This is the incredible story of the world's greatest conqueror, a man who single handedly changed the course of history...and who was worshipped as a god. There have been many attempts in the 2,300 years since Alexander's death to tell the epic story of this enigmatic soldier. His deeds read like the stuff of legends. Of all the chroniclers of Alexander, and there have been many famous ones, including Plutarch and Ptolemy, none have given us a clearer and truer account than the one by Arrian. Writing 450 years after Alexander's death, Arrian had the advantage of hindsight and the unique ability to sift through important historical material which is now lost. He was able to judge the motives of many of the detractors of Alexander and to set the record straight in many instances. Alexander's aims have always been a topic of intense debate and this history will tell you what this brilliant tactician was trying to accomplish and why. From his first encounter with the Persians at the Battle of the Granicus to his last battle on the banks of the Indus River, thrill to the extraordinary exploits of Alexander the Great as he turns the ancient world upside down. After his passing, nothing would ever again be the same.... ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charlton Griffin. What’s the big idea? Former slave Epictetus argues that since we cannot control the external world, true freedom comes from the reasoned control of one’s own desires and passions. This is the core of stoic thought that Epictetus taught in Western Greece about 100 AD. Stoicism became the dominant moral philosophy of the Hellenistic and Roman world and Epictetus became its dominant and most respected teacher. Though Epictetus wrote nothing that has survived, writer Arrian attended his lectures and took those notes that preserved Epictetus’ teachings. Besides Arrian, Epictetus had another notable listener, the young Publius Aelius Hadrianus, who would go on to become Roman Emperor Hadrian, reigning from 117 AD to 138. Stoic philosophy echoed down the centuries, starting with St. Paul, whose “Acts” is shot through with Stoic thought. St. Ambrose and Tertullian show Stoic influence in their writings. In the modern world, stoicism remains important. Prussian emperor Frederick the Great, essayist Montaigne and even George Washington were inspired by the Stoics. Perhaps the most prominent modern writer influenced by the stoics is American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. His Man the Reformer and Self Reliance are almost modern stoic handbooks. Let’s go back a couple of thousand years to Nicopolis and listen to Epictetus explain Stoicism. We can cheat a bit and look over Arrian’s shoulder and read his lecture notes. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David L. Stanley. The Enchiridion or Handbook of Epictetus is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice compiled by Arrian, a 2nd-century disciple of the Greek philosopher Epictetus. Although the content is mostly derived from the Discourses of Epictetus, it is not a summary of the Discourses but rather a compilation of practical precepts. Eschewing metaphysics, Arrian focuses his attention on Epictetus's work applying philosophy to daily life. The book is thus a manual to show the way to achieve mental freedom and happiness in all circumstances. The Enchiridion appears to be a loosely-structured selection of maxims. In his 6th-century Commentary, Simplicius divided the text into four distinct sections suggesting a graded approach to philosophy: Chapters 1-21. What is up to us and not, and how to deal with external things: 1-2. What is up to us and not, and the consequences of choosing either. 3-14. How to deal with external things (reining the audience in from them). 15-21. How to use external things correctly and without disturbance. Chapters 22-28. Advice for intermediate students: 22-25. The problems faced by intermediate students. 26-28. Miscellania: the common conceptions, badness, and shame. Chapters 30-47. Technical advice for the discovery of appropriate actions (kath'konta): 30-33. Appropriate actions towards (a) other people, (b) God, (c) divination, (d) one's own self. 34-47. Miscellaneous precepts on justice (right actions). Chapters 48-53. Conclusions on the practice of precepts: 48. Final advice and his division of types of people. 49-52. The practice of precepts. 53. Quotations for memorization. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Robin Homer. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/169949/bk_acx0_169949_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

The Campaigns of Alexander, also titled The Anabasis of Alexander, is a history of Alexander the Great of Macedon, focusing on his conquest of the Persian Empire. Composed by Arrian of Nicomedia in the second century AD, the work comprises seven books providing a broadly chronological account of the reign and campaigns of Alexander with a particular focus on military matters. Book One begins with Alexander's accession to the Macedonian throne in 336 BCE, and Book Seven recounts the events of Alexander's final year and his death. The title Anabasis and the work's style and structure reflect Arrian's emulation of the Greek historian Xenophon’s Anabasis, a 370 BCE work on the campaign of Cyrus the Younger. ungekürzt. The Discourses of Epictetus is a series of informal lectures by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus, compiled by his pupil Arrian. The Stoic emphasis on endurance, self-restraint, and the power of the will to withstand calamity could often appear cold and inhuman. Epictetus, however, offers the most humane interpretation of Stoic ideals by using humor, imaginary conversations, and homely comparisons to put his message across. It is a practical philosophy that directs students to focus attention on their opinions, anxieties, passions, and desires. Epictetus contends that genuine education comes from discerning what is our own from that which does not belong to us and in correctly assenting or dissenting to external impressions. The Discourses have been influential throughout history and are quoted by Marcus Aurelius. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Winston. The Good Life Handbook is a rendering of Enchiridion in plain English. It is a concise summary of the teachings of Epictetus, as transcribed and later summarized by his student Flavius Arrian. The handbook is a guide to the good life. It answers the question, "How can we be good and live free and happy, no matter what else is happening around us?" Ancient Stoics lived in a time of turmoil under difficult conditions. So, the solutions they found to living free were tested under very stringent conditions. For example, the author of this handbook was a lame slave who made himself free and happy later in life by following the principles set out in this audiobook. Now The Stoic Gym offers The Good Life Handbook by Dr Chuck Chakrapani to interested listeners. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jeffrey Marr. Epictetus (c. 50-135 AD) was a Greek Stoic philosopher born at Hierapolis, Phrygia, who lived in Rome until his exile to Nicopolis in Greece, where he spent most of his life and died. His teachings were written down by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses. Epictetus taught that philosophy is a way of life, not just a theoretical discipline. The idea that we should only focus our efforts on what is inside our sphere of choice and that we ought to train ourselves to be indifferent to what is outside that sphere is repeated throughout his Discourses and these Fragments. To Epictetus, all external events are beyond our control, and we should calmly accept whatever happens. However, individuals are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through self-discipline. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John Winston.
