A History of the World in 6 Glasses , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 454min
Throughout human history, certain drinks have done much more than just quench thirst. As Tom Standage relates with authority and charm, six of them have had a surprisingly pervasive influence on the course of history, becoming the defining drink during a pivotal historical period. A History of the World in 6 Glasses tells the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the 21st century through the lens of beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola. Beer was first made in the Fertile Crescent and by 3000 B.C.E. was so important to Mesopotamia and Egypt that it was used to pay wages. In ancient Greece, wine became the main export of her vast seaborne trade, helping spread Greek culture abroad. Spirits such as brandy and rum fueled the Age of Exploration, fortifying seamen on long voyages and oiling the pernicious slave trade. Although coffee originated in the Arab world, it stoked revolutionary thought in Europe during the Age of Reason, when coffeehouses became centers of intellectual exchange. And hundreds of years after the Chinese began drinking tea, it became especially popular in Britain, with far-reaching effects on British foreign policy. Finally, though carbonated drinks were invented in 18th-century Europe, they became a 20th-century phenomenon, and Coca-Cola in particular is the leading symbol of globalization. For Tom Standage, each drink is a different kind of technology, a catalyst for advancing culture by which he demonstrates the intricate interplay of different civilizations. You may never look at your favorite beverage the same way again. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Runnette. Stone Guardian: Entwined Realms Series, Book 1 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 597min
Gryphons flying past skyscrapers? Wizards battling it out in coffeehouses? Women riding motorcycles with large swords strapped to their backs? All normal sights since the Great Collision happened twenty-six years ago. Well, not normal for everyone. Larissa Miller may have been born after the Great Collision, but as a history teacher who lives in the human-only city, she has never come into contact with any other race or species, nor has she wanted to. Her life is as ordinary as it gets - that is, until one day she walks out of her apartment and is attacked by a mob of Zombies, only to be saved by a Gargoyle. Gargoyles trust no one outside their Clan, but due to a cryptic prophecy, Terak, leader of the Gargoyles, has been watching over the human woman for months. While he can find no reason why the woman has been singled out, something about her stirs every protective instinct within him. When the attack confirms that the threats against her exist and are real, he convinces Larissa that though their races have never been allies, the best chance of discovering why she has been brought into his world is by working together. In the course of their investigation Terak becomes entranced by his little human. But when he discovers why Necromancers want her and the great reward that awaits him if he betrays her, he must choose between the welfare of his Clan and not only Larissa's life, but the fate of this New Realm as well. ungekürzt. Married to Laughter: A Love Story Featuring Anne Mora, Hörbuch, Digital, 343min
The current generation knows him as the serenity-seeking Frank Costanza from Seinfeld. An older generation knows him as one half of the comedy team Stiller and Meara. But as his memoir, Married to Laughter, reveals, Jerry Stiller has had a lifelong love affair with entertainment.Jerry Stiller discovered the power of comedy when, as a child, he saw Eddie Cantor transform an audience. Jerry's father often took him to vaudeville performances, where Jerry decided that he too wanted to make people laugh. After studying drama at Syracuse University, Jerry returned to New York to begin a life in the theater. Jerry soon met Anne Meara. At first they encouraged each other in their separate performances, but eventually they began doing a comedy act in the coffeehouses of New York's Greenwich Village. They created a brilliantly successful act with two characters who were exaggerated versions of themselves. Before long, they were regulars on The Ed Sullivan Show. Stiller and Meara was a smash hit.But Jerry's first love has always been the theater. He tells us about his nearly 50 years in show business - from summer stock to the early days of Joe Papp's pioneering Shakespeare in the Park, from his Broadway performance in Hurlyburly to his roles in such films as The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Seize the Day, and Hairspray. But most of all, he describes life with Anne, showing us his admiration for her as a performer and describing how she gave him the insight into acting that he'd long sought. Married to Laughter is a great love story about two people who found their place in show business without ever losing sight of each other. Language: English. Narrator: Jerry Stiller. Love, Janis (eBook, ePUB)
A revealing and intimate biography about Janis Joplin, the Queen of Classic Rock, written by her younger sister. Janis Joplin blazed across the sixties music scene, electrifying audiences with her staggering voice and the way she seemed to pour her very soul into her music. By the time her life and artistry were cut tragically short by a heroin overdose, Joplin had become the stuff of rock-and-roll legend. Through the eyes of her family and closest friends , we see Janis as a young girl, already rebelling against injustice, racism, and hypocrisy in society. We follow Janis as she discovers her amazing talents in the Beat hangouts of Venice and North Beach-singing in coffeehouses, shooting speed to enhance her creativity, challenging the norms of straight society. Janis truly came into her own in the fantastic, psychedelic, acid-soaked world of Haight-Asbury. At the height of her fame, Janis's life is a whirlwind of public adoration and hard living. Laura Joplin shows us not only the public Janice who could drink Jim Morrison under the table and bean him with a bottle of booze when he got fresh; she shows us the private Janis, struggling to perfect her art, searching for the balance between love and stardom, battling to overcome her alcohol addiction and heroin use in a world where substance abuse was nearly universal. At the heart of Love, Janis is an astonishing series of letters by Janis herself that have never been previously published. In them she conveys as no one else could the wild ride from awkward small-town teenager to rock-and-roll queen. The Last Bookaneer: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 770min
The best-selling author of The Dante Club takes us deep into a shadowy era in publishing ruled by a forgotten class of criminals. A golden age of publishing on the verge of collapse. For a hundred years, loose copyright laws and a hungry reading public created a unique opportunity: Books could be published without an author's permission with extraordinary ease. Authors gained fame but suffered financially - Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Robert Louis Stevenson, to name a few - but publishers reaped enormous profits while readers got their books on the cheap. The literary pirates who stalked the harbors, coffeehouses, and printer shops for the latest manuscript to steal were known as bookaneers. Yet on the eve of the twentieth century, a new international treaty is signed to protect authors and grind this literary underground to a sharp halt. The bookaneers, of course, would become extinct. In The Last Bookaneer, Matthew Pearl gives us a historical novel set inside the lost world of these doomed outlaws and the incredible heist that brought their era to a close. On the island of Samoa, a dying Robert Louis Stevenson labors over a new novel. The thought of one last book from the great author fires the imaginations of the bookaneers, and soon two adversaries - the gallant Pen Davenport and the monstrous Belial - set out for the south Pacific island. Pen Davenport - a tortured criminal genius haunted by his past - is reluctantly accompanied by Fergins, the narrator of our story, who has lived a quiet life of bookselling before being whisked across the world on his friend's final caper. Fergins soon discovers the supreme thrill of aiding Davenport in his quest: to steal Stevenson's manuscript and make a fortune before the new treaty ends the bookaneers' trade forever. Yet Samoa holds many secrets of its own, and the duo's bookish concerns clash with the island's violent destiny. A colonial war is afoot between the Bri ungekürzt. Language: English. Cold Pizza for Breakfast: A Mem-wha?? , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 850min
“Her biography, like her life, is a work of art.” So says singer/songwriter Janis Ian about Christine Lavin and her book Cold Pizza for Breakfast: A Mem-wha?? In this book, and now audiobook, Lavin recounts her circuitous, often hilarious route to becoming one of contemporary folk music’s most respected and beloved songwriters and performers. From Lincoln Center and other New York hot spots to theaters, music halls, and coffeehouses across North America and beyond, life on the road has defined Lavin’s life and music. If she lacked a master plan, she had the heart and chutzpah to keep moving and noting carefully what she saw of human nature along the way. It paid off. Her laser-sharp wit and perceptive irony produced a body of song, and now a book, that captures her life and touches our own (foibles included).Christine’s 14-hour audiobook also includes a foreword written and read by actor and singer-songwriter Jeff Daniels; two brand-new verses of the classic song “It Was a Very Good Year,” sung by its author, Ervin Drake; and a cappella bookmarks performed by The Accidentals. As Christine reads her lively tales, she occasionally picks up her guitar and sings to illustrate a point. Join her on this memorable and fun-filled journey and learn some of the most beloved talents in music, stage and screen. As Dirty Linen magazine puts it: “Christine Lavin is a storyteller par excellence. She can take the most trivial encounter and spin it into gold, exposing the heart of the matter with humor and grace.” About the author: Singer, songwriter, and entertainer Christine Lavin has released 20 solo albums and eight compilations. She has garnered eight ASCAP Awards and was the founder of the performing folk collective Four Bitchin’ Babes. Her songs are performed by artists including Sutton Foster and have been featured in Off Broadway and touring productions. She created and currently hosts “Slipped Discs” on XM/Sirius Radio’s The Village. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Christine Lavin. Rare Delights
Wayward Maggie is a quirky, fun, hard-to-categorize duo, whose members are Jess Hawk Oakenstar and Kate DeLaPointe. Their musical presentation/persona comes to rest somewhere between mournfully dark and rockingly/rollickingly comedic, meaning their audiences always enjoy an entertainment roller coaster ride. They come from very different backgrounds. Jess, born and raised in Zimbabwe, is a widely traveled solo guitarist/singer/songwriter and 'one-woman band' who arrived in the US in 1990 after living in South Africa, Great Britain and New Zealand. Being an adventurer, she worked her passage to the US aboard a German container ship, and from then until late 1996 she toured constantly, both nationally (36 states across the US) and internationally (in Australia and New Zealand). She has received much critical acclaim for her two albums, Leave a Little Light Behind and Your Heart Will Show You, both of which were produced by Jeff Dayton, band leader for Glen Campbell, and she still performs regularly as a solo act. Kate comes from a family of career musicians. Mom is Judy Henske, beloved blues and folk cult figure of the sixties who still records today. Stepdad is Craig Doerge, a founding member of jazz fusion band (and James Taylor's sometime backup band) The Section, and keyboard player for (and co-writer with) Jackson Browne, Crosby, Stills and Nash and many others. Her biological father is Jerry Yester, producer, writer, arranger and most famously a member of the Lovin' Spoonful since '67. There are others too, going way back, but let's get to Kate! She has played piano since the age of eight, guitar since age thirteen, and written songs since age seventeen. She appeared on Graham Nash's album Innocent Eyes in the eighties and appeared with him on the TV show Solid Gold the same year the album came out. During the nineties she performed regularly in Seattle coffeehouses and pubs, and appeared on Souls of the Sound, an acoustic album featuring Northwestern female singer-songwriters. Despite their different backgrounds, Jess and Kate share a love of much of the same types of material, along with a similar sense of humor. However, most importantly, their voices harmonize exquisitely. The closeness of this blend is what their audiences comment on most. 'Rare Delights' is their first CD as a duo, and they hope to produce many more!- Shop: odax
