Die Erhabenheit von Landschafts- und Natureindrücken sind es, die Crumbs Landsfrau Augusta Read Thomas in ihrem Orchesterstück »Words of the Sea« sublim in Szene setzt. Und »Réveil des oiseaux« des Franzosen Olivier Messiaen ist gleichsam von der Natur selbst komponiert. Für Klavier und ein kleines Ensemble geschrieben, hat es einen ganz einzigartigen Klang und Charakter. Sein musikalisches Material stammt von exotischen Vögeln, deren Rufsignale im Klavierpart wie im Ensemble ertönen. »Orion« von Claude Vivier verweist schließlich schon mit seinem Titel auf das ganze Universum, einen immerwährenden Inspirationsquell des kanadischen Komponisten, der davon ausging, dass die »inneren Räume« des Menschen ein Spiegelbild des Alls darstellen. Written for piano and a small ensemble, it has a very unique sound and character.
