Plagued by the memory of his abusive father, apprehensive about his own impending parenthood, Earl is a decorated ex-Marine of absolute integrity—and overwhelming melancholy. Now he's about to face his biggest, bloodiest challenge yet. It is the summer of 1946, organized crime's garish golden age, when American justice seems to have gone to seed for good. Nowhere is this truer than in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the reigning capital of corruption. When the district attorney vows to bring down the mob, Earl is recruited to run the show. As casino raids erupt into nerve-shattering combat amid screaming prostitutes and fleeing johns, the body count mounts—along with the suspense in this "riveting" (Los Angeles Times), "richly told tale" (The San Francisco Examiner).

The Oakland A's of the early 1970s were the most transformative team in baseball history. Never before had an entire organization so collectively traumatized baseball's establishment with its outlandish behavior and business decisions - or with its indisputable winning record: five straight division titles and three straight championships. The high drama that played out on the field was exceeded only by the drama in the clubhouse and front office. But those A's, with their garish uniforms and outlandish facial hair, redefined soon virtually every aspect of the game for coming generations. Under the visionary leadership of Charles O. Finley, the team assembled such luminary figures as Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, and Vida Blue. Finley acted as his own general manager and, with an insatiable need for control, dictated everything from the playlist of the ballpark organist to the menu for the media lounge. The advent of free agency spelled the end of Finley's reign; within two years his dynasty was lost. A sprawling, brawling history of one of the game's most unforgettable teams, Dynastic, Bombastic, Fantastic is a paean to a turbulent yet magical time. ungekürzt. Language: English. Penguin Classics presents Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure, adapted for audio and available as a digital download as part of the Penguin English Library series. Read by Samuel West. As you got older...you were seized with a sort of shuddering, he perceived. All around you there seemed to be something glaring, garish, rattling, and the noises and glares hit upon the little cell called your life, and shook it, and scorched it. If he could only prevent himself growing up! He did not want to be a man. Jude Fawley, the stonemason excluded not by his wits but by poverty from the world of Christminster privilege, finds fulfilment in his relationship with Sue Bridehead. Both have left earlier marriages. Ironically, when tragedy tests their union it is Sue, the modern emancipated woman, who proves unequal to the challenge. Hardy’s fearless exploration of sexual and social relationships and his prophetic critique of marriage scandalised the late Victorian establishment and marked the end of his career as a novelist. Part of a series of vintage recordings taken from the Penguin Archives. Affordable, collectable, quality productions - perfect for on-the-go listening. Language: English. Narrator: Samuel West. There might be no such thing as werewolves, vampires, or ghosts, but apparently evil dickhead Klowns are real.Tempest Michaels is once again investigating ridiculous cases that are clearly not even slightly paranormal in nature, but his daily menu of fun is interrupted by a plague of men dressed in garish outfits with twisted clown makeup as they terrorize the Kent towns and villages with ever-escalating and more-frequent attacks. If they were not enough of a nuisance, he has foolishly employed a woman with whom he is utterly in love. Trying to ignore Mr. Wriggly’s thoughts about what to do with his new colleague, he goes after his silver medal, a girl he lusted after years ago at school. But while Mr. Wriggly might not care tuppence about the difference, is Tempest’s heart really in it?The Klowns should be a case for the police to solve, but their leader appears to have a serious beef with Tempest, and they are coming for him and anyone who gets between them. Who are the Klowns? What do they want? And what's with the ridiculous smiles?Throw in a demonic possession, a restaurant with ghostly footsteps, and some more meddling by his mother, and it looks like another entertaining week for Kent’s best paranormal investigator. ungekürzt. From ancient Egypt to present-day New Orleans, a woman of exceptional strength is called to protect against an unspeakable evil...and to experience an unforgettable seduction. Khepri still isn’t used to being The God’s Wife. The daughter of a common farmer, she’s more comfortable being friends with servants than employing a whole team of them. Lately she’s had doubts about the role she’s been thrust into. She’s had yearnings for another sort of life, one where she’s loved intimately, rather than only adored from afar. When a powerful man lures her away from her temple, she’s thrilled at the chance for an adventure. Her adventure quickly becomes a nightmare when the handsome vizier mummifies her alive, until she awakens in a distant future. Alone and needing a guide in this strange and garish new world, she turns to the troubled man who set her free... When New Orleans police detective Justin Henry Boucher is called to the Garden Museum to investigate stolen Egyptian artifacts, it’s not exactly the adrenaline rush he used to get working a homicide. But with a reprimand on his record and a sorrow he can’t shake, he will take what he can get - as long as he can keep his badge. What he doesn’t count on is having to keep his cool when he finds one of the priceless artifacts - a golden-skinned goddess wrapped in fabric like a mummy, left to die and needing his help. She’s a mystery he’s determined to unravel. She might also be the cure for his lonely heart. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Phil Gigante, Natalie Ross. "How's it going, George?""Sheer murder."When Ludovic Travers went to Sandbeach-"the Blackpool of the South Coast"-his purpose was to investigate on behalf of an insurance company a jewel robbery at one of that lively resort's leading hotels. The victim of the robbery was Mona Dovell, the flighty wife of an elderly and highly respected magistrate. Ludovic was not long on the job before he discovered that Mona was heavily involved with a bookmaker of dubious reputation, and that her relations with certain members of the local C.I.D. were unconventional to say the least of it. After that, even the robbery itself began to smell fishy, and Ludovic started to wonder if there was not also a strong whiff of corruption in the air.The Case of the Careless Thief was originally published in 1959. This new edition features an introduction by crime fiction historian Curtis Evans."One can only wonder how he keeps up the standard . . . as ingenious and full of meat as ever." Guardian"In crime writing it's not true that a good wine needs no Bush. The Case of the Careless Thief is another dry sherry by Christopher Bush, one of the best story-tellers in the world.' Western Mail¿'Ingenious and energetic double-murder set in a garish south coast resort. Ludovic Travers, a polished private eye, investigates a jewel-theft insurance-swindle and uncovers the nastiest bunch of seaside characters since Graham Greene visited Brighton.' A dazzling, stylish biography of a fabled Parisian photographer, adventurer, and pioneer. A recent French biography begins, "Who doesn't know Nadar?" In France, that's a rhetorical question. Of all of the legendary figures who thrived in mid-19th-century Paris - a cohort that includes Victor Hugo, Baudelaire, Gustave Courbet, and Alexandre Dumas - Nadar was perhaps the most innovative, the most restless, the most modern. The first great portrait photographer, a pioneering balloonist, the first person to take an aerial photograph, and the prime mover behind the first airmail service, Nadar was one of the original celebrity artist-entrepreneurs. A kind of 19th-century Andy Warhol, he knew everyone worth knowing and photographed them all, conferring on posterity psychologically compelling portraits of Manet, Sarah Bernhardt, Delacroix, Daumier, and countless others - a priceless panorama of Parisian celebrity. Born Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, he adopted the pseudonym Nadar as a young bohemian, when he was a budding writer and cartoonist. Later he affixed the name Nadar to the façade of his opulent photographic studio in giant script, the illuminated letters 10 feet tall, the whole sign 50 feet long, a garish red beacon on the boulevard. Nadar became known to all of Europe and even across the Atlantic when he launched "The Giant", a gas balloon the size of a 12-story building, the largest of its time. With his daring exploits aboard his humongous balloon (including a catastrophic crash that made headlines around the world), he gave his friend Jules Verne the model for one of his most dynamic heroes. The Great Nadar is a brilliant biography of a larger-than-life figure, a visionary whose outsized talent and canny self-promotion put him way ahead of his time. ungekürzt. Language: English. The majority of those fortunate enough to feast their eyes upon the majestic complex that is the Alcázar of Seville share the same sentiment: its beauty is indescribable. This is a place that oozes opulence, a kind of opulence flavored by class and historical charm, rather than the garish flamboyance and tawdry ostentation often displayed by the nouveau riche. To say that the Alcázar is fit for the fussiest prince would simply be downplaying its splendor. Of course, this was exactly what the Alcázar was, and continues to be, for this fantastical compound is the oldest European royal residence still in use. The royal estate, with 17,000-square meters of spectacular structures and 7 hectares of lavish gardens, is even more sublime in the nighttime. The rambling Moorish arches and the gorgeous detail of the fairy-tale turrets and curtain walls - from the striking shapes of the rectangular merlons capped with triangular cones to the coarse, aged texture and smears of damp discoloring the ancient facade - are all the more emphasized by the torches dotted throughout the premises. But following the departure of the nocturnal visitors, the interactive tour guides (clad in elaborate costumes of historical figures just hours before), and the last of the staff, the Alcázar, some say, becomes an intoxicating, sinister maze almost impossible to escape. The Alcázar of Seville: The History of Spain’s Most Famous Royal Palace journeys through the eventful timeline of the palatial fortress as well as the stages leading up to its fruition. It also explores some of the fascinating characters who lived there, and the most pivotal events that took place within the centuries-old brick walls.  ungekürzt. Language: English.
