Bernard Lewis examines the historical roots of the frustrations and resentments that dominate the Islamic world today and that are increasingly being expressed in acts of terrorism. He looks at the theological origins of political Islam and tells us what the Islamic doctrine of jihad has meant at different times in history. And he takes us, as only he can, through the rise of militant Islam in Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, examining the impact of radical Wahabi proselytizing and Saudi oil money on the rest of the Islamic world. Crisis of Islam ranges widely through 13 centuries of history, but in particular it charts the key events of the 20th century leading up to the bitter and violent confrontations of today. The Second World War, the creation of the state of Israel, the Cold War, the Iranian Revolution, the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan, the Gulf War, and the September 11th attacks on the United States have all shaped Muslim perceptions in important ways. While hostility toward the West has a long and varied history in the lands of Islam, its current concentration on America is new. So too is the cult of the suicide bomber. Bernard Lewis helps us understand the reasons for the increasingly dogmatic rejection of modernity by many in the Muslim world in favor of a return to a sacred past. Based on his George Polk Award-winning article for The New Yorker, The Crisis of Islam is essential reading for anyone who wants to know what Osama bin Ladin represents and why his murderous message resonates so widely in the Islamic world. A fulfilled and at the same time an endless dream is the focus of Susy Rottonara' s new album Dreaming of Fanes, that contains the Musical Poem Fanes and the multi-award winning music Le Rëgn de Fanes, both describing the magic atmospheres of the legend of the Reign of Fanes - the most important inheritance in Ladin oral literature (Ladin is the most ancient alpine language yet spoken today by the Ladin minority Susy Rottonara belongs to)- bound to the wild nature of the Dolomites mountains, recently declared "world natural heritage" by the UNESCO. As a child Susy Rottonara dreams of interpreting princess Dolasila -the protagonist of the legend- and her dream is fulfilled as she succeeds in playing the role of the princess in the Ladin movie Le Rëgn de Fanes, where she also writes the screenplay together with the director and sings the film music she herself has composed. This music has been awarded with the first prize at Renderyard Film Festival 2007 in London and at Garden State Film Festival 2008 in Asbury Park (NJ) and the film with five awards at the Los Angeles Reel Film Festival 2009. In the album Susy Rottonara' s soprano voice tells in Ladin language the mythic happenings described in the lyrics of the Musical Poem Fanes by Roland Verra about the fall of the peacefully people of Fanes caused by the longing for increasing power of the last king of Fanes, who forces his daughter, princess Dolasila, to fight against the neighbour people with bewitched weapons. Wicked supernatural figures like the sorcerer Spina de Mul make enchantments in the dark, opposing the harmony with the nature represented by the Queen of Fanes and the Ganes (nymphs) who protect the reign and make everything seem a memory lost in a dream. Susy Rottonara dreams both of telling the legend and of being part of it, so that the many sung parts without words represent the mysterious voice of the female supernatural figures of the legend, of princess Dolasila and of the Ganes. The album is meant to present the legend of Fanes as the soul of the Dolomites mountains in an experimental style where music is not just to be heard but also to be "seen" in an endless dream. The music shows the constant research of a particular style bound to the nature of the Dolomites' mountains as guardians of ancient myths, where the perception of rhythm and sound is freed from conventional time and finds in the dimension of dream it's privileged reality.
