At home alone for the holidays, Agatha Raisin decides to host a dinner party for the elder residents in her Cotswold village of Winter Parva. Agatha's never been much of a homemaker, but she's dead set on making this the perfect holiday for the 'crumblies', as she affectionately calls them. She's decorated a tree while fending off her cats, Hodge and Boswell, and even made a (lumpy) Christmas pudding in between swigs of rum. But when Agatha dumps the pudding on the head of the local self-proclaimed lothario - an 85-year-old with a beer belly and fingers like sausages - his death by dessert proves more than a trifle as mysteries mount higher than the season's snowfall. So much for trying to do good by her neighbors. Now Agatha needs no less than a Christmas miracle to get herself out of this one. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Penelope Keith. Finding your place in the world can be the longest trip home... In the highly anticipated follow-up to Marley & Me, John Grogan again works his magic, bringing us the story of what came first. Before there was Marley, there was a gleefully mischievous boy growing up in a devout Catholic home outside Detroit in the 1960s and '70s. Despite his loving parents' best efforts, John's attempts to meet their expectations failed spectacularly. Whether it was his disastrous first confession, the purloined swigs of sacramental wine, or the fumbled attempts to sneak contraband past his father, John was figuring out that the faith and fervor that came so effortlessly to his parents somehow had eluded him. And then one day, a strong-willed young woman named Jenny walked into his life. As their love grew, John began the painful, funny, and poignant journey into adulthood, away from his parents' orbit and into a life of his own. It would take a fateful call and the onset of illness to lead him on the final leg of his journey, the trip home again. With his trademark blend of humor and pathos that made Marley & Me beloved by millions, John Grogan traces the universal journey each of us must take to find our unique place in the world. Filled with revelation and laugh-out-loud humor, The Longest Trip Home will capture your heart, but mostly it will make you want to reach out to those you love most. ungekürzt. Language: English. Following the phenomenal success of Marley & Me, John Grogan's memoir is a warm and moving tribute to the power of family and love which will delight John's fans and has all the ingredients to become the same word-of-mouth bestseller. In his debut bestseller Marley & Me, John Grogan showed how a dog can become an extraordinary presence in the life of one family. Now in his highly anticipated follow-up, Grogan again works his magic, bringing us the true story of what came first. Before there was Marley, there was a gleefully mischievous boy growing up in a devout Catholic home outside Detroit in the 1960s and 70s. Despite his loving parents' best efforts, John's attempts to meet their expectations failed spectacularly. Whether it was his disastrous first confession, his use of his hobby telescope to take in the bronzed Mrs. Selahowski sunbathing next door, the purloined swigs of sacramental wine, or as he got older, the fumbled attempts to sneak contraband past his father and score with girls beneath his mother's vigilant radar, John was figuring out that the faith and fervor that came so effortlessly to his parents somehow had eluded him. And then one day, a strong-willed young woman named Jenny walked into his life. As their romance grew, John began the painful, funny, and poignant journey into adulthood - away from his parents' orbit and into a life of his own. It would take a fateful call and the onset of illness to lead him on the final leg of his journey - the trip home again. The Longest Trip Home is a book for any son or daughter who has sought to forge an identity at odds with their parents', and for every parent who has struggled to understand the values of their children. With his trademark blend of humor and pathos that made Marley & Me beloved by millions, John Grogan traces the universal journey each of us must take to find our place in the world. ungekürzt. This audio edition of Dead Lines includes a new foreword by David Niall Wilson as well as an author's foreword by Criag Spector and an afterword by John Skipp. Dead Lines is about a young writer/artist type named Jack Rowan, who lives in NYC and whose career never took off. His life is in the toilet. He's broken up with his girlfriend and is crashing on the couch in the loft of his more successful photographer friend, Glen, while Glen is off in LA on a shoot. In the first chapter, Jack finishes his manuscript - a collection of short stories titled Nightmare NYC - takes swigs of vodka then boxes the manuscript up, writing, "Do Not Open Until Doomsday" on it. He then hides it in a crawlspace in his friend's apartment. Then he walks up a ladder he set up in the living room, puts the rope he tied to a steam pipe around his neck. He takes one last swig of the bottle, looks at a photo in his hand of himself and a woman, and says, "Look what you made me do."Then he tosses the bottle and pitches the ladder off. The rope goes taut. Jack's neck snaps as he pinwheels around in midair, knocking over the ladder, swinging wildly as he hangs himself. Finally, he goes still. His body hangs there for weeks, visible through the fourth floor windows of the loft...if anyone was looking, which no one was. He remains there until Glen gets back. Glenn freaks out and promptly moves out. The loft is renovated for new tenants. A couple of girls who don't know each other move in. Meryl is from a wealthy family in Boston and is trying to escape her overbearing father by going to college at NYU. Katie, the other girl, is a waitress who used to know Glenn...and Jack. Meryl convinces Katie to pretend to be her roommate to get Meryl's father off her back. At first Katie says, "No, thanks," but then she goes back to her Svengali-esque boyfriend, Colin's, apartment, where she lives. She finds him in bed with two girls - customers - as Colin ungekürzt.
