Oliver Hazard Perry and Matthew C. Perry: The Lives and Careers of the Brothers Who Became Legendary U.S. Navy Officers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 168min
We have met the enemy and they are ours.” (Oliver Hazard Perry)The Japanese are remarkable for their inordinate curiosity.” (Commodore Matthew Perry)Americans had few things to celebrate during the War of 1812, and fighting on the frontier against the British and their native allies didn’t go any better than the conflict did in other theaters, but one of the only major victories the Americans won came at the Battle of Lake Erie in September 1813. That action made Oliver Hazard Perry, a veteran of the Barbary Wars and commander of the USS Lawrence, a legend whose name has endured for over 200 years. Perry was so instrumental in the victory that British historian C.S. Forester noted “it was as fortunate for the Americans that the Lawrence still possessed a boat that would float, as it was that Perry was not hit." As one of the biggest naval battles of the war, the results meant that America maintained control of Lake Erie, an important location from which they could recover Detroit and be better positioned to confront the British and Shawnee leader Tecumseh’s confederacy. For his part, Perry would forever be remembered as the “Hero of Lake Erie,” even as he and compatriot Captain Jesse Elliot would feud over their respective actions during the battle for the rest of Perry’s life.On July 8, 1853, U.S. Navy Commodore Matthew Perry led four American warships into Uraga Harbor near Edo (later renamed Tokyo), presenting the Japanese with a letter from President Millard Fillmore. The Japanese couldn’t know they were at the end of their long withdrawal from the rest of the world, but they were quite aware that the conditions in China and in Asia generally were being forced to change. Perry remains a fairly familiar name in America as a result of his time in Asia, but that legacy actually belies just how influential he was for the U.S. Navy back at home. He is still known as the “Father of the Steam Navy” in America. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gregory T. Luzitano. Future Home of the Living God: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 644min
Louise Erdrich, the New York Times best-selling, National Book Award-winning author of LaRose and The Round House, paints a startling portrait of a young woman fighting for her life and her unborn child against oppressive forces that manifest in the wake of a cataclysmic event. The world as we know it is ending. Evolution has reversed itself, affecting every living creature on earth. Science cannot stop the world from running backward, as woman after woman gives birth to infants that appear to be primitive species of humans. Thirty-two-year-old Cedar Hawk Songmaker, adopted daughter of a pair of big-hearted, open-minded Minneapolis liberals, is as disturbed and uncertain as the rest of America around her. But for Cedar, this change is profound and deeply personal. She is four months pregnant. Though she wants to tell the adoptive parents who raised her from infancy, Cedar first feels compelled to find her birth mother, Mary Potts, an Ojibwe living on the reservation, to understand both her and her baby's origins. As Cedar goes back to her own biological beginnings, society around her begins to disintegrate, fueled by a swelling panic about the end of humanity. There are rumors of martial law, of Congress confining pregnant women. Of a registry, and rewards for those who turn these wanted women in. Flickering through the chaos are signs of increasing repression: a shaken Cedar witnesses a family wrenched apart when police violently drag a mother from her husband and child in a parking lot. The streets of her neighborhood have been renamed with Bible verses. A stranger answers the phone when she calls her adoptive parents, who have vanished without a trace. It will take all Cedar has to avoid the prying eyes of potential informants and keep her baby safe. A chilling dystopian novel both provocative and prescient, Future Home of the Living God is a startlingly original work from one of our most acclaimed wr ungekürzt. Language: English. The Works of Edgar Allan Poe - Volume 1
The Works of Edgar Allan Poe - Volume 1 By Edgar Allan PoeEdgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 - October 7, 1849) was an American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in the United States and of American literature as a whole, and he was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story. He is also generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. Poe was the first well-known American writer to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.Poe was born in Boston, the second child of actors David and Elizabeth "Eliza" Poe. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia. They never formally adopted him, but he was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as Poe and John Allan repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of Poe's education. Poe attended the University of Virginia but left after a year due to lack of money. He quarreled with Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the United States Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time that his publishing career began with the anonymous collection Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". Poe and Allan reached a temporary rapprochement after the death of Allan's wife in 1829. Poe later failed as an officer cadet at West Point, declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, and he ultimately parted ways with Allan.Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several years working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. His work forced him to move among several cities, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. He married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm, in 1836, but Virginia died of tuberculosis in 1847. In January 1845, Poe published his poem "The Raven" to instant success. He planned for years to produce his own journal The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), but before it could be produced, he died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, at age 40.- Shop: buecher

Commodore Matthew Perry: The Life and Legacy of the U.S. Navy Officer Who Opened Japan to the West , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 101min
The Japanese are remarkable for their inordinate curiosity.” (Commodore Matthew Perry) During the 19th century, Japan severely limited contact with the rest of the world, although it was not the total isolation sometimes presumed. The government was quite aware of what was happening in the rest of the world. The Japanese also left a window open to Europe, in the form of a small and highly restricted Dutch presence on an artificial island in Nagasaki harbor - a presence that lasted more than 200 years. Courtesy of the Dutch, the Japanese were aware of contemporary events in Europe, along with the rest of the world, and they were also aware of the scientific and technological progress, although whether this resulted in any practical applications is hard to establish. The Japanese stayed out of the chaos in China as the Ming dynasty collapsed, but on July 8, 1853, US Navy Commodore Matthew Perry led four American warships into Uraga Harbor near Edo (later renamed Tokyo), presenting the Japanese with a letter from President Millard Fillmore. The Japanese couldn’t know they were at the end of their long withdrawal from the rest of the world, but they were quite aware that the conditions in China and in Asia generally were being forced to change. They were also certainly aware that the Americans, as a result of the Gold Rush, had made California a state (in 1852) and extended the United States to the Pacific Ocean. They were also aware that American ships dominated the Pacific whaling industry, and that they commonly sailed to China.Japan was further aware of the British and French colonial incursions into China, and they were looking across the Sea of Japan where the Russians were actively occupying territory that was uncomfortably close to Japan. Thus, the appearance of an American naval force was obviously ominous.Perry’s 1853 flotilla included two sailing ships and two steamships, and Perry returned in February 1854. 1. Dan's Hands/The Pipefitters Jig/The Niagara/Convey's Reel/Jigs. English/Irish Caitriona's Fancy by Dan Hands already appears on the CD, 'The Twilight Shift' by Steamradio the folk/rock outfit featuring myself on Fender Telecaster and Dan on fiddle along with Andy McLaughlin, Dave Pratt, Tony Martin and Steve Farrow. This Latin inspired rendition is a more acoustic version and features the wonderful Amanda Lewis on fiddle. Caitriona's reel is followed by The Pipefitters Jig, which also appears on 'The Twilight Shift' and is followed by 'The Niagara' which was written during Cuig's 2002 tour of USA & Canada. Convey's is named after my oldest friend (we started school together) and sometime hill walking and drinking companion, Brian Convey. 2. The Burnhope Bhangra/The Glass Fiddle Reels...well, sort of!! Indian/English The Burnhope Bhangra was inspired by the playing of Julian Sutton. Julian and I were members of the occasional band 'The North Country Dance Band' and this Bollywood arrangement was written to compliment a particularly fiery lamb curry. I take the lead on Fender Stratocaster, and former neighbour and Feast of Fiddles fiddler, Tom Leary originally from Burnhope, County Durham is to be found chipping in with atmospheric drones while the main fiddle melody is carried by Dan Hands. During the Rub I composed the Stone Fiddle as a 48 bar jig with Paul Archer. I rewrote the melodic theme, put it into 4/4 time, and gave it a new title hence The Glass Fiddle. 3. La Maison Jaune Musette Waltz. Anglo/French. A nod to James Hill's Hornpipe composition and Django Reinhardt's swing jazz in one set!! The tune title refers to a wonderful holiday spent with Donal, Kate and Maria at my cousin Eileen's house in Grimaud Village on the Golf de St Tropez, France. The melodic inspiration comes via the hornpipe 'The Factory Smoke' by James Hill. Fellow Rub and Steel String Band member, sometime co composer and maker of my bouzouki and Selmer Style jazz guitars, Paul Archer, joins me on fiddle. 4. Dr Cate Matthew's/Randy's Jig/O'Boyle's trip to Durham Jigs. Irish. The first jig is named for my daughter Cate. Whilst studying medicine at Sheffield University, the original title was to be 'The Anticipation Jig' but the album has been so long in the making I've renamed it after her professional title. Between 2000 and 2007 I had the pleasure of being principal banjo and mandolin tutor for the new Folk and Traditional Music Degree at Newcastle University. When my former student, Damian O'Kane, graduated in July 2005, he played a measured slow version of 'Dr. Cate Matthews' in his finale concert. It was a lovely setting so I have tried to follow suit. Randy's is named after Cuig-tour-organiser, mate and piano player extraordinaire, Randy Andropolis, Sean added the Hammond organ in his honour. Dan Hands joins me in Randy's and the final tune, O'Boyle's jig. This 48 bar jig is named for my sister in law, Carmel and her husband, Manus O'Boyle, after a recent visit from Ireland and a nostalgic trip to Durham Cathedral. 5. Aycliffe Richard's Waltz The first part of Aycliffe was written by Paul Archer and started life as a Schottische. Re-cycling the melody as a waltz and completing it with a fresh B part, I think I have ended up with a tune which would not be out of place at a Sicilian wedding...any remake of The Godfather, Paul and I are listening to offers. 6. The White House Mazurka/The Lerwick Reel/Sully's no6/Rocks in your Head Mazurka/Reels. Irish. Norman's tune is a little gem of melodic simplicity and leads into The Lerwick reel, which I wrote prior to playing Shetland Folk festival with THE RUB in 1989. Former All Ireland banjo champion, composer of many tunes in the traditional style and supplier of my Bohee tenor banjo, Tony Sullivan wrote the oft-played tune, the No 6. 'Rocks' was so named after a comment by one time RUB member, Bob Fox, who declared 'You must have rocks in your head', for composing this meandering Bb reel. Randy Andropolis accompanies the set on piano. I supplied chord suggestions and asked for a typical vamp piano style, which he thankfully supplied in spades. 7. The Gower Slip Jig/The Shannon Bumblebee Slip Jigs. Irish. The Gower was written after an enjoyable appearance by Cuig at Gower folk festival in 2001. The Shannon Bumblebee was written for Mary Shannon. I met Mary at a Sharon Shannon and the Woodchoppers gig in The Arc, Stockton on Tees with Norman Holmes, Geoff Hughes & Vin Garbutt. After the concert, which was epic, she was very complimentary about the original Champion String Band Album and admitted to borrowing a James Hill tune from it for a Bumblebees Album. I thought she could do with another, hence this Slip jig. 8. Slow Steel/The Steel Reel/The Shooting Star/The Gluepot Reels. Irish. The setting for these and many other compositions was originally aired at the long running Monday night session in the Colpitts Hotel, Durham. That session has now transferred to the Elm Tree a few hundred yards away. Slow Steel is a stately, melancholic version of The Steel Reel. Steel, is the name given to the rural town land around Whitley Chapel near Hexham. Whitley Chapel is also the site of the workshop and home to the maker of some of my finest instruments, Stefan Sobell. Paul Archer wrote the second reel, The Shooting Star, which many rate as his finest tune to date. Paul, an all round Renaissance man as well as being one of my oldest friends is a prodigious fiddler, guitarist, luthier, band co-member and occasional co-composer. The Gluepot Reel is written by friend, Rub and Cuig member also occasional co- composer, brilliant flute player and flute maker, Norman Holmes. I have slightly altered the A part from the original, for which I ask Norman's forgiveness. 9. Maria's Waltz Scots/American. Written for my wife, Maria. Apart from providing the original guide track and some accompaniment on guitar, I happily left the performing duties to Dan Hands and Champion String Band co-member Chuck Fleming on fiddles. Dan leads us into the waltz with the first phrase followed by Chuck, thereafter it's turn and turn about before they play in unison. Randy's piano playing is exactly what I requested with a very Shetland/Nashville take on a country waltz, and Sean completes the line up on bass. 10. O'Hanlon's Crooked Road Reel/Waltz. American Bluegrass. This tune is named for my sister in law Kate, and husband Donal O'Hanlon, my Irish playing partner of many years. Donal and I along with Maria and Kate toured America and played 'The Crooked Road' Appalachian bluegrass trail in the summer of 2007. This is my take on a reel with an old time/bluegrass feel, and the set concludes using the same melody in waltz time. I didn't own a bottle-neck, so Sean's tin whistle proved a useful substitute. 11. The Unresolved Reel/The Cunningham's of O'Hagan Drive Reels. Irish. The first reel I found difficult to give a natural ending, hence The Unresolved. I named the second reel for my sister Geraldine and her husband Pat & family who live in Toronto, Canada. I was fortunate to be able to persuade piano whiz and multi instrumentalist, Randy Andropolis to accompany during one of his visits from America to meet up with his daughter Christi, when she was a student on the Newcastle University Folk Music degree course. Amanda Lewis again joins me on fiddle. 12. The Toneneave/Colin Tom's/Julian's Jig Schottische/Horo/Jig. Scots/Hungarian/English. This is my attempt at a new genre for 21st century folk. Welcome to the Ethno Techno category. Toneneave or Tom & Dave as Bob Fox often announced it, was the name of the town land where my forbears lived and farmed in Magheracloone near Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan prior to emigration to England and America. The second tune was named for fiddler Tom Leary who has over the years chided and cajoled me into getting this album out. It has been written to compliment the double time accompaniment of the schottische and is meant to hav- Shop: odax

Dancing on the Water
AC Bushnell RELEASES CD/DVD ALBUM: CD - 'DANCING ON THE WATER' AND DVD: 'FOLLOWING THE ROAD: MUSIC AND LIFE LESSONS WITH AC BUSHNELL' Childhood & Family... AC Bushnell was born in Berkeley, California (contrary to reports that it was New York City). When he was four years old, he lived with his parents, Donna and Jack Bushnell, and sister, Kathlyn Bushnell in San Juan Atzingo, Mexico, a small village in the Mexican highlands. His father was a cultural anthropologist studying the indigenous people of this area. AC lived in Mexico for a year and a half, and in spite of hepatitis and dysentery, remembers his time in Mexico as extremely happy. AC learned Spanish and spoke some Matlazinca which was the local language of the indigenous people. He retained some Spanish but doesn't remember Matlazinca. When he visited the village in 1975 a woman he knew was absolutely devastated that he could no longer speak the language. After AC's Dad got his PhD from the University of California he had two job offers to teach anthropology: one from Vasser College in Poughkeepsie, New York (which he accepted) and one from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (which he did not). Ironically, AC ended up in Chapel Hill, NC later in life. Upstate New York was a huge change from the Bay Area of California. The first night his family arrived in Poughkeepsie they stayed overnight with two elderly German women who read he and his sister gothic German fairy tales. At the same time, there was a huge thunderstorm, all the power went out and lightening danced along the light fixtures. AC remembers thinking 'What is this place? What's happened to me?" He came to love upstate New York but it was an adjustment that took a while. AC took violin lessons with some regularity beginning at the age of 10. He and his family moved to New York City when he was 11 so his father could take a job with the State Commission Against Discrimination (later renamed more positively The State Commission for Human Rights) as Director of Research. New York City was another big change and a whole new world to explore. AC attended the High School of Music and Art in New York which he really liked. When he was 14 he first heard 'old time' American fiddle and banjo music and was entranced. His family had moved from the lower east side to Greenwich Village on the west side of New York City and from his apartment window he could look down on Allan Block's Sandal Shop. On Saturday afternoons they played music and Allan Block (later called 'the dean of north eastern fiddle players') gave him his first introduction to fiddle music. He used to listen every Saturday and eventually got up enough courage to take his violin over and try to play along - staying on the outside of the circle at first. And this was how he first learned how to play the fiddle. AC also met and played with Alan Block's daughter, Rory Block, who has since become a truly great blues singer and guitarist. Rory has recently earned the W.C. Handy Awards four years in a row - two for Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year, and two for Best Acoustic Blues Album of the Year. AC is happy that their friendship has lasted over the years. The 60s & New York City... It was then the decade of the 60s and AC was involved in the folk music revival as well as rock and roll and alternative music. During this time he absorbed a huge variety of music and saw many great performers at the Fillmore East and other locations. This was an amazing time to be in New York City and he met many fascinating people both famous and not so famous: musicians, artists, writers and politicians. It was a vibrant and turbulent time. At this time he played briefly with The Magic City Buckdancers and also met Richard Pertz and Bill Parsons who later would become the Cluckeneers. AC also met his great friend Frank Harjo in New York City - a Creek Indian who was born in Oklahoma. Frank's being and philosophy was a great influence on AC. Frank showed AC a different way to look at the world and that time wasn't actually linear but rather circular. Frank died in 1982. Happily AC is still friends with his wife, Suzan Shown Harjo (Creek and Cheyenne) who lives in Washington, D.C. and their son, Duke Ray Harjo who lives in Portland, Oregon. Frank always used to tell Duke that AC was his uncle and AC always felt honored by that. In the late 60s AC met Bland Simpson of the Red Clay Ramblers. Bland was in New York to record an album called "Simpson' for Columbia Records. AC used to play music with Bland, Bill Parsons and other musicians. Bland says 'I learned more Charlie Poole songs from these Yankees in New York than I ever learned in North Carolina!' The 60s were over and with it's passing went the great idealism and hope that were contained in that time. AC had graduated from Hunter College in the Bronx (now Lehman College) but felt at loose ends. Some things were good but he wasn't having much fun and he wasn't sure of this direction. He used to meet with Bland in the evenings and Bland kept talking about going back to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. One night AC said 'When you go back to North Carolina, would you take me with you?' Bland eventually agreed and in May of 1972 AC packed his modest possessions in Bland's truck and drove south. AC soon discovered that old time music in the south was even better than it had been up north. He got married to Mary Setter and had three sons, Brian, Chris and Tim and has lived in North Carolina ever since. Playing in bands and starting other things... After playing in the State Line String Band with Bill Parsons and Michael Kott (the flamboyant cello player who later played with The Plank Road String Band and Ace Weems and The Fat Meat Boys) AC didn't play publicly for about 12 years. In 1993, he began playing again individually and with other bands and his musical output has been increasing every year since then. During this time AC founded the Morning Star Foundation to assist Native Americans and make the public more aware of issues affecting them. Although AC is no longer active with the foundation, it's good works continue to this day as the Morning Star Institute based out of Washington, DC for support of Native Peoples' traditional rights and advocacy of their arts, with a special focus on Native American religious freedom and cultural property rights. The Institute also serves as a group sponsor of Native Children's Survival, devoted to the healing of Mother Earth, and sponsors legal action and public education to end use of Native Peoples' names and imagery in the sports world. In the 1990's AC also founded The Starlight Foundation to further spiritual progress on earth. Also at this time AC undertook a 2 year program at the New Seminary in New York and became an interfaith minister in 1997 and was ordained at the Cathedral of St. John in New York City. AC still performs weddings and other events when people ask him. During this period AC met his spiritual teacher Grace in Mt. Shasta, California. AC considers Grace a realized spiritual master who had an enormous positive influence in his life. In 1993 as AC took up the fiddle again he formed the Cluckeneers with Bill Parsons on guitar and Richard Pertz on banjo. They recorded two albums that are out of print and one live CD that is still available in limited supply called "The Hen Has Landed". On New Year's Day 2000, the dawn of the new millennium, the Stillhouse Bottom Band came into being. The members were AC, fiddle, Alan Julich, banjo and bass and Mark Weems, guitar. Bobb Head, banjo and bass, joined the band a few months later. There are three Stillhouse Bottom Band CDs in print. The band was named after Stillhouse Bottom, a natural area that AC's house overlooks in Chapel Hill, NC. In days gone by it was indeed used to make moonshine. Part of the Stillhouse Bottom area has been preserved in it's natural state forever by the NC Botanical Gardens. They are hoping to save an a- Shop: odax

Sunny Ridell He received the nickname 'Sunny' from his grandmother because of his bright and cheery disposition. He began his career as a ten-year-old singing on the street corners of Crystal Springs, Mississippi. Went to New Orleans age 16 or so to record at Whitecliff Records, the same label and studio as Little Richard and Fats Domino. Appeared regularly at Club 77 on Claiborne Street where he and Bobby Bland shared top billing. Did shows with Lee Dorsey, Ernie K-Doe, and Lou Rawls. Toured Europe with BB King and Carol Burnett. Sunny recorded 'Come out into my World' at Whitecliff, and sold ~350,000 copies of the single before the IRS chained the studio door shut. Later, he went to Darva records in Texas, where he recorded 'I'm Black and I know I'm Somebody'. After this song was banned from radio in Mississippi and other states, it was renamed 'Soul 100 Part 1 and Part 2'. Soul 100 was minor hit and eventually made it to nearly every jukebox in the Delta. In Texas worked with Ray Stevens, Charlie Daniels, and Willie Nelson. Sunny has appeared in 18 movies. His most notable parts were in 'Leadbelly', in which he played a convict, and 'Outlaw Blues', in which he played a Deputy Sheriff. Peter Fonda made Sunny repeat the leap so he could see, then made the comment, 'Give him a cape. That man can fly!' A cape was presented to Sunny during filming the next day.
