    Für Marisha Pessl, seit ihrem Debüt „Die alltägliche Physik des Unglücks“ in den USA als literarisches Wunderkind gefeiert, ist ganz klar, welche Art von Büchern sie schreibt: „Die, die ich selber gern lesen würde.“ Sie liebt es anscheinend düster und anspruchsvoll – und bittet in ihrem neuen Buch „Die amerikanische Nacht“ zu einer literarischen Reise, in der Wahn (?) und Wirklichkeit miteinander verschmelzen. Eine Welt zwischen Lynchs „Mulholland Drive“ und Kubricks „Eyes Wide Shut“ – um nur zwei Assoziationen unter vielen zu nennen – öffnet sich auf mehr als 700 Seiten, eine Reise zu guter Hexerei und schwarzer Magie, zu geheimen (Sex-)Clubs, Teufelsriten und traumatisch anmutenden Filmsets des kultisch verehrten Regisseurs Cordova. Er ist Dreh- und Angelpunkt des Buches, lebt zurückgezogen, niemand weiß genau, ob er überhaupt noch existiert, doch seine exzessiven Filme, dark movies, kursieren nach wie vor … Den Text in „Die amerikanische Nacht“ begleiten übrigens u. a. Die Geschichte: Scott McGrath, Journalist, ist besessen von Cordova. Der Regisseur hat vor Jahren seine Karriere ruiniert. Scott ist sich sicher, dass Cordova verhindern wollte, dass er weiter über den Filmemacher recherchiert. Als Cordovas Tochter Ashley Selbstmord begeht, setzt Scott McGrath alles daran, die Wahrheit über den Tod Ashleys herauszufinden. Scott ist überzeugt davon, dass Cordova böse ist, etwas mit dem Tod von Kindern zu tun hat und sieht in ihm einen Psychopathen und Menschenmanipulierer übelster Sorte. So macht sich der Journalist erneut auf zu einer Erkundungsreise in eine dunkle Welt. Ihm zur Seite hat Autorin Marisha Pessl zwei junge Helden gestellt: die angehende Schauspielerin Nora und Hopper, einen jungen und meist betrunkenen Kerl, der Ashley von einem Psychocamp für durchgeknallte Jugendliche kennt. So fängt alles an – und mit jedem Puzzleteil, das Scott, Nora und Hopper über den Tod und das Leben von Ashley finden, verstricken sie sich tiefer in einen dunklen Sog, der von Cordova auszugehen scheint. Es fühlt sich so an, als wären alle Geister der Nacht entfesselt worden durch Scotts Entscheidung, den Tod Ashleys aufzuklären. Geister, die nun alles daransetzen, dass Scott, Nora und Hopper damit scheitern. Natürlich glaubt Scott nicht an Hokuspokus – und verliert dennoch nach und nach die Kontrolle. Was passiert wirklich und was nur in seinem Kopf? Was ist Imagination und was Realität? Hat Cordova auf seinem Landsitz dem Teufelskult gehuldigt und seine Tochter dem Gehörnten geweiht? Wollte Ashley sich mit schwarzer Magie vor schwarzer Magie schützen oder war sie gar nicht die arme Verfolgte, für die sie Scott hält? Das Trio stolpert durch ein New York, an dem zwar an jeder Ecke ein Starbucks steht, aber sich der Raum scheinbar krümmt, das Licht langsamer wird, je näher man Cordova kommt, und Informationen durcheinandergeraten, rationale Köpfe unlogisch werden. „Man versucht, nach etwas ganz Nahem zu greifen und stellt fest, dass es niemals da war.“ Auch die Entscheidung, zum Landwohnsitz Cordovas zu fahren – wo er sich angeblich aufhalten soll – bringt noch mehr Verwirrung. Marisha Pessl lässt Scott hier in eine Parallelwelt stürzen; er landet, scheinbar auf Drogen, in den Filmkulissen Cordovas, verfolgt von unbestimmten Wächtern. Ein monströser Alptraum, der real zu sein scheint, den Scott aber überlebt. Irgendwann wacht er auf und ist – natürlich – keinen Schritt weiter. Aber er gibt nicht auf und wird – so viel darf man verraten – am Ende doch noch fündig werden … Marisha Pessl hat diesen literarischen Film noir mit unzähligen Anspielungen auf Bücher, Filme, Musik gespickt. Dass es ihr gelingt, die Leser mitzunehmen auf diesen dunklen Tauchgang und wir, genau wie Scott, Nora oder Hopper, nicht mehr wissen, was wir nun glauben sollen, rätseln, was Realität und was (Alp-)Traum ist, spricht für ihr Können als Schriftstellerin. Spannend und anspruchsvoll ist es allemal, einlassen allerdings muss man sich darauf. Dann wird vielleicht auch dieser Satz aus dem Buch wahr: „Man öffnete die Augen für das Brutale und Dunkle und Großartige des Lebens und besiegte so die Ungeheuer im eigenen Kopf.“
