When a squad of federal agents burst through her parents' front door, Victoria Fedden felt ill-prepared to meet them: She was weeks away from her due date, and her T-shirt wasn't long enough to hide her maternity undies. As for the question of how to raise a child when you've just discovered that your mother and stepfather have allegedly masterminded a pump-and-dump scheme? She was pretty sure that wasn't covered in What to Expect When You're Expecting - and she really hoped that Bradford Cohen, the noted criminal defense attorney who famously waived his exemption on The Apprentice, would prove them innocent. This Is Not My Beautiful Life is the story of how Victoria lost her parents to prison and nearly lost her mind. No one ever said motherhood would be easy, but as she struggles to change diapers, install car seats, and find the right drop-off line at preschool - no easy task when each one is named for a stage in the life cycle of a butterfly - she's also forced to ask herself whether a jumpsuit might actually complement her mom's platinum-blonde extensions and fend off the cast of shady, stranger-than-fiction characters who populated her parents' world. ungekürzt. Who would have thought that an Asian-American, who stood just 5' 3" tall as a freshman in high school, and eventually went to Harvard to major in economics, would become the NBA's most talked about star in decades? But that's exactly what happened to Jeremy Lin. Undrafted out of college and subsequently waived in short order by both the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets, Lin was signed by the underachieving New York Knicks. After a three-game stint in the D-League for players deemed not yet good enough, he was recalled when a roster spot opened up. In his first 23 games, however, he played for just 55 minutes and was again close to being cut. Then, on February 4, he came off the bench against the New Jersey Nets and scored 25 points and led the Knicks to victory. He started the following game and took off, scoring 28 points and adding 8 assists. And just like that… Linsanity was born. In his first five starts, the now 6' 3" Lin not only showed that he knew all the nuances of playing point guard, but also made the players around him better. With the Knicks two biggest stars - Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire - out of the lineup, the Knicks won seven straight, making Jeremy Lin the toast of New York and the biggest feel-good story in the NBA. Madison Square Garden is again rocking every night as Jeremy Lin continues to lead his team toward an unexpected playoff berth. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: L. J. Ganser. Produced by Louis G. Cowan, Command Performance aired between 1942 and 1949 over the Armed Forces Radio Network (AFRS) with a direct shortwave transmission to American troops overseas. Performed before a live audience in Hollywood, the weekly listening military audience was estimated at 95.5 million. Troops sent in requests to hear their favorite celebrities, and they also suggested unusual ideas or situations for them to be put into. Top stars of the day appeared, including Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Shirley Temple, Abbott & Costello, Jack Benny, Frank Sinatra, Clark Gable, Ginger Rogers, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart and many more. First heard on March 1, 1942 (almost three months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor), Command Performance would have cost a commercial sponsor a weekly talent fee of $50,000 but for Uncle Sam, all fees were waived. The program generally ran for 30 minutes each week, except for holiday and special broadcasts, continuing well after World War II for a total of 400+ programs.  4/23/42 w/ Pat O’Brien, Burns & Allen, Frank Morgan, Frances Langford and John Conte 5/7/42 w/ Bette Grable, Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone, Dennis Day, Phil Harris, Eddie Anderson, Mary Martin and Judy Canova 5/13/42 w/ Marlene Dietrich, Mitzi Green, Al Jolson, Eddie Peabody, Tommy Riggs and Kenny Baker. 5/18/42 w/ George Raft, Deanna Durbin, Dinah Shore, Rudy Vallee and Elvia Allman 6/2/42 w/ Mickey Rooney, Betty Hutton, Bob Burns, Freeman Gosden & Charles Correll (Amos ‘n’ Andy), Bert Gordon and Harry James and His Orchestra 6/11/42 w/ Don Ameche, Max Baer, Carole Landis, Bing Crosby and John Scott Trotter and His Orchestra 6/18/42 w/ William Powell, Martha Tilton, Gene Autry, Judy Garland, George Jessel, Mel Blanc, The Melody Ranch Boys and Lou Bring and His Orchestra 7/28/42 w/ Cary Grant, Ruth Hussey, Judy Garland, Ruth Hussey and Woody Herman and His Orchestra 7/7/42 w/ Bob Hope, Ginny Simm Language: English. Anyone who saw Roberto Clemente, as he played with a beautiful fury, will never forget him. He was a work of art in a game too often defined by statistics. During his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he won four batting titles and led his team to championships in 1960 and 1971, getting a hit in all 14 World Series games in which he played. His career ended with 3,000 hits, the magical 3,000th coming in his final at-bat, and he and the immortal Lou Gehrig are the only players to have the five-year waiting period waived so they could be enshrined in the Hall of Fame immediately after their deaths. There is delightful baseball here, including thrilling accounts of the two World Series victories of Clemente's underdog Pittsburgh Pirates, but this is far more than just another baseball book. Roberto Clemente was that rare athlete who rose above sports to become a symbol of larger themes. Born near the canebrakes of rural Carolina, Puerto Rico, on August 18, 1934, at a time when there were no blacks or Puerto Ricans playing organized ball in the United States, Clemente went on to become the greatest Latino player in the major leagues. He was, in a sense, the Jackie Robinson of the Spanish-speaking world, a ballplayer of determination, grace, and dignity who paved the way and set the highest standard for waves of Latino players who followed in later generations and who now dominate the game. The Clemente that Maraniss evokes was an idiosyncratic character who, unlike so many modern athletes, insisted that his responsibilities extended beyond the playing field. In his final years, his motto was that if you have a chance to help others and fail to do so, you are wasting your time on this earth. Language: English. Narrator: David Maraniss.
