The New Organon , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 515min
The New Organon is the second part of Bacon's philosophical work, The Great Instauration on the renewal of the sciences, which was published in 1620. The title refers to Aristotle's work Organon - meaning “trumpeter” - a treatise on logic and syllogism. Bacon’s work offers a new method of investigating nature, named “the Interpretation of Nature”. In The New Organon, he sets out this system of logic based on induction, which he believes to be superior to the old method of syllogism. Induction begins with the facts of nature and works slowly towards general axioms or propositions, by building up tables of comparison. The use of experiments assists the senses in this process. The next stage is the consideration of privileged instances which assist the process in terms of information or of practice. Today, this is known as the Baconian method. ungekürzt. Language: English. Tools of Thinking: Understanding the World Through Experience and Reason, Hörbuch, Digital, 717min
Everyone has to think in order to function in the world, but what is the best way to reason effectively in your pursuit of reliable beliefs and useful knowledge? What is the best way to prove a case, create a rule, solve a problem, justify an idea, invent a hypothesis, or evaluate an argument? In short, what is the best way to think? Professor Hall helps you cut through deception and faulty reasoning in these 24 humorous, clear, and interesting lectures, offering a friendly but intellectually rigorous approach to the problem of thinking. Among the topics you'll learn about are: Deduction (this form of reasoning reaches a conclusion based on a set of premises; if the premises are true, then the conclusion necessarily follows) Induction (less ironclad than deduction, this approach surveys the evidence and then generalizes an explanation to account for it; the conclusion may be probable, but it is not certain) Syllogism (this simple but powerful deductive argument offers two premises and a conclusion, e.g., "All Greeks are mortals. All Athenians are Greeks. Therefore, all Athenians are mortals.") Dialectic (a question-and-answer dialogue, called dialectic, is valuable for uncovering first principles) Venn diagrams (this technique uses overlapping circles to represent different classes of objects or ideas in order to clarify a syllogism) Some of the greatest philosophers who ever lived have used these tools to separate ideas that make sense from those that don't. Now you, too, can think more clearly, making better lives for ourselves and for those to come. Rhetoric, Poetics and Logic , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 808min
Aristotle's contribution to the sum of wisdom dominates all our philosophy and even provides direction for much of our science. And all effective debaters, whether they know it or not, employ Aristotle's 3 basic principles of effective argument that form the spine of Rhetoric: "ethos," the impact of the speaker's character upon the audience; "pathos," the arousing of the emotions; and "logos," the advancement of pertinent arguments. In Poetics, Aristotle observes several aspects of epic poetry, lyric poetry, and comedy, and he draws a dramatic distinction between poetry and history. He maintains that poetry has greater philosophical value because it deals with universals, while history states particular facts. Aristotle's body of work that has come to be identified as Logic includes: classification into 10 categories; proposition; syllogism; and inductive and deductive reasoning. ungekürzt. Organon , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1365min
Aristotle’s Organon comprises six key essays on logic, initially collected by Theophrastus, his successor as head of the Peripatetic school, and given its final form by Andronicus some three centuries later. The six essays are: Categories, On Interpretation, Prior Analytics, Posterior Analytics, Topics and On Sophistical Refutations. One of the principal topics of Aristotle’s focus is syllogism, in which two premises (one major, one minor) lead to a conclusion. This features in Prior Analytics and On Interpretation. In the other essays, Aristotle considers the structure of being, knowledge and argument. The Organon collection has remained a core text in the study of logic and prompted many commentaries by philosophers down the ages following their translation from Greek into Latin in the 12th century. The translations here are by E. M Edghill, A. J. Jenkinson, G. R. G Mure and W. A. Pickard-Cambridge. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Peter Noble.
