Won't Say Sorry-The Complete Cover Story
March 1981, Russel (DUCKY) Payne, his brother Ronnie and Gary Tier - all Cardiff Skins - along with Martin Brennan, a valley Skin, form an Oi! Band. After tossing a few names around, including FORCED OPPRESSION, they decide that THE OPPRESSED fits the bill. So it was that with not much ability and a ton of enthusiasm the boys set out to have a ball. With the departure of Ronnie from THE OPPRESSED, Ducky, Gary and Brennan eventually turn up on Roddy Moreno's doorstep and make him an offer he can't refuse. With Roddy as second guitarist and his brother Dom on bass, this line up lasted about a year. Brennan and Gary had decided to leave so Roddy took over vocals and found Lee Jenkins to take care of drumming. This line up lasted about 2 years and recorded nearly everything issued in the eighties. Almost all their gigs ended in a ruck (boys will be boys) and eventually they got fed up with the whole thing. They did get together in the studio with Juan Garcia - a punk from near Cardiff - on drums, recorded 3 cover versions but played no gigs. So that was it for the eighties. After the split in '84, Roddy Moreno spent the next 6 years setting up and running Oi! Records and Ska Records labels, helped to establish S.H.A.R.P and in 1987/8, put together The Rude Boys with his brothers Dom and Adrian (R.I.P) and 3 sax players. By the end of the eighties the Rude Boys had fallen apart and the labels were struggling. There was a baby (THE Oi! BOY) on the way so Roddy had to give up on music and get a job. 'I put The Oppressed back together in 1994 after some Fascist shite had been putting up C'18 (Niggers Out) stickers in my area. I tore off the stickers and thought 'fuck this' and set out to use the band's profile to Fight Fascism again. For the next 2 years me, Dom and Adrian recorded some Anti-Fascist records including the benefit E-P 'FUCK FASCISM'. We played a few local 'Shows for the Boys' including our farewell gig with the Warriors which was filmed for the THEY THINK IT'S ALL OVER - IT IS NOW video. Although this was our farewell gig we received an offer we couldn't refuse, to play the Camden Irish Center for ANTI-FASCIST ACTION (Oct' 5th 1996). The Business had a gig wrecked by C'18 because they wouldn't have C'18 provide security. The Fascists then announced that no Oi! Bands could play London without C'18 security. The lads from A-F-A said 'FUCK THAT' and arranged a concert for us. Floyd was now in the band on guitar and this was his one and only gig with us. The Stage Bottles had come from Germany to support us. It was a top night. Just like back in '81, no trouble at all. It was one of our best gigs and, not surprisingly, C'18 became invisible men'. 1998 saw THE OPPRESSED back together with a new drummer (YAN) to do some more recording. Now it's 2004 and they're back in rehearsals. The latest line up is still Roddy, Dom and Floyd, with Tony Kizmus (ex-Societys Rejects) on drums. As one of the only long-standing true skinhead bands, THE OPPRESSED have stayed the course through thick and thin. Always loyal to their roots. Never pandering to the bullshit of the mainstream music industry. One-off live dates in Germany, Belgium, Italy, and Canada have been organized for the band in 2005.- Shop: odax

Bustello
Out of the Tobacco Road region of NC, hotbed of indie rock music, come eight new tracks from Bustello. Bustello features Ben Clarke (of the critically acclaimed Metal Flake Mother) on guitar and vocals. After a 15-year hiatus, Ben has unleashed a bounty of great new material - these eight songs are just a sample of things to come. The trio is rounded out by bass player John Plymale (former Sex Police frontman, music producer) and drummer Jody Maxwell (also of the Sex Police). Bustello musically picks up where Metal Flake Mother left off, blending Ben's distinctive vocals and guitar with John's dynamic bass presence and Jody's incisive rhythms. CD review from the Independent Weekly: Given the pedigree, it's hardly surprising that Bustello's eight-song debut EP is this catchy and sharply written. Frontman Ben Clarke led early-'90s outfit Metal Flake Mother, which released music on Mammoth Records. Bassist and producer John Plymale played with local icons Sex Police and The Pressure Boys before becoming a popular local studio man with Superchunk, Squirrel Nut Zippers and Tift Merritt. Clarke's baritone croon lingers like smoke blown by the music's shimmy and sway here, echoing the shapely, summery warmth of Britpop acts like Blur and Pulp. The insistent mid-tempo hooks counterbalance any frothy undercurrent, with bursts of spiky guitar that recall the churn of Polvo. The resulting tension conceives a sound that's amenable but not necessarily easy-you can take it home, but you'd best not put Barry White on when you come through the door. While the songs are relatively brief (half barely top 2:30, and nothing lasts longer than 3:30), Clarke still leads his six-string through an exciting variety of paces, eschewing the typical repeated riff gallop. It gives the songs more staying power, if perhaps making them less immediate. Thanks in large part to that guitar approach, each track establishes it's own identity. The most personable include the terrific, rockabilly-inflected 'Flavorful Love' and pulsing opener, 'No Right of Mine,' which may be the most irrepressibly catchy number here, thanks to a great choral melody. The album-closing ballad, 'In the Void,' sounds something like The Replacements trying their hand at Britpop, swollen, textured rock plated by a bit of country swagger. Bustello often sounds familiar yet never entirely derivative, and they're infectious without pandering. This debut might not feature songs you immediately rewind, but like a bad cold, these tunes keep returning. CD review from The Daily News: Alternative rock outfit Metal Flake Mother didn't last long-their lone full-length "Beyond the Java Sea" dropped in 1991-but the North Carolina-based band's influence still lingers. After a 15-year hiatus, a new band, Bustello, and their self-titled debut EP represents a welcome return for the talented singer/songwriter. Clarke's baritone sounds as good as ever and Bustello shine on songs like "No Right of Mine" "Down South" "Playground" and "Flavorful Love." I'm anxious to see what they can do over the course of a full album. CD review from Blurt magazine: Bustello presents eight jagged, jangly pop tunes from Clarke's pen, rattling with hooks and sharp arrangements. 'Ocean,' 'No Right of Mine' and the almost-ballad 'Heaven' don't mess around, saying what they have to say as efficiently as possible and getting out. But you won't feel cheated - nearly every track is a fully developed, finely crafted nugget of pop gold.- Shop: odax

They Might Be Giants: Why?
They Might Be Giants laden endlich Eichörnchen an der Trompete ein. Warum? Weil es das erste Album der Band mit Kinderliedern ist! At last! TMBG is returning to the world of kids stuff! You might have heard some of the tracks previewed on Dial-A-Song, but we can now confirm the 27th of November arrival of a fantastic set of 18 new songs called Why? What kind of album is Why? Well, it's not bad for you but it's not good for you either. It's just about fun, like TMBG's first kids album No! Why? is memorable songs in family-friendly package with none of that pandering aftertaste. Like previous TMBG kid productions it's a family affair with John Flansburgh's wife Robin "Goldie¿ Goldwasser singing a ouple of tracks, while bassist Danny Weinkauf, joined by his son and daughter, steps up to the mic for the song Elephants. Alison Cowles, the daughter longtime video animation collaborator David Cowles (The Mesopotamians, what's his other biggest one?) has contributed all the illustrations for the album. Right out of the gate TMBG hits the listener with the odd brilliance of "Oh You Did¿ through the folkie charm of "Out of A Tree,¿ the full rocking of "Or So I Have Read¿ the perky "I Just Want to Dance,¿ and wrapping things up with the optimism of "Then The Kids Took Over.¿ Why? has everything to delight both kids and parents.- Shop: odax
