Chosen by Kaveh Akbar. * This is a rare collection from a Gazan poet published in English, and written during a moment of great crisis in that region. Abu Toha is one of the relatively few on-the-ground Palestinians whose accounts of daily life in Gaza aren't thwarted, censored, or cut off altogether. Most collections of Palestinian poetry currently on the market are authored by diasporic individuals, whereas Abu Toha lives and works in Gaza, and thus has lived experience of various armed conflicts. * As the conversation about the repeated military assaults on the Gaza Strip becomes more sympathetic to Palestinians' struggle against Israel's ongoing military occupation, poet Mosab Abu Toha's perspective becomes indispensable. * The book will include an appended interview, which will contextualize the poems and highlight key issues faced by Gaza residents. * Approximately 15 color photos will be included by the author, constituting a visual poem. Each photograph will be accompanied by one or two lines of verse. * Depending on the author's ability to travel, we are planning for the author in the U.S. at book launch. * In October 2021, Abu Toha delivered a talk and read his poetry for the University of Notre Dame's excellent Literatures of Annihilation, Exile & Resistance series. * Mosab Abu Toha has been recognized by prestigious American institutions: in 2019-2020, Toha was a Visiting Poet at Harvard University. From 2020-2021, Abu Toha held a Cultural Freedom Fellowship from the Lannan Foundation. * In October 2021, Mosab wrote an introduction for and edited a folio of contemporary Palestinian poets for the literary journal Peripheries, a journal published annual by the Harvard Divinity School's Center for the Study of World Religions. Mosab's poems also appeared in the folio. The issue also included poems by Kay Ryan, Kaveh Akbar, Rae Armantrout, Robin Coste Lewis, Bhanu Kapil, David Trinidad, and Fred Moten. * The author has received a Lannan Fellowship, and we will be working with the Lannan Foundation to promote the work. * Naomi Shihab Nye is eager to help make this book a success, and we will be reaching out to other diasporic Palestinian writers for not only endorsements, but for interviews, features, and other writing in support of this book. * Other fans of Mosab's writing include Mary Karr, author of The Liar's Club, Noam Chomsky, who supports the author's work on the Edward Said Library (and introduced him at an event at the University of Arizona in early 2020), and Rabih Alameddine, author of An Unnecessary Woman. * Abu Toha's essays have been published in The Nation and his poetry on the Poetry Foundation's web site, as well as author Rabih Alameddine's popular blog. An interview with Mosab appeared in Lit Hub in July 2020. * Librarians are familiar with the author due to his presence at the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting held in Philadelphia, January 2020. He took part in the International Responsibilities Task Force's (IRTF) sponsored discussion, ?Libraries in Gaza: Between Despair and Hope.? That same year, he also spoke at the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, and the University of Arizona. * The Markaz Review published a feature on Abu Toha for their Gaza issue in July 2021. They will also review the book when it's published in Spring 2022 and co-sponsor the launch event for the book.
