Eden Gardens, Calcutta, the 1940s. In a ramshackle house, streets away from the grand colonial mansions of the British, live Maisy, her Mam and their ayah, Pushpa. Whiskey fuelled and poverty stricken, Mam entertains officers in the night - a disgrace to British India. All hopes are on beautiful Maisy to restore their good fortune. But Maisy's more at home in the city's forbidden alleyways, eating bazaar food and speaking Bengali with Pushpa, than dancing in glittering ballrooms with potential husbands. Then one day Maisy's tutor falls ill. His son stands in. Poetic, handsome and ambitious for an independent India, Sunil Banerjee promises Maisy the world. So begins a love affair that will cast her future, for better and for worse. Just as the Second World War strikes and the empire begins to crumble.... This is the other side of British India. A dizzying, scandalous, dangerous world where race, class and gender divide and rule. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jo Woodcock, Bharti Patel. A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of M.M. Kaye’s epic novel of love and war. M.M. Kaye’s masterwork is a vast, rich and vibrant tapestry of love and war that spans over twenty years, moving from the foothills of the Himalayas, to the burning plains, to the besieged British Mission in Kabul. It begins in 1857 when, following the Indian Mutiny, young English orphan Ashton is disguised by his ayah Sita as her Indian son, Ashok. As he forgets his true identity, his destiny is set...A story of divided loyalties and fierce friendship; of true love made impossible by class and race; a critique of the imperialist adventure; and an examination of the cultural and spiritual clash between East and West, ‘The Far Pavilions’ is a searing insight into the human heart. Vineeta Rishi (‘The Last Detective’) stars as Sita and the Narrator, with Blake Ritson as Ashok/Ashton and Ayesha Dharker as Anjuli. Language: English. Narrator: Vineeta Rishi, Blake Ritson, Ayesha Dharker. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/bbcw/004361/bk_bbcw_004361_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

Kipling’s Just So Stories are among the most enduring classic children’s tales. They follow the traditional genre of stories that explain how unusual natural phenomenon came about, often using fantastic and highly magical explanations. Kipling himself was born and spent his very early life in India, and some of the inspiration for these stories comes from traditional tales he heard from his ayah and the family’s other servants. So Kipling’s armadillo arises from the magical fusion of a hedgehog and a tortoise who practice swimming and curling up, respectively, until their shapes modify. The elephant’s trunk is the result of a tussle with a hungry crocodile, and the kangaroo’s shape and ability to jump came about when he was chased by a dingo for an entire day. The rhinoceros gets his loose skin and bad temper from the itching brought about by having cake crumbs under his hide. And the cat who walked by himself explains the independence of cats, which contrasts with the servility of other domesticated animals. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Cathy Dobson. Surah An-Nahl (The Bees) is the 16th chapter (surah) of The Holy Qur'an, with 128 ayah (verse). It is named after honeybees and contains a comparison of the industry and adaptability of honeybees to the industry of man. Regarding the timing and contextual background of the supposed revelation (asbal al-nuzul), it is an earlier "Meccan surah", which means it is believed to have been revealed in Mecca, instead of later in Medina.  This surah warns against polytheism, saying that the pagan gods cannot create anything (Quran 16:20), and against comparisons between Allah SWT (God) and any created beings (Quran 16:74). It praises Allah SWT (God) for giving the Earth with all its wealth to mankind. According to this surah, all wonders of the natural world, like seas, stars, mountains are proofs of God's infinite power (Quran 16:14).  The verse 66 talks about the miracle in milk formation in cattle: "From what is within their bodies, between excretions and blood, We produce for your drink, milk, pure and agreeable to those who drink it." The verse 67 talks about miracle of vine: "And from the fruit of the date-palm and the vine, ye get out strong drink and wholesome food: behold, in this also is a sign for those who are wise". ungekürzt. The actress Isla Blair’s extraordinary, moving and uplifting story of her childhood in India and her separation from her parents. Born in Bangalore India, during the fading days of the Raj, Isla grew up on a tea plantation managed by her father. She spent her early years in the lush, verdant hills of Kerala with her much loved older sister Fiona, secure in the love and affection of her parents and her adored “Ayah”. This warm, spice-scented idyll was abruptly ended when, obliged by tradition and entirely believing they were doing the best for their daughters, her parents sent Isla and her sister “home” to boarding school. She was not quite six years old. But “home” was cold, gloomy, post-war austerity Scotland – a land of liberty bodices, chilblains, icy mornings and dank, drizzly days; an alien land where for several years she nursed an astonishing secret – of which only Fiona was aware. Isla Blair writes lyrically of her beloved India, stoically of term times in Spartan English boarding schools and holidays with grandparents and with great humour and vivacity of the time after school when she became one of the youngest students at RADA, training alongside Anthony Hopkins and others and throwing herself fully into life in London in the swinging ‘60s. ungekürzt.
