Material Cultures of Psychiatry
In the past, our ideas of psychiatric hospitals and their history have been shaped by objects like straitjackets, cribs, and binding belts. These powerful objects were often used as a synonym for psychiatry and the way psychiatric patients were treated, yet very little is known about the agency of these objects and their appropriation by staff and patients. By focusing on material cultures, this book offers a new perspective on the history of psychiatry: it enables a narrative in which practicing psychiatry is part of a complex entanglement in which power is constantly negotiated. Scholars from different academic disciplines show how this material-based approach opens up new perspectives on the agency and imagination of men and women inside psychiatry.- Shop: buecher

The Story of the Great Houdini , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 22min
Many people will probably not recognize the name Erik Weisz or Ehrich Weiss. But an expression of awe will definitely come across the face if someone says Harry Houdini. Yes, these two names belong to the same man, The Great Houdini. Harry Houdini was an illusionist and stunt performer, famous for his sensational acts in the first part of the 20th century. He is especially famous for his escape acts and escaped from handcuffs, chains, and ropes slung from skyscrapers, and straitjackets under water. He even escaped from a sealed milk can. While most people know about his sensational acts, not many know a lot about Harry Houdini's life. This audiobook is an attempt to look at the lesser known facts about his life and also follow his journey to fame and later. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Pete Beretta. A Marked Woman , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 515min
A Marked Woman is based on a true story of a husband's betrayal. It takes place in central Pennsylvania when Naomi Bryar awakens in a mental institution. Trapped behind closed doors, her attempt to escape fails. She fights back as attendants force a straitjacket over her head, pull her arms tight across her chest, and drag her to a padded cell.Exhausted, she lay helpless on the matted floor. Sobbing till her voice is but a whisper, she recalls her early years during the 1929 Depression, the happy times raising her two children in the Pennsylvania woods, and the difficulties World War II brought about during her 23 years of marriage.Naomi did her best to follow her religious up-bringing. There were many twists and turns during her 43 years of life, but what did she do so wrong that landed her here?"In Joan Foor's gripping novel A Marked Woman, we relive a time in recent history when a philandering husband could commit his wife to a life of torture, a time when misdiagnosis was rampant and straitjackets and shock therapy were accepted medical "treatments". We share a daughter and son's frustration, knowing the truth about their father's mistress yet unable to rescue their mother. The story grabs and does not let go, and the charming 1940s romance of the fated couple only makes the outcome more painful. A haunting, unforgettable must-read." (Kathryn Jordan, author of Hot Water, Gladys and Capone, In The Time of Apricots, and The Sins of Esther Mary)"The author has poured out her heart in this gut-wrenching story based on her mother's tortured life." (Cynda Thomas, author of He Came from the Sky, Hell of a Ride, and the new release The Wasp and the Hornet) ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kathleen Godwin. American Legends: The Life of Harry Houdini , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 68min
I knew, as everyone knows, that the easiest way to attract a crowd is to let it be known that at a given time and a given place someone is going to attempt something that in the event of failure will mean sudden death. That's what attracts us to the man who paints the flagstaff on the tall building, or to the 'human fly' who scales the walls of the same building. (Harry Houdini) A lot of time has been spent covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute. And they can do so while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. There is no shortage of professional magicians and stunt men in the 21st century, but all of them owe something to the most famous stunt man of them all: Harry Houdini. A century after he began to thrill audiences with his patented escape acts, Houdini's name remains synonymous with seemingly miraculous escapes and getaways. His name is instantly recognizable even among those who have never seen pictures of his stunts. Houdini wasn't the first of his kind. But after he got his start as "Harry Handcuff Houdini" during a traveling European tour he added the kind of showmanship and flair that have become standard fare among performers of his kind. His initial repertoire of escaping handcuffs eventually gave way to far grander feats, involving skyscrapers, straitjackets, and being buried alive. ungekürzt. Language: English. His initial repertoire of escaping handcuffs eventually gave way to far grander feats, involving skyscrapers, straitjackets, and being buried alive. With fame came skepticism, and Houdini was frequently accused of being a fake and fixing his escapes. Some even believed he was helped by supernatural forces. Skeptics were bolstered by the fact that, like his escapes and magic tricks, Houdini remained a man shrouded in mystery, constantly changing his own life story to reinvent himself as he thought fit. Though Houdini insisted his stunts were real and constantly went after those who besmirched him or his profession, his success couldn't help but breed both legends and criticism simultaneously. By the end of his life, Houdini had transformed himself into a national celebrity, and he tried to dabble in acting and other pursuits, but he was destined to be forever associated with the profession he helped pioneer. ungekürzt.
