Fought over bitterly cold flecks of rock and tundra scattered across the remote waters marking the boundary between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean, the Aleutian Islands campaign represented one of the strangest encounters of World War II. Curving southwestward from the southwest coast of Alaska like the tail of a stingray, the rugged, volcanic Aleutians belong to both the United States and Russia. The westernmost island, Attu, lies much closer to Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula than to Alaska; the distance to Anchorage, Alaska measures approximately 2,000 miles. The moral impact of the Doolittle Raid in response to Pearl Harbor far outweighed the relatively minor material damage it inflicted; Japan lost face and the faith of its people in ultimate victory declined sharply. Americans responded with delight and a fresh upsurge of hope. Despite interrogating the eight American aircrew they captured (and butchering tens of thousands of Chinese civilians in reprisal for assisting the rest in their escape), the Japanese leadership remained divided in their opinions about the bombers' origin. Many believed that the Americans had indeed devised a method of launching such large aircraft from an ordinary aircraft carrier. Many others, however, insisted the B-25s came from a land base, and only the Aleutians lay within a medium bomber's operational range. In any case, Admiral Yamamoto Isoroku planned a move against Midway. Attacking the Aleutians provided an excellent diversion, in his opinion, permitting him time to take Midway and organize land-based strike aircraft there. He could then take his carriers to annihilate America's Pacific Fleet, caught between the Aleutian Islands and Midway. Due to the belief that the Aleutian Islands might support the airfields from which the Doolittle bombers launched, Navy Order Eighteen from Imperial general HQ included a section decreeing "the invasion and occupation of the western Aleutians... in order to ungekürzt. New with index! World War II, the Cold War era, and statehood take hold in the last frontier! The years from 1935 to 1960 changed Alaska forever. World War II brought Japanese bombs and soldiers to the Aleutians, big defense dollars to build a road to the Lower 48, and Russian pilots to fly secret missions out of Fairbanks. The Cold War era saw more folks stream into Alaska. And along with them came a proliferation of TB, a civil rights battle for the Native people, and a struggle to win statehood. Listeners from 9 to 99 will enjoy these short stories that help bring Alaska’s history alive. ungekürzt. Chandler Gray is a sailor and app developer that has created Saga. A virtual AI detective that lives on his phone. The duo embark on an unlikely adventure together across the globe after Gina Lee, a wealthy and glamorous yacht owner, is kidnapped during the famous Swiftsure boat race. Along with a group of friends, the two must work together to track down the missing woman. Their journey leads them far and wide; from piracy in the Aleutians to being attacked in the backwoods of Vancouver Island. Chan stops at nothing to find the truth and is often at odds with Saga’s hilariously sassy attitude. Despite their differences, the duo make an effective team as they drive, sail, and fly along the Northwest Coast; going as far as Alaska on their fierce rescue mission. ungekürzt. Language: English. In 1939, just prior to the start of World War II, the US Lighthouse Service was merged with the United States Coast Guard. After the start of the war, a small group of former lighthouse engineers were instrumental in completing a Top Secret mission to develop, along with M.I.T's Radiation Lab, a brand new technology that would radically improve a ship or plane's ability to navigate with accuracy, called LORAN (Long Range Navigation). This technology is largely credited with turning the tides of battle, and helping secure an Allied victory. This audiobook is a walk, with commentary, through the military records (from 1938 through 1965) of one of the main former-Lighthouse Service engineers involved, Captain Ellis S. Gordon, who was stationed in Alaska from 1943...and was instrumental in developing and activating Loran all over the map, and in particular in the Aleutians. ungekürzt. Language: English.
