I never applied makeup in Nairobi or San Diego. That must have made me look too plain to American eyes. Well, I wore the best clothes I owned, a pair of blue jeans and a turquoise-green top I bought at Kmart. At the parking lot, Mr. Millionaire opened their luxurious car's front passenger door. After his wife settled in, he opened the back door and shut it after I entered. I sat almost at the edge of the backseat with the door as support and placed my purse on my left side. It made me feel snug and secure. As soon as he eased the quiet car from the airport, Mr. Millionaire described everything noteworthy along our route. But my mind focused on how I would last for six weeks in the couple's household. I recalled how much I had enjoyed his company back in Nairobi, but in Boca Raton uneasiness unsettled me.     Paper Cameras began as a series of solo material from Michael Carothers after All the Dead Horses broke up. Four self released (and now out of print) e.p.'s with sounds ranging from a redneck Brian Eno fronting a Guided by Husker Du-ish Devo swam in the undercurrent of the Portland's scene sounding off with a fondness for I.R.S. era R.E.M. but raining rivers of over driven tube amps coping a feel on The Kinks or The Troggs. Slowly by very surely co-producer Sean Flora (The Shins, The Black Keys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) fell into place as a band member. Josh Bretton's reoccurring lick-y guitar was found among a host of PDX's finest musicians also lending their talents in the studio as well as on stage. And then in 2008 things changed. Carothers decided to hand the microphone over to an old friend in Nashville. That person was Jerry Campbell (Millionaire Magicians, Spider Virus, Hands Down Eugene) and from that collaboration began a new phase in Paper Cameras, not out of step with previous work, but far more focused, simple and brooding. Their first album of psychedelic sounds caught between Love and Rockets and The Beach Boys is 'Lost Weekend'. There are two other e.p.'s currently in the works. Michael Carothers is also currently in Radiant Silvergun with Chuck Westmorland (The Kingdom) and played in Spectator Pump as well as hardcore bands with Hank III.

Started as a project to show his kids a person can make and sell their own music, his music takes a semi-autobiographical view of his experiences in the last decade. By turns serious and humorous, he delved into blues, rhythm and blues, jazz and gospel to write a collection of songs that described life in middle America in the first decade of the 21st century. From the anger in "Smoke and Mirrors" and "Two Paychecks from the Street", the humor in "Lost your Place" or the poignancy of "Hunker Down "or "Last Time I Saw Phil", Hifi Mojo mixes the rich soil of American music to reflect on a middle class slowly being destroyed by greed and stupidity. As Marty said, "This is about peoples' lives in America now. We're in a poker game playing against a house full of wealth and power, but who deals from a stacked deck. Hunker Down: A moody rumination on the 2004 presidential election, but whose words also echo the desolation after hurricane Katrina one year later. The rain never stops. More atmospherics by Sean Flora. Great slide work by guitarist Gaddis Cavenah. Barcode: Second-line funk and horns propel a bouncy little tune about the 'mark of the beast.' The legendary Fats Domino's tenor saxophone player Reggie Houston turns in a couple of gutsy solos. Wind Turns Blue: A bluesy ballad with piano by engineer Ron Rogers sounding like Floyd Cramer strained through a Professor Longhair blender. Ron's next door neighbor Claes Amroth plays harp. The theme is tried and true blues. Sometimes a guy can't do nothin' right. Lost Your Place: A steamy Slim Harpo-like swamper about love lost and found again. Sometimes living in a small town has it's advantages. More funky harp by Claes (pronounced Klaus) Nowhere to Go: A late night jazz-tinged blues about those years when everything seems to go wrong. In this case, 2001 sucked. Ditto 2002. Smoky, Hammond B-3 arrangement by Ben Partain. Reggie Houston lights it up again on tenor. Two Paychecks From the Street: A heartfelt minor blues about the slow collapse of the American Dream as told by the people who lived it, while I was doing a crappy little collections job for a mega-bank. Gaddis on slide and Ben Partain on B-3 burn it to the ground. Last Time I Saw Phil: A gospel-flavored farewell to a much-loved bassist, friend and fellow traveler, Phil Haxton. I wrote this the night before his memorial service. Recorded live in Gaddis' basement, the first song Hifi Mojo ever recorded. Ben plays the B-3 and kicks bass, while Gaddis plays some sweet slide. Smokin': A big, wide, uptown shuffle about...well, adult themes. Horns by Peter Moss and Steve Cameron.
