Whispering Quilts: A Slave’s Journey of Hope, Struggle, and Freedom , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 123min
In December of 1606, three ships carrying the first permanent English settlers in America - 105 in all - headed for the British colony of Virginia. Approximately four months later, on April 26, 1607, they sailed into the Chesapeake Bay, finally arriving at a peninsular in the James River; there, the pioneer colonists disembarked. They named the settlement they established in the area, James Towne.Twelve years later, in August of 1619, a ship carrying about 50 Africans, stolen from their homes and villages, arrived at the settlement; more than 20 of these wretched souls were left behind, sold into slavery.By the time a young African girl - barely 12 or 13 years old - was stolen, transported to America, and sold or traded into slavery in the late 18th century, the transatlantic slave trade had been operating for over 180 years. The child was brought to America, sold to a South Carolinian rice planter and renamed Charlotte. She is forced to become a breeder, eventually dying in childbirth. Half a century later, after witnessing the savage flogging and slow murder of a runaway slave whose attempt at escape was unsuccessful, Charlotte’s progeny attempt to escape the brutality of slavery to freedom in Canada with the help of White abolitionists and free Blacks. Their lives depend on reading and interpreting coded messages hidden in patterns stitched into quilts. Failure is not an option, but the dangers are many and ever-present. Will they make it to Canada? The story is narrated by 88-year-old Thomas, the grandson of the slave girl, Charlotte, and passed down through successive generations. It is not until much later, in the 21st century, that Charlotte’s identity is revealed through the magic of DNA testing. This exciting and educational historical fiction story is rooted in actual historical events and is sure to inspire thoughtful discussions about this period of American history; it is suitable listening for history lovers, as well ungekürzt. Mark of the Apple: Chapter 1: Coding Humans, Book 11 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 19min
Between 1900 and the year 2020, the Earth’s equator had begun to displace. The displacement was due to massive relocations of cement, water, and other materials. These materials were mainly accumulated in densely populated areas such as the Middle East and China. The collection of such mass caused Earth’s moment of inertia to alter, resulting in a change of angular momentum, which ultimately repositioned Earth’s alignment with the sun. This repositioning slowly put the continents into different geographical coordinates. The result was devastating to the whole planet. In a single day, the Earth rotated approximately 25 percent south to north, leaving the lateral coordinates of Wisconsin to land where Texas once was. Most of the population on Earth died off, leaving the northernmost parts of the Americas as the prime location to live on the planet. After “the Slip” occurred, and the atmosphere cleared up, Madison, WI, developed into the premier city to reside in. It also became the center of the US national government. The former capitol of Madison was renamed the Whitehouse after the protective dome was deactivated. The majority of the world and its existing survivors outside of the dome region is unknown. The not so natural disaster had wiped out more than 80 percent of the population, leaving a blended race of people consisting mostly of females. The human race is only now beginning to gain back their population, making sure to be ever so careful about excessive waste and unnecessary mass productions, particularly for the purpose of profit. The modern humanoid strives for the pursuit of knowledge - not material possession.Money has since gone the way of the dinosaurs for many young adults, and teens yet remain a defining factor in society amongst adults. Around the time of the COVID-19 and COVID-20 viral outbreaks, the great corporate battles had begun. A battle fought in secret and won by genocide. A war that left Apple Corp as th ungekürzt. Rose of Lima is a very important saint; you’ve got to know all there is to know about her. Her great-grandmother was reported to have been of the Inca culture. The Incas were not dark-skinned like the Aztec or the American Indian. They were white-skinned. The children born of Spanish and Inca unions were usually breathtakingly beautiful. Rose was a stunning, very fair child with light brown hair. She was part of a trio of powerful men and women in the Church of the early days of Peru.St. Martin de Porres and St. Toribio de Mongrevo, archbishop of Lima, were both from the same time period, and from the same city - Lima, Peru. Alien: River of Pain: An Audible Original Drama, Hörbuch, Digital, 292min
Ellen Ripley finally returns to Earth, only to discover that LV-426 — where the crew of the Nostromo first came into contact with the deadly xenomorphs — has been renamed Acheron. Protected by Colonial Marines, the colonists seek to terraform the storm-swept planet against all the odds. But in the face of brutal living conditions and the daily struggles of a new world, there is humanity and hope. Anne and Russell Jorden — two colonists who are seeking a fortune that eluded them on Earth — are expecting their firstborn child. The birth of Rebecca Jorden, known to her family as Newt, is a cause for celebration. But as the colony grows and expands, so, too, do the political struggles between a small detachment of Colonial Marines and the Weyland-Yutani scientists posted on Acheron. Willing to overlook their orders in order to serve the Company's interests, these scientists have another far more sinister agenda — to covertly capture a living Alien. The wildcatters discover a vast, decaying spaceship. The horseshoe-shaped vessel is of particular interest to Weyland-Yutani and may be the answer to their dreams. But what Anne and Russell find onboard proves to be the stuff not of dreams but of nightmares. Lest We Forget: A Personal Reflection on the Formation of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 237min
Robert King Churchill was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, on September 11, 1903. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States during his first year as a student at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1936, he graduated from that institution and soon thereafter, was one of a group of young men ordained to the gospel ministry by the First General Assembly of the newly formed Presbyterian Church of America (later renamed The Orthodox Presbyterian Church). He served in that church until the time of his sudden death on September 20, 1980.Mr. Churchill labored as missionary/pastor in Berkeley and Sonora, California; Roswell, New Mexico, and Amarillo, Texas. He pastored Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, from 1948 to 1959. He was always interested in young people and conducted off-campus classes with university students during his years at Berkeley. He was also active in working with young people at various camps and conferences. He served on the Board of Trustees of Westminster Seminary for more than thirty years and represented the seminary for almost two years as Field Representative. In heart and life, Bob echoed the cry of the apostle: "Woe is me if I preach not the gospel." He delighted unceasingly in the "Marvelous grace of our loving Lord...grace that is greater than all our sin." He was zealous for the whole counsel of God and had to proclaim it. But his awe before the majesty of our sovereign God did not stop at the wonders of redeeming grace: He heard the heavens declare the glory of God and reveled in the display of his handiwork in nature - in ocean, clouds, trees, hills, the green earth, and its fruit. He heard the whole creation shouting, "glory!" But most of all, he rejoiced in the songs of Zion and loved to lead the people of God in singing his praises. ungekürzt. Language: English. Nicotine , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 655min
From the much acclaimed author of Mislaid and The Wallcreeper, a fierce and audaciously funny novel of families, both the ones we're born into and the ones we create - a story of obsession, idealism and ownership, centered around a young woman who inherits her bohemian late father's childhood home. Recent business school graduate Penny Baker has rebelled against her family her whole life - by being the conventional one. Her mother, Amalia, was a member of a South American tribe called the Kogi; her much older father, Norm, long ago attained cultlike deity status among a certain cohort of ageing hippies while operating a psychedelic 'healing centre'. And she's never felt particularly close to her much older half brothers from Norm's previous marriage - one wickedly charming and obscenely rich (but mostly just wicked), one a photographer on a distant tropical island. But all that changes when her father dies, and Penny inherits his childhood home in New Jersey. She goes to investigate the property and finds it not overgrown and abandoned but rather occupied by a group of friendly anarchist squatters whom she finds unexpectedly charming and who have renamed the property Nicotine. The Nicotine residents (united in defence of smokers' rights) possess the type of passion and fervour Penny feels she's desperately lacking, and the other squatter houses in the neighbourhood provide a sense of community she has never felt before. She soon moves into a nearby residence, becoming enmeshed in the political fervour and commitment of her fellow squatters. As the Baker family's lives begin to converge around the fate of the house now called Nicotine, Penny grows ever bolder and more desperate to protect it - and its residents - until a fateful night when a reckless confrontation between her old family and her new one changes everything. Nell Zink exquisitely captures the clash between baby boomer idealism and millennial pragm ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Cassandra Campbell. The Japanese Invasion of Manchuria and the Rape of Nanking: The History of the Most Notorious Events of the Second Sino-Japanese War , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 158min
Though scarcely mentioned in the world of early 21st century politics, Manchuria represented a key region of Asia during the first half of the 20th century. Once the heartland of the fierce Manchu empire, this northeastern Chinese region's rich natural resources made it a prize for nations in the process of entering the modern age, and three ambitious nations in the midst of such a transformation lay close enough to Manchuria to attempt to claim it: Japan, Russia, and China. For countries attempting to shake off their feudal past and enter a dynamic era of industrialization, Manchuria's resources presented an irresistible lure. With immense natural resources coupled to economic activity more concentrated than elsewhere in China, this region, abutting Mongolia, Korea, the Yellow Sea, and the Great Wall "accounted for 90 percent of China’s oil, 70 percent of its iron, 55 percent of its gold, and 33 percent of its trade. If Shanghai remained China’s commercial center, by 1931 Manchuria had become its industrial center." (Paine, 2012, 15). Thus, it's not altogether surprising that Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931 resulted from a long, complex chain of historical events stretching back to the late 19th century. Approximately 380,000 square miles in extent, or 1.4 times the size of the American state of Texas, Manchuria came into Imperial Russia's possession in 1900 due to the Boxer Rebellion in China, but the Russians held it only briefly; their defeat in the Russo-Japanese War shook loose their control from important parts of Manchuria by the end of 1905. The Japanese gained two important footholds in Manchuria thanks to their victory. One consisted of Port Arthur (renamed Ryojun by the Japanese), an economically and strategically vital harbor city on the Liaodung Peninsula, plus the peninsula itself. The other comprised the South Manchurian Railway, which the Russians gave to the Japanese as a prize of war, in lieu of a cash indemnity ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. 1917 - A Short Story: In the Shadows , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 29min
In the summer of 1914, the world erupted in what was at the time called The Great War. Machine guns, multi-ton bombs, poison gas, changed the face what war had been like for thousands of years. Rendered it a hell like nothing the world had ever seen. In a single battle, The Somme 1916, over a million soldiers were killed or wounded. By the time it ended four years and four months later more than 16 million people lay dead, empires collapsed and national borders had been realigned. It was thought that after such inhumane cruelty and barbarity as was seen on the battlefields of France, Belgium, Turkey, and other lands spanning the globe, that the world had come its senses. That humanity had finally fought The War to End All Wars. A short generation later The War to End All Wars was renamed, World War One. Because mankind had apparently learned nothing. This short story is not a history. It is not a precise representation of facts, places, dates, or large-scale events. It is merely the story of the First World War through the eyes of an innocent 19-year-old Canadian boy from the prairies of Alberta. He and the youthful soldiers with him had no concept of the scale of what they were involved in, no clue as to what lay in the heads of the generals and politicians that sent the orders down. He didn't read the newspapers, didn't philosophize on the meaning of it all. He had no "big picture" as the history books paint for us today. All he understood was that he had to obey his orders and stop the Hun. The only picture he saw was one of mud and sweat and rats and blood. He was a soldier whose orders had called his unit out of the comforts of Paris, and sent them to a field near a little Belgian town called Paschendale. ungekürzt. Language: English.
