was a typical American small town complete with high school football and basketball teams, marching band, and anti-Communist clubs; yet its bars, gambling dens, and brothels were entrenched holdovers from a rowdier frontier past. The Bunker Hill Mining Company, the largest employer, paid miners good wages for difficult, dangerous work, while the quest for lead, silver, and zinc denuded the mountainsides and laced the soil and water with contaminants. Much of this memoir of place set during the Cold War and post-McCarthyism is told through their voices. But Weston also considers how certain people made a difference in her life, especially her band director, her ski coach, and an attorney she worked for during a major strike. She also explores her charged relationship with her father, a hardworking doctor revered in the community for his dedication but feared at home for his drinking and rages. The Good Times Are All Gone Now begins the day the smokestacks came down, and it reaches far back into collective and personal memory to understand a way of life now gone. ungekürzt. A look at what lies ahead in the era of pandemics and distrust.... Are you being played? Maybe, maybe not. Just make sure that what you want for health and safety can't come back to bite you...as it did for this woman. She thought she was protecting her children. But the end result was a parent's worst nightmare. Be prepared. Download "For the Good of Society" – a short story of approximately 3,000 words. Prescient, prophetic, or just deranged? I'm not sure yet, but it happened to this woman – and it could happen to you. Excerpts....She had a family to consider, and she had done he right thing. I did it, she told herself, for the good of society. Then she called out to her husband: "Honey, come in here and take a look at this." The man put on his best bright face and strolled into the kitchen. He put his hand on his wife's shoulder and gave her a whisper of a kiss on top of her head. He had always loved the smell of her hair, but now – now, it smelled more like disinfectant and alcohol than the tropical scent he loved. "What's up, babe?" "Just look at these headlines. I did the right thing, didn't I?" "Of course, you did. This virus is nothing to mess around with. Got an email from work this morning – 53 company-wide in the hospital and seven dead. We've gotta think about the greater good. We have to 'flatten the curve.'" The woman smiled up at him. "Thanks, hon. I know you're right, but.... " . . . Oh, sure, the woman had seen those sprawling enclosures sprouting up and expanding outside of town. They seemed to get bigger and higher at night like some kind of noxious fungal growths. But then she so seldom got out that it could have just been her imagination. Still, those tall fences topped with razor wire and the smokestacks belching smoke nonstop were a little troubling. So she'd asked her husband about it. "Hon, do you know what they're building out ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott MacDonald. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/210423/bk_acx0_210423_sample.mp3. There were six of them in total, more than had been present in the bar (not that it mattered, they would have rounded up others, I was sure). The important thing is that it was them — the MAGA crew — of that I had little doubt. Three of them were crowded into the cab while three others rode in the payload — all of them wearing crudely-stitched burlap hoods — and each brandishing some form of weapon, whether that meant a pistol or a rifle or a rusty pitchfork. The truck, meanwhile, was right out of central casting — I’d seen others like it in the red states I’d already passed through. You’ve seen them too: those jacked-up tanks with the huge tires and pig-ear smokestacks (their way of saying “fuck you” to the environmentalists), and the twin flags crackling in their payloads — usually an American and a “Don’t Tread on Me,” but sometimes a bona fide Confederate Southern cross, which is what this one had, along with one I couldn’t clearly see. All I can say for certain is that the men in the back put down their weapons as I watched and appeared to fiddle with something in the payload — I really couldn’t say because I had to look away in order to focus on the road.Meanwhile it didn’t exactly surprise me to see that I — we — were going about 90 miles-per-hour — the fastest I’d ever traveled in a moving vehicle, and a speed at which the Camry had become dangerously unstable. I thought then of my decision when I was young to never own a firearm, and laughed a little at my own expense. Only then (and how I’d managed to not think of it until that instant remains a mystery) did it finally occur to me: my bloody phone was right there on the passenger seat! The truck’s engine roared and its flags crackled as I snatched the thing up and dialed 911, putting it on speaker so that I might better focus on the road, not to mention re-grip the wheel firmly in both hands.A moment later it came: “911, what’s the address of your emergency?"I stammered and ungekürzt.
