Im Jahr 2002 wurde sie bei den ersten freien Wahlen Kenias ins Parlament gewählt, seit 2003 war sie stellvertretende Ministerin für Umwelt. 2004 wurde sie mit dem Friedensnobelpreis geehrt. Wangari Maathai starb im September 2011 in Nairobi.
