John Taylor Gatto's Weapons of Mass Instruction focuses on mechanisms of traditional education which cripple imagination, discourage critical thinking, and create a false view of learning as a byproduct of rote-memorization drills. Gatto's earlier book, Dumbing Us Down, introduced the now-famous expression of the title into the common vernacular. Weapons of Mass Instruction adds another chilling metaphor to the brief against conventional schooling. Gatto demonstrates that the harm school inflicts is rational and deliberate. The real function of pedagogy, he argues, is to render the common population manageable. To that end, young people must be conditioned to rely upon experts, to remain divided from natural alliances and to accept disconnections from their own lived experiences. They must at all costs be discouraged from developing self-reliance and independence. Escaping this trap requires a strategy Gatto calls "open source learning" which imposes no artificial divisions between learning and life. Through this alternative approach our children can avoid being indoctrinated-only then can they achieve self-knowledge, good judgment, and courage. ungekürzt. Language: English. Climate Change, air pollution, and energy security are three key policy issues in China's energy sector. To address the aforementioned challenges, JianJun Tu applied CIMS, a technologically explicit and behaviourally realistic model to the most populous country. His research findings show that there are plausible energy development paths that would enable China to continue economic development while ensuring security of energy supply and acceptable local and global environmental quality. Advanced technologies have been identified as the key drivers to achieve ambitious emissions control and energy security targets. In addition, This book reveals that while a carbon tax can effectively reduce both carbon and sulphur emissions, a sulphur tax is a policy instrument more specifically targeting local air quality issues. Furthermore, it is essential to understand the inevitable tradeoff between different policy goals and their associated costs. While a best case energy development path can be formulated to alleviate all three policy challenges, this path will be inevitably associated with substantial costs, which imposes a challenge for China's energy policy makers in the years to come.

Periodisation is an ever-present feature of the grammar of history-writing. As with all grammatical rules, the order it imposes can both liberate and stifle. Though few historians would consider their period boundaries as anything more than useful guidelines, heuristic artifice all too easily congeals into immovable structure, blinkering the historical gaze. Researchers of literature are, of course, challenged by similar dilemmas. Here, too, the neatness of periodisation can obscure the cultural output of awkward individuals that do not fit the right chronological corset, whilst also creating unfounded expectations of shared experience and expression.Rather than discard periodisation altogether, in this cross-disciplinary volume an international group of historians and literary scholars presents different ways in which accepted period boundaries in modern European history can be challenged and rethought. To do so, they explore unnoticed continuities, and instances of delayed cultural transfer that defy easy periodisation; adopt the perspective of social groups that standard periodisation schemes have ignored; and consider how historical actors themselves divide up history and how this can affect their actions.

The main evidence supporting the theory of an expanding universe is the red-shift of distant galaxies (the increased wavelength of electromagnetic radiation from these galaxies), which is attributed to the Doppler effect. Assuming an expanding universe, the fulfillment of the cosmological principle (the lack of a specific center of the "world" - that is, each place is the same) requires the adoption of an infinite universe. An infinite universe can hardly expand, since it is difficult to be ever more infinite. Therefore, the model of a three-dimensional spherical universe - in four-dimensional space - must remain. This assumption automatically imposes a curvature of space - the surface of a sphere has non-zero curvature. This is contrary to the commonly assumed Euclidean geometry, and requires a different view on the mechanisms of light propagation. The laws of electrodynamics in non-Euclidean space would also act differently. The following work attempts to explain the observed phenomenon of the red-shift of distant galaxies by adopting the following hypothesis: the speed of electromagnetic waves decreases with distance travelled, due to the curvature of space.

To those who have been forsaken, hell has no geography. The Black Angel begins with the disappearance of a young prostitute from one of New York City's seamiest neighborhoods. Like so many tormented souls before her, the girl's mother is inevitably drawn to Charlie Parker's doorstep desperate for redemption and revenge. Despite the danger that his chosen profession imposes on his wife and newborn daughter, Parker knows that the woman and her troubles cannot be ignored. As always, he is driven as much by the evil that simmers in the hidden honeycomb world as he is by the ties of friendship and blood. As Parker gets closer to the girl's captors, he discovers that her disappearance is linked to a church of bones in Eastern Europe, to the slaughter at a French monastery in 1944, and to the myth of an object known as the Black Angel - an object considered by evil men to be beyond priceless. But the Black Angel is not a legend. It is real. It lives. It dreams. And the mystery of its existence may contain the secret of Parker's own origins. ungekürzt. Language: English. Have you heard of kratom? If you have, you probably already know about its healing properties and medicinal value. It has been found to be beneficial for people who are suffering from pain, substance abuse, depression, and so on. Why is the DEA so keen on making it illegal in the United States? Rising author Christopher Knowles sheds light on the matter in his latest book, The Kratom Alternative. The growing investigation into the usefulness and side effects of kratom has led people to believe that it is harmful. However, the author proves otherwise by giving you the opportunity to look at the matter from a different perspective. Regardless of how beneficial kratom is or how much its side effects pale in comparison with those of other popular drugs, if the government imposes a ban on kratom products, you will be unable to obtain them legally. That is why the author has provided a list of alternatives that you can use if kratom is off the market. If you want to live a healthier life by opting for herbal and organic medicines, these alternatives will surely pave the path. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Eric Martin Reid.
