Presents a critical overview of guru succession in the Radhasoami tradition from its inception in the mid-1850s up until early 1991. Provides vital information for anyone interested in the politics behind guru succession in general. Includes extensive notes and an exhaustive bibliography. Focuses specifically on the development of gurus in the Agra and Beas' branches and includes information on lesser known gurus and movements, including Faqir Chand and Manavta Mandir. Central Issue: On August 24, 1974, Kirpal Singh, a renowned guru of surat shabd yoga and founder of Ruhani Satsang, died at the age of 80. His death caused an intense succession dispute amongst his thousands of followers that has yet to be mended. Eventually a number of factions developed, each following a different successor. Although most of Kirpal Singh's followers rallied around Darshan Singh, Kirpal's son, others paid allegiance to either Thakar Singh of Delhi or Ajaib Singh of Rajasthan. The interesting sociological question that confronts us here is how each successor to Kirpal Singh legitimized his role. That is, what type of ideological strategy did these would-be gurus develop in order to solidify their constituencies? Further, what were the social and historical factors that influenced or constrained their rhetoric? To properly address and answer these questions necessitates a fairly comprehensive overview of the social context in which these yoga gurus live and teach. Thus, this study begins with a historical overview of Sant mat and Radhasoami in general. And secondly, I have focused on the specific guru lineage that preceded Kirpal Singh and his successors. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Paul Stefano. Can you ever really recover from posttraumatic stress (PTSD)? Psychotherapist, guided imagery pioneer, and trauma expert Belleruth Naparstek says yes, and has the research to prove it. Her powerfully transformative guided meditations were found in four different clinical studies to significantly lower all three clusters of PTS symptoms by six weeks of regular listening, reducing flashbacks, nightmares, isolation, numbing, fear, shame, cynicism, and anger, while restoring a sense of inner goodness, hope, self-esteem, and meaning - all just over the course of eight weeks of regular listening. Naparstek, the author of the award-winning book, Invisible Heroes: Survivors of Trauma and How They Heal, combines this physiologically balancing, psychologically sophisticated, and spiritually inspiring guided narrative with the exquisite scoring of Steven Mark Kohn's music, to deliver a depth charge of healing to survivors of combat and military sexual trauma, childhood abuse, motor vehicle accidents, criminal assault, domestic violence, natural disasters, ICU stays, and traumatic hospital experiences. A separate track of affirmations bolsters the healing process with quick, positive reminders in a briefer format, which can be heard and enjoyed while engaged in other activities, including driving. Another track of the music alone helps to integrate and solidify the deep inner gains achieved through the other two tracks, and ensure they last. Designed for use as a supportive supplement to other treatment approaches for PTSD, or as a stand-alone intervention, this ground breaking program is recommended and distributed by the US Veterans Administration, Kaiser Permanente, The Red Cross, the US Army, and hundreds of hospitals and treatment centers nationwide. Languages of Truth offers Salman Rushdie's most piercingly analytical views yet on the evolution of literature and culture even as he takes us deep into his own exuberant and fearless imagination Salman Rushdie is celebrated as a storyteller of the highest order, illuminating deep truths about our society and culture through his gorgeous, often searing, prose. Now, in his latest collection of nonfiction, he brings together insightful and inspiring essays, criticism, and speeches that focus on his relationship with the written word, and solidify his place as one of the most original thinkers of our time. Gathering pieces written between 2003 and 2020, Languages of Truth chronicles Rushdie's own intellectual engagement with a period of momentous cultural shifts. Immersing the reader in a wide variety of subjects, he delves into the nature of storytelling as a deeply human need, and what emerges is, in myriad ways, a love letter to literature itself. Rushdie explores what the work of authors from Shakespeare and Cervantes to Samuel Beckett, Eudora Welty, and Toni Morrison mean to him, often by telling vivid, sometimes humorous stories of his own personal encounters with them, whether on the page or in person. He delves deeper than ever before into the nature of "truth," revels in the vibrant malleability of language, and the creative lines that can join art and life, and he looks anew at migration, multiculturalism and censorship. The ideas, true stories, and arguments presented here are at once revelatory, funny, and eye-opening, enlivened on every page by Rushdie's signature wit and dazzling voice, making this volume a genuine pleasure to read.

Celebrates the resilience of American cultural institutions in the face of national crises and challengesOn an afternoon in January 1865, a roaring fire swept through the Smithsonian Institution. Dazed soldiers and worried citizens could only watch as the flames engulfed the museum's castle. Rare objects and valuable paintings were destroyed. The flames at the Smithsonian were not the first-and certainly would not be the last- disaster to upend a museum in the United States. Beset by challenges ranging from pandemic and war to fire and economic uncertainty, museums have sought ways to emerge from crisis periods stronger than before, occasionally carving important new paths forward in the process. The Museum explores the concepts of "crisis" as it relates to museums, and how these historic institutions have dealt with challenges ranging from depression and war to pandemic and philosophical uncertainty. Fires, floods, and hurricanes have all upended museum plans and forced people to ask difficult questions about American cultural life. With chapters exploring World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, the Great Depression, World War II, the 1970 Art Strike in New York City, and recent controversies in American museums, this book takes a new approach to understanding museum history. By diving deeper into the changes that emerged from these key challenges, Samuel J. Redman argues that cultural institutions can-and should- use their history to prepare for challenges and solidify their identity going forward. A captivating examination of crisis moments in US museum history from the early years of the twentieth century to the present day, The Museum offers inspiration in the resilience and longevity of America's most prized cultural institutions.

""Based on impressive multi-archival work and a keen sense for a good narrative, the author introduces us to the complex, interlocking networks of the littleknown Atlantik-Brücke and the American Council on Germany. A fantastic addition to our understanding of the 'Transnational Transatlantic' in the 20th century"- Giles Scott-Smith, Roosevelt Chair in New Diplomatic History, Leiden University, The Netherlands"An original and insightful book exploring how two transatlantic networks worked to improve and solidify West Germany's relationship with the United States in the aftermath of World War II- transnational history at its best."- Deborah Barton, Assistant Professor of History, University of Montreal, CanadaRevisiting the relationship between the USA and Germany following the Second World War, this book offers a new perspective and focuses on the influence of two organisations in accelerating West Germany's integration into the Atlantic Alliance. Tracing the Atlantik-Brücke and the American Council on Germany's (ACG) origins to the late 1940s and tracking their development and activities throughout the 1950s-70s, this book covers new ground in German-American historiography by bridging public and private relations and introducing central actors that have previously been hidden from academic debate. The author unveils and examines dense transatlantic elite networks that allowed Germany to re-join the 'community of nations,' regain sovereignty, and become a trusted member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). Analysing transatlantic relations through the lens of the intertwined history of the Atlantik-Brücke and the ACG, this book explores public-private networks on a transnational level, providing valuable reading for those studying political history, European and American post-war relations and the Cold War.

In 1921, Tulsa’s Greenwood District - known then as the nation’s “Black Wall Street” - was one of the most prosperous African American communities in the United States. But on May 31 of that year, a white mob, inflamed by rumors that a young black man had attempted to rape a white teenage girl, invaded Greenwood. By the end of the following day, thousands of homes and businesses lay in ashes, and perhaps, as many as 300 people were dead. With the clarity and descriptive power of a veteran journalist, author Randy Krehbiel digs deep into the events and their aftermath and investigates decades-old questions about the local culture at the root of what one writer has called "a white-led pogrom".Krehbiel analyzes local newspaper accounts in an unprecedented effort to gain insight into the minds of contemporary Tulsans. In the process, he considers how the Tulsa World, the Tulsa Tribune, and other publications contributed to the circumstances that led to the disaster and helped solidify enduring white justifications for it. In its wake, black Tulsans were denied redress and even the right to rebuild on their own property, yet they ultimately prevailed and even prospered, despite systemic racism and the rise during the 1920s of the second Ku Klux Klan. The book is published by University of Oklahoma Press. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks.Praise for the book:"The best book on the Tulsa tragedy of 1921 to come out in the past twenty years, or possibly ever." (Alfred L. Brophy, author of Reconstructing the Dreamland: The Tulsa Riot of 1921 - Race, Reparations, and Reconciliation) ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kevin Meyer.
