The Ballad of Tommy Atkins was first published as “Tommy” in Kipling’s timeless Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses in the 1890s. "Tommy Atkins", or simply Tommy, was a generic name applied to British soldiers from as early as the 18th century, but came into popular parlance during the First World War when troops were simply referred to as “Tommies”. The ballad exposes the bitterness felt by the British soldier to the public’s treatment of their forces in times of peace, and how that alters in wartime. ungekürzt. Language: English. Armageddon tells the story of the climatic months of the Second World War and the destruction of Hitler's Germany. In this compelling study, the author addresses the big human and military questions. Why did the Allies not win the war in 1944, when they were vastly stronger than the Germans? Why did the Russians produce the best generals? What was it like to fight the British, American, German, and Soviet armies? This book embraces the fates of more than a hundred million people, from the tragic teenage fanatics who died in the ruins of Hitler's Reich to the British "Tommies" who simply yearned to finish a painful job and go home. Few books on the Second World War have so vividly brought together the story of the battlefields, east and west, with the decisions of the generals and the impact of great events upon ordinary soldiers and civilians. Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Jeremy Paxman's Great Britain's Great War. Read by the actor Roy McMillan, this magnificent history of the First World War tells the story of the war in one gripping narrative from the point of view of the British people. We may think we know about it, but what was life really like for the British people during the First World War? The well-known images - the pointing finger of Lord Kitchener; a Tommy buried in the mud of the Western Front; the memorial poppies of remembrance day - all reinforce the idea that it was a pointless waste of life. So why did the British fight it so willingly and how did the country endure it for so long? Using a wealth of first-hand source material, Jeremy Paxman brings vividly to life the day-to-day experience of the British over the entire course of the war, from politicians, newspapermen, campaigners and Generals, to Tommies, factory workers, nurses, wives and children, capturing the whole mood and morale of the nation. It reveals that life and identity in Britain were often dramatically different from our own, and show how both were utterly transformed - not always for the worst - by the enormous upheaval of the war. Rich with personalities, surprises and ironies, this lively narrative history paints a picture of courage and confusion, doubts and dilemmas, and is written with Jeremy Paxman's characteristic flair for storytelling, wry humour and pithy observation. Jeremy Paxman is a renowned broadcaster, award-winning journalist and the bestselling author of seven works of non-fiction, including The English, The Political Animal and Empire. ungekürzt. An enthusiastic, committed but naïve priest, Peter Graham, leaves his fiancée, Hilda, to serve as chaplain in France during World War I. He is rapidly made aware of the British tommies' total indifference to what he has to offer and is appalled at the decline in morality of the officers revealed by their disrespect and attitude towards the local French women, most of who consequently lead lives of easy virtue. The chaplain's faith is almost destroyed, and while in this disillusioned state of mind he falls in love with a South African nurse, a free and generous spirit, whose total lack of conventionality bewitches him. The novel was hugely successful at the time of publication not only for the honest eyewitness account of service life during that holocaust (the author was a chaplain during that time and fell in love with a nurse) but also for the later scenes of a very frank sexual nature when the lovers spend a weekend together on leave, although these are tame now to a modern audience. Julie, the heroine, is a wonderful creation, the epitome of what it must have been to 'live now for tomorrow we may die', and it is her total selflessness that determines the fate of the affair. The author paid the price for his commercial success, earning contempt from leading members of the church, little critical acclaim for his work and a self-imposed exile a few years after publication, but the book still maintains interest because of the element of autobiography. It has that undeniable ring of truth. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Peter Newcombe Joyce. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/assm/000128/bk_assm_000128_sample.mp3.
