Downeast Standup, Hörbuch, Digital, 50min
Recorded at The State Theatre of Maine at Lakewood in the spring of 1983, footage from this performance became the basis of Tim’s first prime-time TV special on Maine PBS. Released on vinyl LP in the fall of 1983, Downeast Standup was the first of four Tim Sample solo albums to be produced on the Bert and I label in the 1980s. Now widely considered a classic of 20th century Maine dialectal storytelling, this recording contains Tim’s signature story "Saturday Night at Moody’s Diner" as well as his moving tribute to his friend and mentor the late Bert and I co-founder Marshall Dodge, whose death in a hit-and-run auto accident at the age of 45 had sent shockwaves through the Maine storytelling community. Tim’s classic “About Maine Humor”, also included here, has become a popular Youtube clip, and this recording also marks the first appearance of Tim’s fictional son “Our Boy Hubert”, whose adventures continued on subsequent albums and television specials. This album was edited with razor blades and patch tape by Tim and folk legend Noel Paul Stookey (Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary) at Neworld, the famous “Henhouse” recording and animation studio in South Blue Hill, Maine. Back in Spite of Popular Demand, Hörbuch, Digital, 36min
Recorded at The Portland Performing Arts Center in 1985, this performance became the basis for Tim’s second Maine PBS prime-time TV special, as well as his second LP for the Bert and I company. In the two years since the release of Downeast Standup, Tim had been busy with over 150 shows a year, and the maturation of his stage presence and storytelling style is evident here. At this point in his career, Tim was building a national reputation and a loyal fan base for his ability to forge an unlikely and unique blend of traditional Maine dialectal storytelling and completely off-the-wall stand up comedy. If you don’t know what that sounds like on stage, the "Mr. Coffee I.V. Tale" is a perfect example. The "Strict Carnivore" routine has Tim departing from Maine humor entirely, with hilarious results; it had been a staple of Tim’s stage show since his days as a teenage front man for rock bands in the 60s. Speaking of rock bands, this recording also contains Tim’s original song “Takin’ Comfort”, with lyrics based on a poem by 19th- and early 20th-century Maine humorist and storyteller Holman Day. Born in Maine!!, Hörbuch, Digital, 40min
There’s an interesting story behind the title of this audio, which was recorded at the Crooker Theatre in Brunswick, Maine, in the summer of 1997. The previous year, legendary veteran CBS newsman Charles Kuralt had personally recruited Tim and invited him join the on-air talent as a regular correspondent for the Emmy Award-winning TV show CBS News Sunday Morning. At the time of this performance, Tim’s “Postcards from Maine” essays were being aired at least once a month to a national (and international) audience of several million people. This resulted in a huge increase in interest in Tim’s work and contributed to the "overnight success after 20 years" phenomenon. Perhaps as a result of his new status on network TV, a rumor began to circulate that Tim Sample was not originally from Maine! Of course, such an allegation hurled at a native Mainer is not taken lightly. Hence the title of this recording. The stories here are a continuation of the concept of dry down east one-liners established on Snappy Answers! Language: English. Rock Star , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 249min
To Tim Anderson, playing the guitar is as natural - and just about as important - as breathing. He’s already decided he’s going to be a musician. But his father has other career plans for him - all involving college. And now, because Tim is on the verge of flunking math, he’s been forbidden even to touch his guitar. It couldn’t have happened at a worse time. A top record company has just announced a nationwide contest for teenage rock groups - with a recording contract as first prize. Tim is sure his group, The Silver Sunshine, has a good chance of winning. Tim’s best friend, Charlie Hoving, urges him to ignore his father’s orders. But Tim just can’t do it. In spite of their disagreements, he basically likes and respects his father. So he obeys the ban (more or less) - until a crisis arises on the night of the contest…Tim realizes his only chance to make it is to leave home and go to New York City. His decision leads to some unpleasant experience with a man named Crazy, some rude shocks from the record company executive who had given him encouragement back home, and some surprising, and confusing, discoveries while playing with a new group, The Sound System. Tim’s stubborn pursuit of his dream, and his initiation into the high-voltage world of rock music, make an exciting and absorbing story. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan John Miller.
